Today we look into the Russian soldiers that are voluntarily surrendering to Ukraine. This is an effort facilitated by the Ukrainian 'I Want To Live' project which has assisted more than 300 Russian soldiers in surrendering so far in the war. Some of these soldiers are fleeing the Russian army because they simply want to survive and maybe seek asylum in Europe, but others are choosing to defect to Ukraine where they will head back into the fight against Putin.

Our western mindset makes it very difficult to understand, but it makes complete sense to them. In many ways western and Russian mentalities are opposites. We believe in and celebrate individualism. They believe in the collective. We think of people voluntarily joining the military as a somewhat selfless act for which we are thankful. In Russia it's expected. Our soldiers defend values and freedoms. Their soldiers defend the empire or Russian greatness. We can go on and on... mentalities differ. Of course I'm generalizing here. This isn't true of every individual. There are plenty in Russia with very western mindsets too, particularly those who grew up with western movies and never knew the USSR, but there are still differences.

Thank god my parents immigrated from Russia 25 years ago when I was a child. To Israel of all places. And now instead of fighting in Ukraine I serve in Gaza. But I had conversations with friends - what would I do if I stayed. Would I fight ? For me now it's an easy answer - I would surrender as fast as possible, probably would run toward Ukraine on the first night. I am ready to die for Israel (I would rather not to put it mildly, but willing to take the risk). But I am definitely not ready to risk anything for Putin. Not Russia, Putin. As far as I see it, Putin is enemy number one of Russian people. But I also don't know if I would take arms against Russian forces. It still aches me to see Russian death toll as much as it is to see Ukrainian. I also don't know if I would still prefer to surrender if I never immigrated, and was raised on Russian propaganda. I don't know. It sucks. This war sucks, all wars suck.

@@nicolasolton no, at this point, I don’t see an and to this. About my view. Well, Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthies all has death to Israel in their motto/manifesto. So we have to fight them. And it’s funny to me in a sad way when people say “oh, death to Israel doesn’t mean death to Israelis”. In my reserve service I am in a Homefront, in a what is called the search and rescue forces, and I was part of the clean up after October 7th. Removing burned cars, demolition of buildings, mapping the destruction of kibbutzim, search of dead bodies and more. And as part of Homefront, visited funerals, spoke to relatives. I have seen exactly what “Death to Israel” means. Many of the atrocities were not done by hamas, they were busy with the army bases (which by the way they attacked our main base and killed 4 people I knew personally. They killed more, but I knew 4 of them). Most atrocities were done by civilians, and the videos of Noa’s body paraded under cheering of the crowd still haunts me. And while many civilians do not support hamas and their actions, many do. Before october 7 I was very pacifistic, I was for 2 state solution, I thought we need peace, now, I don’t know. No one knows. Especially who claim to know.

It depends on way more than just the current leader and governments. Governments range in power from absolute, to very slow and limited, to functionally non-existent. Countries in the middle bit are amongst the most stable, second to absolute. If you're in a functionaly limited one, then the leaders etc matter much less than your personal freedoms, culture, economy, social mobility, stability, etc. Russia has an essentially absolute government, but it also lacks most of the others - except relative stability compared to how much of a mess the county is, and a really deep and ingrained culture. It's pretty easy to see why so few have any allegiance to the entire system. And even the culture isn't that functional here as Ukraine wasn't viewed by the general population as an enemy, but very close. To the point where the government had to push a ton of false narratives as they knew they couldn't just flip Ukraine into the enemy overnight. It's a fear and brain washing system, and as soon as the risk outweighs that fear most just flip rapidly. Because why have any true belief in the system

Russian leaders and more importantly, people, considered West to have been an ally, or at least a reliable partner. The kind you can make deals with, like USSR used to make with the west Reality turned out to be different. And now it's a very simple situation, where you either want Russia to win a war or to lose a war. No, should our troops lose, Putin won't be the only one paying the price. Maybe he won't be paying it at all Poster above would call those simple things "lies" or "narratives". They've not, they're simple truths.

@@aleksandrs1422 NATO expansion isn't a threat to Russia, its only a threat to Russia's ability to dominate other countries. In the last two years NATO has become bigger, stronger and closer. Ukraine has moved further to the West and reasonable Russians don't feel threatened whatsoever. Putin himself said that he's not concerned with the possibility of NATO attacking Russia. Everybody knows that NATO is defensive and that the people in Western countries are more interested in their economies then starting a war with Russia. Nobody in the West wants to live in poverty so that our money can be used to attack Russia, and everybody knows it. On the other hand, a lot of us are willing to spend and fight to prevent Russia from expanding beyond its current borders (Which does not include the temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine). Preston, do you have any data on how many Russians request not to be exchanged back to Russia? I have always wondered at this, since conditions in Russia are so bad, and also the fact that Ukraine needs its POWs back. Also, does Ukraine guarantee this to all Russians not wanting to go back to Russia? Thanks.

all im going to say is that if soldiers defected from the usa army in iraq because they believed that their government was lying and that they were fighting an unjust and unprovoked war, the response would not be the same in this comments section. The usa would have done the same thing the russian army did, probably worse

These are some brave dude. When this war first started i was happy to see or hear of any Russian casualties but as time went on I realized that ww dont know which soldiers disagree and are just trying to survive until their contracts are up. Don't get me wrong I know there are many unhumanly evil Russians fighting there but as this story shows not ALL of them are bad. There is many more willing to or are contemplating soing the same thing as these men. These dudes that do this are not traitors when they are defecting to the good side, they are heros. I hope to hear a lot more stories about guys like this. I remeber hearing about a helicopter piolare who defected as well. Unfortunately he was found in Italy and assassinated.
