Join Gary and my good self as we take trip down memory lane with his fabulous Suzuki GT250X7. We have a good look round this original classic late seventies, early eighties 2 stoke 250cc motorcycle. I then take her for a spin and experience the thrill off riding a fast 250 2 stroke for the first time in 40 odd years

I love my country but, I absolutely hate the politicians who enacted legislation (EPA and the like) that stopped the American people from having access to all of the awesome bikes that every other country on the planet had access to.

I had one of the first, crank bearings went after 800 miles. They refused to replace them on guarantee saying I’d thrashed it! Stripped it down without a manual (it didn’t exist!). Had it for a few years and although I liked it they reached the 100 because they were so light! Just never felt solid enough for me. After that I had at least three KH250s, much better quality and solidness (to say nothing of the sound😃).

What a fun bike! I’m guessing they were somewhat affordable new at the time? I would love to ride that around & watch the heads turn as people of today heard that glorious 2 stroke sound on a street bike. 🔥🏍️🔥

I was wondering also, what did you do when you had to fill up the gas tank at a filling station: did you carry some 2 stroke oil with you to add to the gas/petrol?
@shuttersandspeed

It took me around a year to save up back then to buy it especially when you factor in the insurance. A lot of people signed up on hire purchase though and the local towns were alive with the sound and intoxicating smell of 2 stokes roaring around.
@shuttersandspeed

They had a separate oil tank that fed the oil in with a small pump. You just had to keep an eye on the level.

Fantastic little bikes which were reffered to as a 125 on steroids! I would love to see a 17 year old of today used to riding a mini r1 125 with an open exhaust all noise and no go jump on an X7 and have a blast. I know which one he would like to keep even though its as old as his grandad. I used to go to snetterton around the same time and the production racing was huge back then and our little suzuki used to dominate the rd250,s on pretty much any circuit as the results page in mcn showed.

@shuttersandspeed Жыл бұрын
Yes i remember it well. I bumped into a chap called Greg Page who was a prominent production racer back then at a local bike meet. He got into the 250 production class when the RD250LC came along which then went on to dominate the class. He was also pictured in one of the bike magazines back getting a Kawasaki Z1300 6 cylinder onto it's back wheel.

Nooo. This is the later model, which came with black plastic dials. The earlier models had two chrome clocks and looked much sleeker and nicer. Loved these so much I had one in every colour. Red, white and blue.

Nice video! I had 3 Suzuki AX 100s. Here in Argentina, the dealerships continue selling 2-stroke motorcycles. The Suzuki AX 100 is the 'daughter' of the GT 250 X7 and a beautiful and very fun motorcycle too!

Yes, but, for the next year, the sale of two-stroke engines will be discontinued here for emissions reasons. There's nothing quite like the sound and smell of two-stroke engines.@@shuttersandspeed

I had one many moons ago now, full Terry Beckett motor, Microns and it went like a scalded rat, 😎. If I was the owner I'd be checking the right hand crank seal as its smoking quite a bit, better safe than sorry.

I bought the first generation of this bike back in April of 1979 and it was blue with the much better looking separate speedo and tacho. And it didn't have those nasty black turn signals. The bike was fast, but had an annoying squeal on the front disc brake, each time I used it. And after only 6 months, the bike developed piston slap, after only 1500 miles. I had a Honda Dream before it, which felt like a Big Bike, and seemed more sophisticated, compared to the rather cheap and nasty X7. But, that is just me opinion. I went on to own another 2 Honda's. But, as the saying goes, "You pay your money, and you take your choice" Having said that. I have always "Loved Suzuki's" and lusted after a GT750 "Kettle" and got to ride one back in 1986 and Wow, what a machine, with that "Distinctive Crackle and Pop" of the earlier Suzuki's. Sorry, but I did not like the X7, much preferred the earlier GT Suzuki's.

I also had one in 1979, got the ports done by Terry Becket in Nottingham, and fitted K&N filters as well as ace bars. I was sure i was going to be the next Barry Sheene. At 17 years old it felt amazing the freedom it gave me. And a damned site faster than my AP50 😎

Altho the LC 250 was the talk of town, i'd choose the X7 Suzi. It was a tough & reliable air cooled twin. And some engine porting & carb jetting wd leave the LC trailing behind. And if i'm not wrong the price tag & maintenance came cheaper than the LC.
@shuttersandspeed
@shuttersandspeed Жыл бұрын
No you were not wrong I had a LC250 as well and in standard trim which was a couple of hundred quid dearer ( a lot of money in 1980) was a little quicker but not by much
@Veloce2000
@Veloce2000 Жыл бұрын
Thanks & appreciate your affirmation. Nvrtheless the LC too was a great bike. As for me i prefered the X7 as the engine was simpler to tune & being a miser, i cheaper means "best" for me😂😅
