Thank you for doing a species profile on Brown Headed Parrots. I have rarely heard about them. I would like a larger parrot. I live in a condo. I never hear any noise from my neighbors, but I just figured the bigger the louder. Her squeak nothing. Even when I had a Cockatiel many years ago, she made more noise!

For people living in apartments or condos, Meyer’s parrots seem to be very similar to the brown headed parrot, and they can be pretty quiet. Their noises are in the higher frequencies, so it doesn’t penetrate walls as easily as lower frequencies. When I lived in a condo, my neighbors said that they would only hear them when our door was open.

I believe in telling the bad with the good and most all parrots have some of both and prospective owners need to know. What you failed to mention is they tend to be biters and if you don’t know how to stop it when they are very young you will be stuck with a biter for the next 30 years. The other bad thing is they usually believe all other birds must die! My sweet girl tried to kill my parrotlet and terrorized my Pionus until I had to clip her wings to protect both of them. This is not just my experience I have exchanged this experience with quite a few other brown head owners over the years and they had the same two problems, biting and trying to kill other birds. I love my Ariel to pieces and I’ve had her since she was just weaned and is now 18 years old. Up until she was about age 4 she was a sweetheart, but I guess the adult hormones kicked in. I would never give her up even though many of my friends have told me to do so, but I never recommend that anybody get a brown head unless they are very experienced with parrots and parrot training. I try to direct first time owners to parrotlets, budgies, cockatiels and lovebirds. Of course any bird can bite but brown heads are deceptive because they look so small but as my veterinarian told me they have one of the hardest bites for their size of any other parrot and I have the scars to prove it. Also when they bite unlike other parrots they don’t let go you have to open their beak and remove them. On the good side they have a wonderful a faint lovely smell that I love. They are very loyal to their owner and they are very quiet. And as you said they can play by themselves and can spend hours destroying toys. For the experienced bird enthusiast they make a great pet but not for beginners.. Thank you for mentioning Harrison’s which I think is the best food on the market and the fresh fruits and vegetables. If there’s one thing that I find with most owners that I constantly try to educate them on is that they feed them nuts and seeds and then they die young with the fatty liver disease.

Thank you for another really informative video. It’s really clear that you are good natured and calm with your birds. They all seem so content to be around you. I had a cockatiel I was bonded to for 23 years. I raised him from 6 months old when I was 13. He recently passed away and I am in that grief process. I will likely wait another year before getting another bird but I know I want a medium sized parrot that I can take with me on outings in warmer weather. I have been looking into the Brown Headed Parrot and the Piones so these videos have been very helpful. Some of the folks that comment on these parrot videos are bizarre! I can’t help but laugh a little as someone angrily types that their bird is NOT sweet and bites everyone as though it’s your fault. Lol, maybe if you’re the type of person to type random hate comments to people you don’t know, your bird may be irritated in your presence like everyone else! Anyway, thanks for the nice content.

I have a nine month old female. She vocalizes in the morning when it’s time to get up. They all call when it’s time to come out of their cages. Apart from that, they are all quiet. I have 2 green cheek conures, a brown head like you, a Quaker and a Moustache Parakeet. I had a parrotlet, and I didn’t find him dusty. They have their own room, and I made a climbing net to cover the full ceiling. They have a play station in the living room, but don’t seem to like it, yet. They fly out of the room to the living room, and fly back in. They are happy and quiet. And I don’t have hormone problems, as I make sure they get 14 hours of sleep.

I can attest that brown head parrots are good birds. Our Theo was such a good baby. He was sick and died at 18 months old. Maybe we were unlucky. I miss him so much. They are calmer than conures, quieter and enjoy our company but can be a bit more independant than conures. Our Theo did not enjoy bath too much. Bathing in his bowl once a month was good for him. He hated the cage though. And they bite harder than conures too because they obviously have a bit bigger beak. Overall I would recommend.

Nice video. We have a boy and he is completely the opposite of your sweet, quiet bird. He is very noisy, very fiesty, very playful, very cute, very over the top everything AND very bitey!! He is totally in love withy husband, but just bites me. Even his calls are completely different to your bird. He makes a very loud whistle sound and flock calls both of us as soon as we leave the room. We love him with all our hearts. He is spoiled and has his own room, he is never in a cage. He sleeps on top of his cage. He has his own tree and toy ox. He loooves playing. He loves to bath himself in a doggy bowl and only baths when we put fresh water in. He can talk. He can say two words : Hello and Buddy (our cockatiel).

Thanks so much for watching and for leaving a comment! Overall, Brown Heads tend to have a slightly more stable temperament, but Meyer’s are a close second. @PippyPets

Brown Heads tend to be on the quieter side overall. I’d say they’re also a bit less active, but again, they’re all individuals. Based on my experience, I’d say overall, Brown Heads are more even-tempered in a greater variety of situations, provided they’re well socialized, but again, that’s not written in stone. Hope that helps. :-)

Would be better to get a caique than a brown head. Caiques are very funny little birds And constantly entertaining. Brown heads on the other hand can be very problematic and are extremely good at fighting very hard and they usually don’t like other birds and try to kill them.

