Im growing to LOVE parrotlets! These guys are SO intelligent! It really makes your interactions a lot easier. My father owns exactly one and hes very social and will spend time with anyone willing to hang out with him! His english is getting freaky good as he refuses to speak, and he is definitely a bit of a big baby, whining that he wants something is what he uses his vocal chords for, but at least he’s very quiet! Cant wait to start breeding them!

I know so much what you mean when you say bonded to 👉 you, a bird for you. I have 11 misfits and I felt so much the "urge" of having one ... for me. I got a pineapple. Knew nothing of green cheeks, more of a poicephalus person. A clown, a teenager. The things she does is crazy, like enrolling toilet paper, throwing things down from counters, tables, eating peanut butter or jam straight from the jar when I am preparing breakfast. Name something she is doing it. She is a real velcro, a sweetheart. I now know that I needed that special bond with at least one of my bird. I have a parotlet ... such a great little bird. He is very, very playful. Got him from a breeder that did not want him anymore. He was more than six or seven years old and never manipulated or sociolized. His mate breeder almost killed him a few times reason why she gave him to me, she could not sell him (a money object for her). He thinks he is an amazone or an Ara, but in a little nutshell. I LUV him so so much.

She's gorgeous! I got my little girl at around 8 weeks old and since she was hand raised, she immediately begged to come out of her cage and hang out with humans. It was pretty easy to get her used to our budgies, but surprisingly we had a really tough time getting her to try new food!

I had a parrotlet that I bought from a friend at one year old. All I did was hold him and sing to him that first night and it was love! We were so bonded and we would watch TV at night with him either nuzzling into my neck or crawling up in my hair. He talked up a storm and gave me kisses on command with a smacking sound. I absolutely adored him just as much as I ever have any of my dogs. I can’t say that for my other two parrots. The breeder told me to feed him as much seed as he wanted which I did along with fruits and vegetables and Harrison’s pellets. At three years old I Took him to the vet for a physical and when she took blood and spun it his plasma looked like a milkshake instead of clear like it should be. It was because of all the seeds and if it had gone on he would’ve died of fatty liver disease and I wouldn’t have known any different. I think since parrotlets are distantly related to Amazons they are prone to fatness and fatty liver disease and should never be fed anything but pellets and fruits and vegetables. My Kiwi only lived 13 years I suspect his life was shortened by the two years of eating all kinds of seeds. It has been years since he died but I still miss him every day he was the most wonderful pet a person could ever have and I definitely recommend them to anyone who wants to get a parrot! They are just as smart and just as loving as a big parrot in a small easy to care for a package with small poops and a small appetite and tiny toys that don’t cost anything at all compared to larger parrots that need expensive toys. P.S. you said you preferred paper towels over newspapers, but I have read the ink in newspapers retards mold growth so I use it still.

PippyPets hi, I was wondering if you had any advice on my little 3yo ‘Pipsqueak’, that I got from a large family of kids...who came with a few issues. I’ve had him now since March and mostly he’s a sweet little parrotlet... But... he just became aggressive against my hands- overnight. He seems to think they are independent of me, so while he typically like, loves me...idk what has gotten into him. He has been on a weekly attack schedule on my forearms, with no rhyme or reason and virtually no for-warning, but I’ve sorta gotten used to that over the months . But since he doesn’t even give me a hint as to why he’s doing such, I have no idea how to break him of it (except to tell him no and put him in his cage- which he hates). He much rather be on me. I thought maybe he’s going through adolescence since he’s been a bit rough with my earlobes, and lips even- which he typically has a full blown love affair with...but he’s always been such a temperamental little bird...I just don’t know what to think! I’ve been able to train just about any type of parrot, and even budgies! But this little guy is so strange and set in his ways, I almost wonder if he’s older than what they claim, as he sorta acts like a grumpy old man. Anyhow, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you☺️

What a cutie. I used to breed these wonderful birds. I always handled my babies so they would go to their new homes tame. They and lovebirds were always my favorite. You are right you really should handle them when you get home. Waiting makes them more likely to longer to adjust. I always say if you want small bird with a big bird personality these or lovebirds are the best. And keeping one does make them more bonded to you.

I'm sorry you had a poor experience with these birds, but they do have a tendency to be aggressive in the sense where if they have to choose between being submissive or fighting, they'll choose to fight. You might have read their body language wrong or a case of simple miscommunication. It's common, but birds aren't really 'mean' by nature, they'll just defend themselves if they feel threatened.

I had been trying to teach her brother kiss kiss with the sound and she made the sound at me when she was alone with me yesterday. I'm going to work on talking with her, in hopes she starts to talk. So, I’ve had tons of different birds over the years/fostered, but I’ve never had a parrotlet til yesterday. He seems to be quick sweet overall, but he gets really snippy when it comes to looking at him on my shoulder (where he wants to be). He also has a beef with my ear. He doesn’t bite it, but he does that aggressive pure and head butts it. He seems to be the standard temperamental of this breed from what I’ve read... I was wondering, since he’s about 4yrs, are these still easy to train? He seems to have gotten upset from the first few hours of taking to him- he didn’t want me to leave the room, and chirped loudly. He seems to be a fun little passive aggressive guy... I’m hoping he’ll tolerate my old pup since we rehab sparrows regularly and he was looking forward to his own buddy. So far, the bird seems to like to tease him. I’m thing of renaming him Dr. Jekyl Any info on him would help🙂Thanks. Your girl is so pretty!

