This was one of the first one-on-one interviews Sadia and I conducted whilst in Palestine. We met Ahmed our very first day in Nablus and he quickly became a dear friend. Ahmed was the person I called if I had any questions on anything related to the West Bank, he was the person Sadia and I spent the most time with while in Nablus. He would accompany us any time we wanted to venture off and explore. And even though he was younger than us, he felt the need to keep us safe, as well. There were no days spent with Ahmed that he didn't make us laugh from our belly. We decided to interview Ahmed because we saw how involved he was in the community, always working multiple jobs, volunteering with different associations, and always available to give a helping hand to locals in the old city. I often found myself amazed at how kind Ahmed was to everyone despite the circumstances he was born into. I also thought about how the portrayal of young Arab men in the media is often radical and violent, completely the opposite of Ahmed and so many other young Palestinian men we met. It was important to both Sadia & I to capture someone like Ahmed, to show the complexities of life living under occupation.
