Mississippi Hill Country Blues Guitar offers a look into the Hill Country technique byway of songs from legendary artists Fred McDowell, R.L. Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Junior Kimbrough, Rosa Lee Hill and Ranie Burnette.
For this lesson Tom Feldmann has compiled a grouping of songs that highlight the individualistic traits of each artist and also gives a well rounded grasp of the genre as a whole. Though many of these artists played slide guitar, Feldmann focuses solely on their non slide arrangements in Open G, Standard, Open D and Crossnote tunings.
Hypnotic grooves, steady guitar riffs, and few chord changes are the trademark of Mississippi Hill Country Blues and this lesson hands you the keys to some of the greatest examples the genre has to offer.
Titles include: Black Cat Bone (Jessie Mae Hemphill), Dough Roller Blues (Ranie Burnette), That's Alright (Fred McDowell), Poor Black Mattie (R.L. Burnside), Jumper Hanging Out On The Line (R.L. Burnside), Meet Me In The City (Junior Kimbrough), Standing In The Doorway Crying (Jessie Mae Hemphill), I'm Crazy About You Baby (Fred McDowell), Count The Days Until I'm Gone (Rosa Lee Hill)

Tom Feldmann has taught me practically everything I know about the Blues. I make a personal mission of mine to buy every one of his DVD's and I advise all who read this to do the same. Certainly money well spent his teaching style is the finest I have ever seen.

Tom, I believe every bluesman you have covered in your lessons would be proud to have you as a torch bearer for teaching their music. I love your voice as much as your playing and teaching style; My heart hears your voice a millisecond before my ears do- maybe it is your heart I hear before your voice, if that makes sense. Something ethereal there. Your love for these fellas is obvious. Thank you for honoring these blues musicians with your talent, scholarship, and love, and keeping this beautiful music alive and such a pure joy to learn. Keep up the great work. Health & happiness to you & yours.

It's a Franklin Jumbo. www.franklinguitarcompany.com Nick Kukich, the luthier behind Franklin Guitars, is one of the top builders working today. He is responsible for the renaissance of the OM body guitars starting back in the 70s and, with input from Stefan Grossman, developed the Jumbo body guitar in the 1980s.

This is too precise and technically perfect. And it's being played on a $4K dollar acoustic instead of an old beater. Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) absolutely kills this.

@stubdo16

narch45 keep practising and in a few months it'll be second nature. Try starting just doing bass notes IN TIME for ages and add in the odd note from the 'thin' strings, gradually adding notes. Might take a few weeks or more but you will get there.

@@stubdo16 basically, yeh... if you listen close to tom he mentions watchin' junior's live recordings. it's a musician thing... in sense of how seamless you can make the changes (and that comes with focus and practice.. a lot of that). i'm not even sure it can be "taught". tom is close to junior's style, but junior's playin' is incredibly smooth (like a lot of the great blues players). considering junior does this on an electric (that uses harder strings), you gotta respect these guys for their dedication. peace. thanks for reading.

I'm struggling with the timing of this song. Some bars seem to be in 6/4 and most of the song in 4/4. Anyone have a chart for the structure of this song? The tab isn't all that clear to me. I go by feel and can't use the metronome on this one because of this.

+12Radius. In country blues an unwound G string is very common. Fred McDowell, R.L. Burnside, Son House, John Hurt, Skip James, Brownie McGhee, Lightnin' Hopkins...just to name a few, all used unwound G strings. Not necessary to use one, but I prefer it. Best, -Tom Feldmann

With respect - The term "country blues" is commonly misused. This is the original form of the music which was around about 40 years before any country music appeared. I like country music but it needs to get it's own name - lol. Here's an example of country blues.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGqXZZ2Dqdpph8U. lol