Just a reminder, definitely do take these things with a grain of salt because as she said, some act completely differently than others so just brace yourself in case they don’t act how you expected them to. My brown head for example is very aggressive and EXTREMELY loud, he screams and calls my name pretty much all day long, even if I’m with him he’ll scream in my ear if he gets anxious. He bonded only to me and hates everyone else and will even try to attack other people. When we bought him we did a lot of research thinking he would make a great pet because of what everyone was saying, and he did act like what everyone said at first, but once he reached adulthood he became very aggressive, loud, and territorial. Take these things into consideration when buying any type of parrot because these are temperaments many parrots can have.

How are brown headed parrots with other birds? I have a green cheek conure that I've had for a little over three years now who I absolutely adore. I want to slowly grow a flock up to three or four birds. I would like to get slightly larger passive birds for the other ones. My conure is a velcro bird (which I love) but having multiple birds that are 24/7 like she is might be a little much haha. I don't see any aggression on her end at all she's a complete lover. But I worry about bringing home a bird that's two or three times her size and then a fight happening where she ends up really hurt or worse. So I've been trying to identify the most mellow and passive of the medium bird species. Do you think a brown headed parrot would be a safe bet? I've actually also thought about getting a pionus too. Do you have a recommendation on a best fit? Thanks for the advice.
@PippyPets
@PippyPets 4 жыл бұрын
It's really difficult to answer that question and ultimately, the decision is up to you. When bringing multiple parrots into the same living space, there's never a safe bet, unfortunately - it really just depends on the individual birds and the timing - parrots that get along great at one point in their lives may change at a different point of their lives, etc. A Brown Head might be an option - I'd tend to say they'd be an overall better option than a Pionus (a GCC's temperament tends to irritate and unnerve Pionus in my experience), but to be honest, my GCC unnerves all my parrots, including my Brown Head - GCCs tend to be more hyper, outgoing, spazzy and nippy in general. My GCC is more aggressive and nervous than my Brown Head - they don't care for each other. You also need to take into consideration possessiveness on your GCC's part - if he's bonded with you, he may get jealous and attack any other bird coming into his perceived space, or even begin bitting you. Just know, you'll always need to supervise them when together and be prepared that they may never get along - you may always have to give them separate out of cage time and ensure neither flies onto each other's cages when out (which can lead to one or both getting toes bitten off). Have you considered getting another conure? Or what about a Quaker or an Indian Ringneck? I know Ringneck can tend to have a more outgoing personality and that may be more similar to a GCC - you *may* have a higher possibility of success with that species?

You can search bird and/or rescue pages on FB - post on there and the word will get around. Or contact your local parrot club and I’m sure someone there can help you. Try and take a pic of the bird and share it’s last known location. In the meantime - try putting out a cage with the door open and some seed in it to see if it will lure the bird into it. Parrots are vulnerable to predators, cold and starvation when lost. All the best!

Is your brown head's beak color unusual for this species? Most of the pictures online seem to suggest that most brown head beaks are dark.
@Serendipity-w4r
@Serendipity-w4r 2 жыл бұрын
My brown headed parrot has the same color beak as hers. The black might go up a little bit more but this varies between birds, usually the top of the beak is more pink and the tip is black, going up to the middle or top of the beak. As they age their beak gets darker as well. My brown headed parrot’s beak was more pink when he was a baby, now it’s a much paler shade of pink, almost like an off white, with the tip still being black but further up his beak than before.

My Brownhead is MEAN. He was a real sweetie until he turned 2 and then he started biting (for blood and flesh) and the only way he can be handled is with a wooden dowel. I have to watch him when he is out of the cage and I am in the room else he'll climb down when I'm not aware and sneak up on me to attack my feet - and once latched on he is very difficult to pry off. He DOES allow me to pet him when he's in the mood but I have to ask (Pet?) and if he's game he'll make a circle twice, lower his head and make a certain noise. I do not take my eyes off him during this time, however, as he cannot be trusted. Wish I had one that was a sweet as Keeleigh's. (my boy is now 23 years old and I have had him since he was a baby).

I never ever recommend them to anybody. I love mine to pieces, but I wish she didn’t bite. I think if you start with them when they’re very young if you know what you’re doing and admittedly I didn’t, you can train them not to buy but they love to buy it and they love to kill other birds

Agreed! You’re not colour blind haha. I don’t know why they’re called Brown Heads - they’re should be called Grey Heads. 😊

To the person who said on social media that Brown Headed Parrots are quiet birds are quiet and perfect birds for apartments... You literally need to be sued. You obviously have a female. The males are extremely noisy. Because of YOU we are now sitting with a really bad situation where we have an extremely noisy bird and getting into big trouble with our neighbours and landlords please stop fishing out in correct advice! 😢

There are no "quiet parrots". There are some that are not loud all the time but very loud when they are. Pionus are also called apartment parrots, but they are can be extremely loud when they want. They just aren't loud all the time.

Did you have a chance to read the video notes and/or watch to the entire video(s). I had stated those were temporary cage (setups).
