Dr. Daniel Caine, research scientist working for The Corporation, while searching for the evidence that crimes were being committed using a toxic gas he created, has discovered that The Corporation has succeeded in developing a hybrid plague, a disease so dangerous and fast-spreading, it could wipe out humanity in just a few days.
Only The Corporation held the cure. They created "Operation: Omega": a plan to unleash this pestilence in water supplies around the globe, infecting the entire planet at a single blow. Then, they would extort billions of dollars from world governments to supply the cure! The Director found out about Caine hacking into his database and had the scientist injected with something green. Dr. Caine's body liquefied and was flushed down into sewerage. However, his skull and fist remained intact, and his new body is made of toxic goo. Swearing revenge, the doctor seeks two things: his former colleagues, and to assume his human form once again. He must now find the DNA helices scattered throughout the wasteland or else end up imprisoned in the Director's lava lamp...
The Ooze is a video game developed by Sega Technical Institute and released in 1995 for the Mega Drive/Genesis. Howard Drossin (who previously worked on music and sound for Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Spinball and Comix Zone, and later for Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal) created music and sounds, and Dave Sanner, the developer of Sonic Spinball, was the lead programmer. In the game, players take the role of a slimy puddle of liquid and face off against various enemies and obstacles.
Players control Dr. Caine as a puddle of ooze with a head, who can move around and use two attacks. One is stretching out a maneuverable sliver of ooze whose length is only limited by how much ooze he currently has to attack. Players can also spit gobs of ooze (called a "Hocker of Death" ), which reduces the size of the ooze. Enemy attacks deplete the size of the ooze puddle as well, and the Ooze will die either if he becomes very small or if his head is attacked directly. He can also die by dropping off the edges of certain areas. Numerous puzzles must be completed in order to progress from one level to another. An optional goal of the game is finding and collecting all 50 helices, in order to see the game's good ending.
This could be a great action/puzzle game if it didn't have the insane, unfair difficulty. The developers could simply add a saving feature and solve all problems, but instead, one mistake forces the player trying to get the good ending to start all over. It's so hard, the game barely lets you learn it at all. Players are supposed to touch every pixel of every level in search for hidden items, passages and levers, and to memorize all encounters in the game, because a considerable part of them are anti-intuitive deathtraps. And for what? For the good ending, you get the same two screens as the bad ending (which is also the game over screen), with a low-quality animation slapped to them at the end! Slope mechanics are poorly done, but that's just a minor complaint about the game's otherwise solid and original design. Also, a few places on Level 5 seem to be inspired by nothing more than pure sadism.
All DNA collected, all paths shown, most (maybe all) items collected, good ending shown. -

Actually, the real reason, they tried to kill him was because he was the debunking the schemes the employer were under to try and seek a way to prevent them from releasing a toxic gas that he made so that they could exploit it and the evil people running the factory know that by releasing it into the atmosphere so in which case when tons of people get sick by this virus, many innocents would have to fork up enough cash to them since they're the only ones who had possession of the cure for it so basically saying they tried to kill Dr. Caine solely because they wanted to silence him

I think it's still amazing. I assume several images were made for the edges, selected based on the surroundings. The fluid could be made of a particle system. The head would be the pivot and various squares move trying to be together around the head, but avoiding overlapping. When attacking, one of the squares becomes another pivot, like another leader, and the others follow it. But I don't know how it was implemented. It's a supposition.

The concept of this game is freaking great. I could see a new version, still top down and with perhaps an upgrade system. Even make the plot that the good Doc anticipated that the corporation would try again and made a backup of the ooze serum just in the off chance he needed to become the ooze again. The whole fluid mechanic really would look amazing and... I'd take the difficulty down a notch or two. Like, first couple levels are piss easy, but then when we get to the corporation, gotta focus on the puzzle elements lest you get dead REAL quick.
@legionbeast
@legionbeast 5 жыл бұрын
I also figure a mechanic would be to use the punch to "add ooze" to your opponents and when enough is on them, that's when they become goo and you kill them and can add them to you. Spitting does much the same, a bigger glob but it rips a chunk off your ooze body to do it. I'd also add a "corrosive" meter. By activating it, it turns all your goo into the corrosive type and you kill everything by touching it, but it doesn't last forever. You'd get it by consuming ooze and killing opponents and power up drops. Kinda like a rage instead of soley a powerup you find per chance.

