I worked on the Nimrod and its many varients in the late 70's early 80's. Those submarine hunters were good in their day. They were also multi functional capable of all sorts. AEW Nimrod would have been awesome too if the computers had been up to it. That really was a "what if" scenario. Tech moves on so let's hope these "bad boys" have the same promise that Nimrod had in its many guises and could have had if AEW could have come in on budget WITH the RIGHT computing capacity. One things for sure those who knew The Nimrod loved it even if she could be a bit of a *****####****sometimes. (affectionately, of course). They were a helluva aircraft.

It's interesting that they are all located in the same place, I would guess that in the event of a war the enemy would be able to knockout all the aircraft at the same time with one blow to that one location. Why not station them at different sites?

Are those wingtips more efficient than the standard 737 Winglets?
@Shadowfax-1980
@Shadowfax-1980 2 жыл бұрын
They are. The standard 737 (and A320) have maximum wingspan requirements based on their class, so they have to use winglets. The P-8 doesn’t have to operate under the same limitations so it can go with the raked wing tips, which are more efficient.

Basically, the airframe is a 737. The same as our new P-7 Wedgetails, which are also 737 based , that will replace our Boeing 707 based E-3's currently based at RAF Waddington.

@@davidhodgkinson6234 You call it a P-8 . It’s just a label as a little Googling will demonstrate. Civilian 737’s spend most of their life at high altitude which preserves their fatigue life. That they have known earlier than anticipated crack development at major structural connections, suggests that their military role will present structural problems even earlier.

Whatever happened to buying British? We now get our planes from America F35 & P8 and Trident do we build anything for ourselves but fairy castle Aircraft Carriers we cannot fill with a full compliment of planes? I am still trying to work out how the UK needs this alleged super-carrier? as part of its Defence of UK interests.

Sold off so many times. It’s a shame these are what we have now. I’m sure for the here and now they are sufficient but we could’ve been so much stronger in so many ways had we completed our own development of the Nimrod. British industry Sold down the river so many times by the same mob. It’s tragic.
@1chish
@1chish 2 жыл бұрын
In general answer to your question we must build something as we are the second largest aerospace industry and the 8th largest manufacturing industry. You mention the F-35 and forget that as we are the sole Tier One Partner we build some 20% of every F-35 delivered across the world. Without the UK and RR there would be no F-35B. The only reason we are behind on aircraft numbers is slow delivery from LM. We have 24 delivered out of the initial 48 ordered. So we have the numbers to put a Squadron on the carriers but this exercise for PoW is about working the ship and crew up after refit and the testing of command and control of the new flagship. It has already flown F-35s and so they are not needed for this exercise. And anyway carriers never have fixed wing aircraft on board in port. Still lets not have facts get in the way of the now ritual slagging off of a great country right? And what on earth are you dribbling about 'fairy castle carriers'? Do explain THAT.
