I've always wanted to pursue medicine but my self-doubt has driven me to pursue something else in university. After basically completing my first year, I've realized that I shouldn't pursue something that will leave me asking "what if" my whole life so luckily my current program is in health science so I've rerouted my path to, one day, become an OB/GYN and I owe it all to this channel! Thank you for all the information, tips, and tricks you are providing Dr. Jubbal!

Almost universally the tips 1) evidence based learning and 4) pursuit of efficiency takes place in todays med school classes nowadays. Out of 180 students in my class I would say that well over 80% use Anki and outside resources with under 20 students attending live lectures. The use of outside resources like boards and beyond, pathoma, and sketchy is well above 50% of our class. These resources save the time of watching lectures, while already having Anki cards made that will directly help you with the test you're studying for and STEP. While this is great and most all students are studying as efficiently and effectively as possible, this creates a hypercompetitive space even within a class that is pass/fail (aside from being ranked into tertials). Med students have picked these habits up to the nth degree in the past 2 years, and if you aren't using it you are almost looked down upon like a caveman. My advice to incoming med students and anyone applying is to learn these habits and learn them quickly, because if you don't your peers are.

Most medical students with 2 herniated discs in their neck, carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands, painful meshes in their abdomen holding back congenital hernias, and bicipital tendonitis, a lonely, secretly religious life style (I shouldn't have kept it a secret), often facing racism because they are an immigrant in the southeastern US, a vicious and aggressive/dependent family, and an awakening childhood history of abuse have a bit of a harder time being stellar, but still some of them are superman. I should have been superman anyways. I should have been superman.

Having just retired as a physician, I tell you that if you have an 8 foot ditch to jump over (metaphor for MS), you don’t have to jump 10 feet. You don’t need to be a gunner to get to be called ‘Doctor’. Have a life during training, or you’ll look back sadly at missing 10 years of your life, that you will never get back. If you don’t believe me, wait 30 years and remember what I just said.