Love it! There should also be a level select AND a game save feature too and a map of the stage to where you are,where the hidden DNA are located as well as the hidden test labs(bonus levels). There should also be two endings. Both of them are happy endings. One where you some succeed in somehow exposing the Corporation's exploits to the world and the Director is taken off to jail. The whole plant is decommissioned however you use it's equipment to work on finding a cure. The other ending is after you've collected all the DNA,you install them in to a machine that successfully turns you human again. The evil Director,like the first game,is the one stuck in a lava lamp. And now that you're in charge,you use the entire plant to run more clean and efficient energy and improve the experiments for the betterment of mankind instead of evil. What do you think?

Once I got the hang of it, I didnt find the game to be THAT difficult...I think the difficulty comes more from poor design in some spots; for example, its not very clear what can or cant hurt you. It is also very easy to get lost, and it's not very clear where you have to go or what your actions do. I remember flipping switches as a kid and trying to figure out what the hell it did.
@VandelayDefect
@VandelayDefect 3 жыл бұрын
It certainly wasn't very clear on what could hurt you and what couldn't unless you eyeballed the protag's reaction during play and took note of sound effects. Thankfully, back in the day it was a lot easier to see what was going on since the screen views were so much smaller and there were limits on how much could spawn (to ensure it could fucking run in the first place). Not to mention there were no maps or anything so wandering around for hours trying to get an idea of where the hell you were was definitely a factor too.

I've figured out the key to success in this game. It's your extending fist. It has a small green blob on the end which is barely visible but this is what you are aiming to hit things. pay close attention to it. To get it to go where you want is the aim but it will only travel in diagonals. So in order to hit things which you are not precisely in line with you must finesse it right at the end to hit the target be it an enemy or post to grab onto. Do a quick little circular motion. Then you will be able to hit target you are not precisely in line with on the 8 axis.

After watching this video while trying to go to sleep, I coulda sworn that the footage jumped back at certain points. Concluded it was my imagination, although upon viewing this video again today I've noticed more instances where the footage jumped back. An example of this is when it jumps back from *WASTE PLANT PART II* to the end of *TOXIC DUMP* 's boss fight at 29:07. Jumping forward to about 39:33 seems to preserve the flow of the video. This was the only one that I have found upon today's viewing as of this moment. The fact that this jump exists shows that it's possible that there are more jumps, and that it wasn't my imagination a couple of days ago.

This game was 90s death metal/deathpunk in a nutshell. Think about it- You get turned into a gelatinous monster of toxic slime by a corrupt science corporation, and you must now claim vengeance on them by devouring all that stands as you welcome their flesh and bones into the very biomass they have created.

That does beg a question though if Dr.Cane was going to expose the company then why did he not notice anything wrong in the Gentics Lab where he likely worked in and didn't see any destroyed walls and grounds with a big monster as well unless the company started killing everyone in the lab and destroying everything after the director put him through the toilet.

@@Meta_Productions Good point. I can only offer 3 feasible possibilities: 1: His eyesight was REALLY bad. After all, he did wear glasses. 🤷🏻‍♂️ 2: He possibly did know something was going on, but was threatened when he tried to dig deeper into the situation. 3: The corporation excelled at burning all evidence of what they were doing. Chances are, none of the personnel knew what was going on behind the scenes except the higher ups. I wish there was more lore to this game, because I'm sure everyone would love it. A remake would be cool.

I never understood just how to play the game. What damages you, what damages opponents, the goal of the game even. It was really difficult and I ended up just giving up on it back in the 90s. But for some reason when people would mention games from that era on that console, I would always think of it.

Such an interesting concept for a game, but at the same time, a concept that wasn’t executed that well. If the game was remade, and the overall mechanics were handled correctly, it could end up being less obscure. The difficulty is also way too high for this game. I love the soundtrack for this game, and how The Ooze himself isn’t a sprite, but is instead comprised of small bits of graphics, essentially giving the character a “graphics engine” of sorts, and adding physics to him. He also does t have a health HUD, because the goo surrounding him *is* the HUD, which I always found really cool. The game was also apparently planned to be a Nomad pack-in game, which is the logical reason why there’s next to no text in the game for directions and such. I’d love to see this game done in a really elaborate hand draw art style, as well, so, when you move around, you would see a trail of ooze behind you. Not ooze that’s a part of your actual character, but just as a nice little attention to detail, to show the fact he’s made of radioactive waste. So, my closing thoughts and opinions are: Great idea, but not so great execution. Definitely needed to be reworked and revised, and made a *lot* less difficult.
