Well... You can get a copy of the asset the NFT points to and even the data of the NFT itself, but the ETH network would not authenticate that said NFT is in your wallet. The ETH network doesn't prevent duplication of assets, but it does authenticate ownership of NFT. You can't duplicate an asset and automatically be authenticated that you have paid for it. Using NFT as an untamperable receipt is a legitimate use case. That is assuming you haven't hacked the real owner's wallet.

I still haven't heard one good argument for NFTs. Really, all they are is a commodity that may increase in price if it gets hyped enough. You don't even own the jpeg. Interestingly Snow Crash (the post-cyberpunk novel where the "metaverse" term was coined back in 1992) prominently featured a virtual dance club. This might be one of the aspects that can actually catch on in a limited quality, but if it does it won't involve algorithmically generated clubbers. The whole randomly shuffled avatar concept is a technological dead end because it doesn't allow for self expression, taste or showing off. Anyone who'd actually want to visit a metaverse or go clubbing sober (are already doing so through SL or VRChat but that's besides the point) want options and customization. Basically what you get with MMOs and live service games that have good character creators and varied cosmetic DLC. Of all the projects, Decentraland seems to be the closest to what a metaverse was meant to be (but still waaay far away), while these randomized character NFTs are the furthest.

I personally have no strong opinion about how you classify Snow Crash so if you want to call it cyberpunk, go for it. Bickering over definition details is silly sure, but you have to admit there is _some_ difference between works that do cyberpunk as futuristic sci-fi and those that do cyberpunk as alt-history speculative fiction (so like all the other *punk genres). At some point in the past, enough of classic cyberpunk's surface predictions have been falsified that every current cyberpunk author has to make this choice. Writing a what-if and a what-could-have-been type fiction takes a completely different mindset so the distinction is meaningful.

If you could separate NFTs from the actual "crypto" side of things, it could have potential. The problem is, the technology is entirely being used to prop up the idea of selling "nothing". The worst part is, it's been done better before, WITHOUT the blockchain. Team Fortress 2 had it. Every item in that game is unique, even if you had 100 Scorch Shots, every single one is technically unique. Every MMO where you can get items, those items are usually verified by a server of your ownership of it. And the problem with crypto is just...none of this currency that you mine has any actual value.

I feel like the sole reason why they’re spending so much is that they’re trying to replicate art industry in the digital world. TL:DR NFT projects are trying to replicate the art industry except it has no tangible value whatsoever. One of the main things that gives art value is that they’re « the original » that was hand crafted by some reputable artist and can be displayed somewhere Problem is that in the digital world, there is no « the original », every time you save or move a file, you’re just making a copy of it onto your hardware. NFTs are basically the equivalent of taking a photo of something and then making X amount of posters with each have a “unique” serial number. Except unlike posters, you’re not even given a poster or anything physical, removing any tangible value it might have. Instead you get a url link to a server (that you can’t control) and the promise said server will host a copy of the image. Of course, any NFT project worth mentioning knows this. So they distract buyers with the idea that by buying said url and promise, they’ll get access to something exclusive, ignoring the fact that in every case, their projects could be made without using NFT technology.

Do NFT games actually use your PC to calculate their functions? I thought that all servers and PCs were calculating everything all the time regardless of which game you're playing or not playing anything at all. And also, nothing even matters. A single computer could run the Ethereum network. My phone could run it. If only it was centralized of course. Those functions are nothing. It's just calculating useless hashes over and over until the solution is found. Trillions/quadrillions of hashes are wasted every hour.

Pretty sure that's not how "play to earn" works. They're not using your computer to host the game or mine crypto, they just award you tokens for playing. The tokens then get value but your ability to sell them to someone else who wants them.

As a legit blockchain dev(that also had experience with private blockchains), I can assure you that the market is full of copy-pasters that do not know any shit about what they are doing or how they are doing... Disadvantage of stuff being public and transparent is that anyone can literally copy-paste any smart contract and claim like its their code. I've seen blockchain devs who claim seniors with 3 years of experience and do not even know the technicals of the blockchain they are working at. People develop a copy-paste smart contract on any chain, and slap Ethereum Dev, Solana Dev, BSC Dev, and more shit like that on their resume... Entry barrier is a joke in comparison to other development fields. Also I've encountered a lot of Frontend Devs, who hate Backend stuff to the gills, yet they spin-up their dapp with only copy paste contracts. If anyone wants to hire a blockchain dev, I would 100% recommend that they hire someone with Backend Dev experience. I've seen that Backend Devs, who have transitioned to Blockchain Dev (including me) tend to be more interested in the technicals as well as security aspects. Other than that market is absolute shitshow where there are institutes, whose legitimacy is a big fucking question, giving out these made-up Blockchain Expert, NFT Expert, Metaverse Expert certificates in a 1 or 2 month courses for $100+... but noone questions who tf is a Metaverse Expert...

I had some good fun on VRchat doing the pandemic lockdowns. I had the gear for it, and did not have to spend a dime on it, while being there. This sounds like someone want's to make money on you, for something you already have for free.

What scares me more than there being no substantive product in these projects and that they'll likely just fizzle out, is that everyone said the same thing about social media, and now we have all these social media companies raking in hundreds of billions a year just from ad revenue. Hopefully this doesn't happen the same way for NFTs/Metaverse where its main source of revenue is simply advertising and it essentially becomes a virtual reality version of social media.
