There is an 180 minute run-time on this, a test of patience for the average movie-goer back in the late 90s, when the only memorable parallel was Titanic! While this certainly didn't have the cinematic grandeur and legacy of that James Cameron outing, Martin Brest certainly overdid himself with Joe Black. Of the 3 hours, these were possibly the best 2 minutes of the entire film. Brad Pitt was certainly the star of the 90s. But Claire Forlani was certainly overlooked at her peak. I wish she had gotten more movies, as well as an Oscar, to add to her standing. She could have easily run with the best of her era.

A truly miraculous performance by Claire Forlani! I loved two aspects of this scene in particular: 1) The contrast in the eyes - hers gradually being filled with absolute terror and his filled with calm compassion and ancient knowledge, and 2) How the name "Joe" is used throughout the movie as a protection device for the person saying it - Bill uses it ("This is Joe") to protect himself at the Board Meeting when Drew asks, "Who is the man standing to your left?"; Joe uses it ("I'm Joe") to protect himself when Susan asks, "So tell me Joe... How come a man as attractive, intelligent, well-spoken... diffident in the most seductive way, and yet... powerful... is all alone in this world?", and Susan uses it ("You're Joe") in this scene to protect herself from needing to say out loud the horrifying truth of who Joe really is.

"You're Joe", is simply an acceptance of death. When it is in your face, when you see it approaching from a distance, when you dream of it, when it comes to find you. You are you, in the same vein. Once you accept that fact, life gains new meaning. Like the rays of the sun going on for eons, we mistakenly think they disappear at night... You are you, in dusk, and in light. Accept yourself, and you'll be alright.

She knew, but instead of recoiling in horror preserved on the surface the fragile fiction of "Joe" to be kind. She deliberately let him down easy and with grace because she still cared. He reciprocated and accepted this with bittersweet love and grace. They were both kind to one another. A beautiful scene.
@sonofizzy4 жыл бұрын
@Alex M If you watch her expression again throughout the scene, it is clear that she knew, especially with him gazing at her which was a sign throughout the movie that he was conveying something. And her wan little smile was perfect for what she knew could never be, but letting him down easy by preserving what they both now knew was a polite fiction between them. The contrived explanation that you offer is not borne out by the expressions of the characters, what they say, and the music. Her conscious mind knew, starting with the expressed realization that he was someone else and saying that scared her to find out who. When Joe says it doesn't matter what I am, but that she knows who he is; listen to the the music right after that while he is looking at her and she is looking at him, and watch her expressions as she comes to a decision. It's all there if you pay attention. Ah, yes, and Joe had a bittersweet smile because he know that what he wanted could now never be, but still cared. The mutual caring shown at the end of the scene is beautiful.

Not relief. She knew, but in that realization also knew that she could never be the bride of Death - she was too full of life. And upon that realization, she was kind to Death, saying that she knew he was - Joe - putting him back in his place as a close, loved one, but not a beloved. With similar grace, Death accepted that she could not bring herself to love him as he loved her, but would always be there for her. Truly, Death was truly noble in this scene as extended a bit after the clip. Beautiful.

David 1755 --- Such a powerful scene: we watch Claire go through curiosity, then pause when she realizes there is much more going on with this Being who is not human. You see pure fear, and admirable self control as she gathers her courage, smiles and offers Death respect and courtesy. Her body is noticeably shaking -- as her intuition informs her that this presence is not at all what she thought. The scene finishes with his promise she will always have what she found in the Coffee Shop: the love of her life. I love this movie. I'm an old lady and this film, especially this part, always makes me cry. Not sad. Not scared. Just very moved watching a convincing meeting between Youth and Ending. My family hates this movie. Don't care!

@@october71777 ---- Good point about Mr. Pitt being uncommonly handsome. I think his acting in this movie is inspired: he conveys the power Death has over all lives; on subsequent viewings you witness a Being that hungers for a human experience in all its fullness. Life craves death, and death craves life, death never got the chance to live, he's sad and longs for what everyone else had a chance at. I feel sympathy for him, he just wants to be like everyone else, but instead he witnesses everyone elses life, and only shows up when it's time to take them, making him even more sad, because it makes him realize over and over what he can never have, he longs for freedom, yet death is freedom to most, but for him life is freedom, we all want to escape.

She has the most beautifully shaped eyes to go along with the color of them I instantly fell in love with her when the "theme song" kicked in at the pool. I used to keep the shortened version of the song in my phones to listen to and think of her or anyone woman that I was dating that I thought was of merit to listen to the song and think of at the same time. Lol. I haven't had that song in a phone in ages, sadly.

This movie is enjoyable for so many reasons; among them, it's light-hearted comedy. It begins from the moment Bill tells Joe: "Excuse me, it just occurred to me that if you were to introduce you to the others and tell them who you are, I don't think anyone will be staying for dinner"; and continues through to Joe's virginal experience with peanut butter in the kitchen and Susan asking him disbelievingly "what are you eating?"; to Drew's exasperation in the board room at Joe's fun with the swivel chair and delight over butter cookies: "Who is that guy?"; the sick sister in the hospital: "Some place you picked (for a holiday)" when she realized who Joe was; "Death and taxes" -- Joe's final rejoinder to Drew after he gives him the cover story of being an IRS agent. There are probably a few more that I've missed, but in all, they add up to what was already an incredible script.

I don’t know, she seemed in love with Joe as Death too and seemed disappointed when the coffee guy returned. Especially when she kept ask questions at him knowing he would have no idea. E.g. wishing he could have met her father. Was she in love with Death or both?
@bunz66611 ай бұрын
@@grdoreza She was always in love with the Coffee Shop Joe. Death Joe didn't do anything to spoil her original interest and desire. Hence her appearing to "love" Death Joe as well. When Coffee Shop Joe reappeared at the end, she's inquisitive to confirm this scene and revelation of the situation that there were 2 Joe's. She had just witnessed Death Joe with her Dad the last few days, so her "wishing" Coffee Shop Joe could have met her father was just to gauge Coffee Shop Joe's response and confirm she was now dealing with Coffee Shop Joe.
