Evidently the health and safety office in Gotham is as corrupt as the police force. Kathy did reappear in three panels in 1998 mini series the Kingdom, in which dimensions and timelines collide, and Batman sees her for two panels, then says 'Kathy?', and has no idea why he said it. Darkwing Duck had a similar concept in a couple episodes. They went to a planet where everyone was a superhero, except for one guy. Their culture ended up being completely based around following this one guy around with their “secret identities” and saving him from all of the minor difficulties he had to deal with every day. It, of course, drove him insane and he became a potentially world-ending supervillain.

Love this. Kathy Kane - Star Trap Musical Artist lives in my head, rent free. Hardly anyone talks about Kathy nowadays and I adore her and Betty. I love how Kathy and Betty were introduced to stop people from thinking Bruce and Dick were gay, but both men almost always avoided the eager superheroines' advances, saying stuff like "I'm married to Lady Justice" and "I have no time, for my crime fighting comes first and you'd be in danger". Plus, Robin is constantly jealous of Kathy taking all Bruce's attention away from him and seems to see her as a threat to their dynamic. His nightmare/fever dream of them marrying and Kathy "ruining everything!" only confirms it. It all just makes them look gayer. Despite the constraints of her 50's girl gadgets and the sexism of the period, I'm a huge Kathy fan, as much as I love Kate. Glamorous circus stunt rider with fierce 50's hairstyle for the win. 🙂🦇

When I started reading comics in the mid to late seventies, she only appeared occasionally, like when she guested in Freedom Fighters, but then around 1980 when she was murdered by the League of Assassins, it was a powerful story. That storyline with Batman stopping the League is still a favorite of mine. Even though her role was minor (as a catalyst victim early on), I say it's still the best story any version of the character has ever been in.

I saw an animated Batman movie about Batwoman. The premise was that 3 different women were Batwoman who worked together in the same disguise. I loved that concept because it allowed for more interesting moments where Batman wonders who she really is if she doesn't recognize him from one night ago. I wish they would continue with that concept, allowing Bette to take that role with Kate and or Kathy Kane like a mashed up mutli-universe surprise reveal.

@@RollingDodge Me Too. In fact, I even have several ideas about how she could stand out as her own superhero without being tied directly to Batman. A few of them are: "Unlike Batman who is actually the well-known Bruce Wayne, nobody really knows who Batwoman is. This gives her an advantage to sneaking into enemy parties, businesses, and etc. since she's a complete nobody. She's so unknown and so committed to her love of being a Bat-themed vigilante inspired by Batman that, like Watchmen's Rorschach, she's completely become her hero identity and lives alone in a large gothic house in an empty, abandoned neighbourhood called "The Bat House" which is filled to the brim with Bat-themed items, indicating her obsession and dedication.

Thank you once again for doing the deep dive into all things comics. I was sure this character was made up in the Batman: Bad Blood animated movie. It is very fascinating to see how subtle changes in a character can give it substantial marketing boost. There would be no Batgirl if there was not some appeal for the Batwoman. But because the suits didn't want to give equal footing to a Bat-Woman with their Bat-Man, they brought in the Bat-Girl so that she would be more of a sidekick (I'm guessing at these motivations, but that seems to be the case). This current iteration of Batwoman is not bad. I have an almost secret love for the CW format of DC comic book TV shows; they are all really bad soap operas that are hilarious when you binge watch them. But it seems like it would have been better to stick with the original back story. It would be less complicated and definitely different from any other DC universe hero.

I find that when people write things like Seduction of the Innocent, or when they attack people on the Internet with accusations like that, they are more often than not speaking about themselves and projecting onto others (even my statement could be that... I don't know). But when accusations are used to stifle conversation and stop creativity, the one tossing those accusations needs to look in a mirror and think on if they really meant it was they who fit their conclusions.

They actually killed her off about 5 issues before I started reading comics on a regular basis so It wasn't until they reprinted some of the stories she was in that I knew more about her than she was dead. I will say that I agree that there was some potential for growth there, although with the introduction of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl they would have had to figure out something to do with Betty. I dob;t remember what issue it was but there was an issue where they had the Earth-1 Batman work with the Earth-2 Batwoman the only thing I really remember about that story was how unsettling each of them found it to be working with the doppelganger of the one they knew that was dead. Over all, though, I can see why she had such a fan following. As an aside if you wanted to do series on short lived female characters modeled after male heroes there was a character called Arrowette, who appeared in a Green Arrow story and who, like Batwoman had her weapons designed out of female items (like a needle and thread arrow or a kerchief arrow, and I think she even had a hairpin arrow, but don't hold me to that it has been a few years since I read the story). Also like Batwoman, at the end of the story, Green Arrow convinced her that crime fighting was too dangerous and she gave it up, again a bit too easily for someone that had modeled herself on a hero and spend all the time training to develop the skills needed to emulate him...but those were stories of the Silver Age and...well...you know...Even the long standing female characters weren't taken as seriously as they could have been. I mean how many times in Justice Society or Justice League stories was Wonder Woman taken prisoner or in some way in need of saving? She was great in the own title but put her in a team book and all of a sudden she's the damsel in distress...

She was an interesting idea for an alternative and more healthy love interest than Catwoman is. Also something about the notion of Batman fighting alongside a woman who he worries for the safety in today's modern world of comics would be kind of grounding for him. He and all his super allies can be a little too godlike sometimes, so having a mortal who keeps throwing herself in the line of fire with him and it make Bruce uncomfortable and have to try and play things safer than he would normally could be good for him. Plus imagine if instead of Bruce protesting her being a vigilante it wasn't because shes a woman, but instead because shes just missing that "spark" you need to do this gig. Like every hero has an origin that forged them in fire, but shes just a former circus lady who got some money and figured this would be a fun way to hook up with Batman. She doesn't have a father in jail she's trying to prove innocent, she doesn't have parents who were shot in front of her. Shes just a eccentric, talented and slightly privileged thrill seeker who might be motivated by a little hero worship to.