When you purchase a baby parrotlet, is it better to not handle them for really long periods of time? I heard somewhere that they need to sleep a lot. Is that true?
@PippyPets
@PippyPets 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. They need at least 12 hours of sleep at night however, you should definitely handle them frequently - if you don’t, they’ll go wild again quite quickly. If they weren’t tame when you got them go slow, but definitely try to interact with them/tame them multiple times a day. You want your baby to associate its new home with you as the core part of it, not it’s home/cage as its everything with you as an addition they can take or leave it they like. Of course use your discretion in all situations but generally ifs good to handle frequently right off the bat.

Do you know how to take care of one? What will you feed her? Also, you should watch hours upon hours of BirdTricks, they teach you everything there is to know. Dangers include scented candles, self clean ovens, teflon (non stick) pans, hair dryers and hair irons (their teflon fumes kill a bird), waffle irons, etc. They can die from fatty liver diesease from improper diet. A cage should be powder coated, not from China for safety, and hopefully stainless steel. An aviary from Corner's Limited would be best. Tell me everything you know.

for the gender : look it up, ik it’s not helpful but eh. if they are the same gender it may get a few problems so may as well separate them, and yes, they will bond, but you can do a bonding session in another room separately. hope this helped :)

You should consider volunteering at a rescue and seeing if getting a bird is for you. I also recommend watching BirdTricks. Also getting a bird from a rescue is great because 1. You're helping a rescue, two, it's generally cheaper, and three, you get to pick a bird you've bonded with and personality you like.

Hello, you're videos are so helpful and informative. I'm looking at getting a male and female pair of Parrotlets at 8 weeks old. I would like to tame them, can I put them together if they are already bonded, as they are from the same breeder, or should I keep them separate? I know that by keeping them seperate they will/may form a better bond with me, but at the same time I feel that if I put them together they wont be lonely, when I'm not around. Can you please make a video of how your Parrotlets are housed, as I'm really interested? Thanks in advance.

I feel like you shouldn't get a parrot at that age if you can't have a professional weaner with you or if you are one. Temperature of food being a few degrees off or angle you slide the food down with a syringe really matters for sickness and death. I think you should get a two year old parrot from a breeder if you really want to buy one, but I suggest getting one from a rescue-you can hang out with it prior to getting it and rescuing a bird is really helpful. As for getting two-can you take care of two? Also by not being around, how long do you intend on not being around? Because that shouldn't be the intention. Also if they're not bonded, they might fight. Also, if you get a male and a female pair, do you mean two males and two females? What if they breed? Anyways, if you want to learn more about housing and if you should get a pair or not and on weaning and general care, including household dangers, avian vets, and dangerous cages, you should watch a ton of BirdTricks videos prior and work at a rescue to see if getting a bird is for you.

I have a question there is a couple of parrotlet and they are 11 months old, very bounded since little , I just want to buy the male one, because I want the bird to bond only with me and I’m scare what will happen after if I separated them, what is your suggestion? I can only afford one, also can I tame the 11 months old and can he learn to talk still ?

I don't think you should separate them. I also think you should look into getting one from a rescue. Do you know how to take care of one? And also, is he weaned? And any bird of any age can talk. However, if talking is your main issue, don't think you should get a bird. Please do your research, watch BirdTricks, work at a rescue, maybe foster a bird, and then get one.

@PippyPets

Definitely house in separate cages and don’t let them ever see each other, otherwise they’ll bond more strongly to each other and really not care about you much, particularly if you may have decreased time to spend with them overall. It’s a tough call if you choose to go with a single bird - have you considered leaving the radio or TV on when gone?

Yes they can. The chances are greater if you house the Parrotlet separately and in a different room from your other birds, and if you interact with the Parrotlet alone during out of cage time the majority of the time.

it is the species. They are the most common parrotlet, if you google it you'll find more about the other species. Pacific parrotlet can also be called celestial, the are naturally green with patches of dark blue on the male. The most common mutation is blue (also with darker blue patches on males), but you can also find yellow or white, although those mutations can weaken their health so better to stick with green and blue.

@@aquahits5674 So either it’s just not used to you, or it is being possessive of its cage. If that’s the case, make sure you keep treats handy on you and when you are over by the bird in the cage, give a treat. This way the bird associates you with good things/food. For now when your bird bites, just back off and try again a bit later with some treats. Make sure you stay consistent! Trying every 10 minutes for two hours. It will take the bird a bit of time to get used to the fact that you aren’t leaving, but this method should work. If you have more questions you can ask me!

Just be sure to do your research! Also, birds need a cage. You cant have them out constantly. Please be sure to get a good cage! Most big cages have huge wire spacing, which is bad for parrotlets.
@juliusroman8616
@juliusroman8616 3 жыл бұрын
Please watch BirdTricks. And then volunteer at a rescue to see how much work they are and see if you have the time and resources to take care of one. And never impulse buy, which you might be doing right now. I suggest you get an aviary from Corner's Limited. Also making them free is a bad idea. They can get into things they shouldn't and you can't make your house 100 percent birdproof or 100 percent supervised. A cage is like a bedroom, if you get toys they should want to be in it. Cages shouldn't be made in China and they should be free of galvanized metals, like zinc, copper, lead, etc. The best cage is stainless steel.
