I make a lot of meals for my husband and my dad and what I do with a make a big batch of chili spaghetti and homemade soups and put it in two cup individual containers and freeze them that way and then when I go to give them to people I pop them out of that container keep my container and put them in a ziplock baggie and write down what it is and what to cook it for and it's so easy and efficient and I've been helping a lot of older people with that over the last 25-30 years just thought I'd give you guys a little tip thank you❤

I use red sauce for - spaghetti, chili, lasagna, cover noodles for goulash, pizza, soups, cover tortellini/ ravioli etc., cover breaded eggplant or zucchini…. Luv it with hamburger n Italian sausage. Here in Germany we have hamburger mixed with pork- I add the Italian sausage to my red sauce. To make KILLER red sauce use canned tomatoes from your home grown tomatoes. AND I add tomato soup- if the sauce it too watery I’ll add the powdered tomato soup s and dried onions.

@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
Diane, since the cost varies greatly depending on the area you live, we don't share our costs anymore. When we used to, some people felt like failures themselves for not being able to get their costs as low as ours (because the cost of groceries where they live is much higher) and many were upset that we were spending too much (because where we are in Canada, the costs are higher than in many of the States) so we now try to avoid specifics about cost other than speaking in percentages.

@leahrowe8472 жыл бұрын
@@jujube2407 I use bags too. I like the natural fiber colored ones, so I can use a permanent marker to write on the bag what's inside then I tie the staps together on top, so the contents don't fall out when/if they tip over in the freezer. We also started making a list/inventory & taped it to the top of the freezer lid that tells us where stuff is inside, so we don't have to remember or spend time digging around. Because we discovered the longer your freezer is open, the more ice crystals you'll get on your food.

Since most of your meals are flat and stacked what order do you put them so that you’ll know what is what to pull a meal at a glance?
@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
Hi Theresa - great question! I guess it's up to you how you want to stack them, but since we do one protein at a time, it's normal for "all the ground beef to be at the bottom" and then "all the chicken is on top" but we still spread it around a little bit so we don't have two beef hashes on top of each other. After awhile, we get to know what they look like from the bit we can see, so it's pretty easy to dig through the stack and find what we want. Other days, we don't care in the slightest and just pick up whatever is on top. The less brain-work the better! There is a lady in our FB group (facebook.com/groups/241144882941938) who not only has it marked down on whiteboards, she collects her weeks' worth of meals and puts them in a totally different bin for easy access, plus it helps her with meal planning/groceries for the week. You can be as organized or as loosey-goosey as you want! I hope that helps!

I missed it if you said what size bags you are freezing the meals in. Is one bag enough to feed you whole family? It is hard to judge without anything to compare but it looks like you would need two bags for a meal for 7 kids and 2 adults.
@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
Hi! We use the large ziploc freeze bags (1 gallon) for the main meal and then use the medium freezer bags (1 quart) for the extras like cheese. Sharla has seven kids and two adults and typically one bag is able to feed everyone, however she admits her kids sometimes some of her eat like birds. Christie's family has two kids (12 & 14) and two adults, and typically one bag is enough for each person to eat and then there enough for leftovers for her husband to take to work the next day. That said - some recipes can "grow or shrink" as needed. If you think your family will need 6 chicken breasts instead for 3 or 4, then often times, you can do that without having to double the sauce. If you have four teenage boys all at once, then maybe you need to defrost two bags at once. You know your family best. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all. Over time, I've gotten to know which casserole will be eaten in one meal and might not have any leftovers (cough, cough, tater tot casserole) so I often prepare a side or two if I need to stretch it, or make it on a night where I know we won't have to rely on the leftovers the next day. I hope that helps!

So cool! How many servings do you think each meal contains? Or does it vary?
@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
It varies somewhat but in general, 6 servings per meal.

I eat very simple... Not sure why I keep watching these 🤔... I eat seasoned meat, and a cooked vegetable. Sometimes a lil bit of fruit as a snack... Oatmeal for breakfast. (My food addiction recovery program) 😓

I've arranged to have a friend come over and help me compile a few bags. I'm only cooking for one, so a few of these should last me quite a while.

Ladies- would you freeze the soups n sausages in freezer containers or bags ?
@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
We prefer bags because they take up less space in the freezer, but you can absolutely use other freezer safe containers.

How do you get the freezer bags to lay so flat in the freezer?
@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
We get as much air out as we possibly can and then lay them out in the freezer as we make them. We try to put the two that are the same on different shelves so that they have a bit of time to start freezing while we make the next meal.

I keep listening to the part about taco spaghetti. Are you sure you only want 8 spaghetti noodles? The million dollar stuffed shells I have a couple of hints. Thaw chopped spinach instead of chopping your own. To fill the shells or manicotti put the filling in a gallon size bag and cut off a corner and use like a piping bag. Have the shells open side up and squeeze filling in cut off with a knife and move to the next. Yes I have filled a metric butt ton of shells over the years. I also freeze in a single layer on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or wax paper. They pop off and go right into a few large bags.

Awesome tips! I used the bag trick to fill manicotti once and will remember it for the next time we do shells! And YES it's only 8 spaghetti noodles. Haha. Kidding. Whoops! Good catch. Haha
