You know what I just realized? In so many of these shows with bratty children characters (read: bad parents), the child never have to apologize for their misbehavior. Caillou wakes up his sister? No apology. DW breaks her plane? No apology. Lil' This Idiot shouts as his mom? No apology. You have to teach your child to apologize for their misbehaviorbecause then they think that they never need to apologize to anything. No matter how bad it is, if your child realizes they've done something wrong, they have to learn to feel guilty and make up for it. Thankfully, that appears to be more common as these shows actually try to be aware of that fact. Caillou actually apologizes for his misbehavior in later episodes. DW actually feels guilty and apologizes after getting in trouble. I think there should be more episodes about kids learning to say "Sorry" politely in general. Do you see how many bad apologies they've been?

As someone that grew up with a toxic bio father, I can assure you that it wasn't always bad, 100% of the time; for me, it was more like 95% bad, 5% good. Also, as someone that grew up with a toxic parent, I can assure you, the pie is not a reward; it is a bribe. There are strings attached. Little Brown Bear may be too young now to know the difference, but to someone that has lived this whole "I'll give you this, so don't talk about earlier" thing, it is clear as day that the pie is a bribe.

Suddenly, I feel like an absolute saint with my parents. The worst I did was cut my own hair. I avoided swearing until 15. Even then, it wasn't English. And the only thing I'm fighting hard about is getting out of cyber school. I don't think I'll sound egotistical by saying I'm a bit better behaved than this bear.

I know I always compare my experiences of working in nurseries to Caillou's behaviour (seriously, I've dealt with far worse than him), so I'll try and be a bit more nuanced with this: Little Brown Bear is clearly the product of a toxic home environment. Children are like sponges, they're constantly absorbing everything that's happening around them. Caillou's parents are incompetent and neglectful, so he's clearly acting out because he hasn't been taught to understand boundaries. Little Brown Bear's mother, meanwhile, is overly strict to the point of being antagonistic. What's worse, she bribes him with treats to distract him from their earlier argument. Little Brown Bear was showing a lot of maturity in going to his mother, obviously feeling remorseful, and his mother denied him the chance to act on it. She really should have allowed him to apologise for being bratty, and she should have apologised herself for losing her temper. Then they could have shared some apple pie as a way of mending their bond. Not only is Little Brown Bear likely to grow up emotionally unstable and possibly abusive to any partners or children he ends up having, but he will most likely end up struggling with obesity and diabetes from habitual comfort eating. TL;DR, children are a reflection of their parents, in one way or another, and Little Brown Bear is in for a rough time.

Here is an unpopular opinion: Little Brown Bear > Caillou. Sure, like Caillou, Little Bear is whiny and has a relatively short temper, but if we take the entire show into account, Little Bear misbehaves less than Caillou and there are instances when he realizes the error in his ways and makes up for it. Little Brown Bear is originally a french series of books in which he is not as bad as in this show. Also, unlike Caillou´s parents, Little Bear´s parents aren´t spineless. Although they don´t give him time out or remove privileges, they do get strict with him and often throw threats (though empty threats). In the books, Little Bear is a generally neutral kid, but when he misbehaves, his parents do get angry with him. In fact, in one book, after Little Bear throws a tantrum for not getting to go to the garden, the book ends with his mum telling him that he will get spanked (and I do have to say that the closing illustration is carelessly done, because the mum doesn´t look angry).

Honestly I've been spoiled (in a good way) by my mum all my life and I legit have no memories of ever being punished, or doing anything to warrant being punished. 🤷 One time when I was little, I was having an autistic meltdown and some random old lady came up and told me I should be smacked on the bottom, and my mum defended me because, y'know, autistic meltdowns are involuntary and not the same thing as tantrums - she was always understanding of stuff like that. 💕 I had plenty of oblivious autistic moments as a kid such as infodumping and talking too loud, and my mum explained to me when I frustrated her with them, but I don't remember any deliberate misbehaviour at all. I've just always been a naturally reasonable person I guess - I was always rightly stubborn as hell against stupid rules made by stupid adults (I encountered a lot of them in school), but my mum only ever gave me sensible and properly-explained rules to follow, so I never objected to them. The whole 'not being an asshole' thing really wasn't something I needed to learn, it was just common sense and decency. 🤔 That's really not a flex, it's just funny to hear you saying that kids who get everything they want ALWAYS grow up to be awful, selfish people (though it was presumably tongue-in-cheek). 😛 It certainly does seem like that's the direction Little Brown Bear is headed in - what a bizarre budding psycho of a character to star in a kids' cartoon!

The Simpsons episode you're talking about is S4 E6 "Itchy and Scratchy: The Movie" where Bart wants to see the biggest movie of the year in theaters, but Marge and Homer have to put their foot down because he keeps misbehaving and failing school. The pizza scene does happen, but that was earlier in the episode when Bart broke Grandpa's dentures. The episode ends with Homer sitting Bart down and talking about tough love. We then fast forward to the future where Bart is a Supreme Court Justice and Homer tells him he's earn that Itchy and Scratchy Movie when it came back into theaters. Great episode.

I mean, to his credit, he did end up doing what he was told, even if he put up a fuss at first, and she didn't actually reward him until he was calm and had done as she asked. Yeah, it would have been better if he'd apologized, but I didn't think this was handled THAT badly.

Here's an idea. Stop making cartoons of kids acting like brats for little kids, pre-school age or younger. Kids that age are little sponges, and will imitate everything they see. And lazy parents plonk their kids in front of such cartoons. It's a recipe for disaster.

Counter Argument: someone should make a Max and Moritz Series. German Stories about two Boys that are absolute Menaces and need to suffer the Consequences. In one Story they end up being covered in Dough and accidentally baked if I remember correctly 🙃

@@Firestar-TV That would be cool! There's also Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids. A British book and cartoon series of cautionary tales, which punishes badly behaved kids with usually supernatural means, scaring the pants off them an the viewer. Here's a compromise. Less shows like Caillou and Little Brown Bear, and more shows like Max and Moritz and Grizzly Tales!
