I grew up in southern Alberta with the pleasure of being around both rattlesnakes and bullsnakes. In the wild area behind my house there was a rattlesnake hibernaculum that my mom protected diligently against the roving teens that tended to pour boiling water or gasoline down the hole. But we also had a resident bullsnake that stuck around for a couple years. It lived under our front steps and came out in the morning to sun itself on our pavement. Me and my brother loved it and named it Sammy (gender neutral name cause we werent sure if it was a boy or a girl). Never handled it or anything, but we loved watching it. The mail carriers weren't the most pleased finding a 6 foot snake blocking his path to delivering our mail though! 😂

A person sees a snake that goes: "Hiss, hiss, [tail shake, tail shake], [rattle, rattle, rattle] -- yeah, I'm a dangerous rattlesnake; you'd better run!" Person looks closer: "Oh, that's a lot of bull, snake!" -- Is that how they got their name?

I live in Southern Ontario, Canada and I've noticed Stouts in my yard and I'm very happy to have them for neighbors, not just because they are adorable but also because they prey on mice (keeps them out of my house) and frogs (keeps them out of my pool). It's good to understand your wildlife neighbors so you know which ones to respect and leave alone and which ones you actually need to get evicted.

Name suggestion - Diamond, given the similarity of her pattern. I used to have a garter snake I called slither. She loved fish, so I stocked her water bowl with feeder fish. I tried feeding her a cricket once, but had to take it out because slither didn't want to eat it, and the cricked started eating the snake. We would spend afternoons hanging out in the afternoon sunlight with her on my belly. I had to take her back to the pet store because I had to move, and the place I was moving to did not allow snakes. I hope she got adopted by a good caretaker. At the pet store, when they took slither out of the container, their comment was "Oh look, she's not even afraid!" I guess I was doing something right, because she had not been handled much before I got her. Where I grew up, we had a lot of garter snakes and milk snakes. Milk snakes look like rattle snakes in their markings, but are harmless. There was one time my mom met me at the door to the house, and asked me to take the snake next to my brother's crib outside. I looked at the snake, looked at my mom and said "Okay." Picked up the snake and released it in our garden. I did not find out until years later that she thought I had put the snake there. I told her, no I had not put the snake there, it crawled up from the basement. She told me if she had known that, she would never have asked me to remove it (dead snake if she had known). Milk snakes are generally calm as long as you don't stress them out and can be handled easily if you are gentle with them. Do make sure of your identification, milk snakes look a lot like rattle snakes, but without the fat head and no rattles. If they are in dead leaves, the will vibrate their tail in the leaves to mimic the sound of a rattle snake to try and scare you away.

Treated it like one and used a long stick to put it in a barrel. (I know, stupid. but we had chickens and i wasint gona let it hurt any) Then one of the farm hands id it. So releaved. And thats how I learned bull snakes exist. lol Neat snakes. I wanted to keep that one but my folks said no. u_u For a bull snake, I remember it was actually really chill and dididnt even strike once.

Great video! I keep and breed bullsnakes and some other pituophis species. To me the one you have there looks like a gopher snake, maybe a San Diego gopher snake (which could explain her California origins) or Great Basin due to her patterning and her head looking more like a true gopher snake than a bull. But bullsnakes are technically a subspecies of gophersnakes, so it isn't really wrong either way. She's beautiful!

Would you happen to have any general suggestions for educational resources - or I should say, TYPES of resources - for finding out more about local snake species? I don't know if we even have bull snakes my part of the Southeastern US, but I know we have rattlesnakes (two species, no less), water moccasins, and some of the more common non-venomous sorts like racers. There are also quite a few sorts of "king snake" which appears to be a general term for any non-venomous snake that eats other snakes...? But when I just try a general search I get all sorts of conflicting information, and absolutely nothing useful in terms of "how do I make sure an area is safe for the snake AND me" type questions. Identification isn't so much my issue: if it's a snake of any sort, I'm not touching it! But things like...oh, for instance, back in west Texas it was just a known thing, you didn't leave piles of ANYTHING in your yard, not rocks or bricks or wood or even milk crates, because the Western Diamondback really, really likes dark places to hide, den up, and generally hang out. So if you didn't have any good snake hang-outs in your yard, you were good to go. But here it's a different story. It's like people don't talk about sensible precautions. The only stories I hear from family members have to do with shooting the poor snakes! It's frustrating.
