I always find that when making any 'red' sauce frozen meals, I add a layer of plastic wrap over the item before adding the aluminum foil. Seems like there is a chemical reaction with the acid in the red (tomato) sauce and the foil. Just remove the plastic wrap before cooking. THEN, if I have fresh tomatoes in house that need to be used up, often times will add thin slices to the top before baking!
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
That is SUCH a great tip! Thank you! I've had other people ask about the aluminum foil-tomato reaction. Next time, I will add the plastic wrap in between.

It's more important to use a layer of parchment paper between the red sauce and the foil before baking. Martha Stewart makes parchment lined foil specifically so that foil doesn't come in direct contact with food 👍

If you take a pitcher and place your plastic bag in it with the edges folded over it makes it easier to pour ingredients in without having to worry the bag will tip over…I just bought inexpensive pitchers from the dollar store….. Walmart has large cans of tomato sauce and use to have paste also in large cans…. I buy large bags of frozen corn and veggies…saves on costs, taste fresh and less cans to open…. I prep meals for a professional couple and I run onions, peppers etc thru my food processor attachment. To mix hamburger for meatballs in my Kitchen Aid it’s easier on your hands.. If you have an Amish store near you the five lb. block is what I buy of cheeses and run them thru my Kitchen Aid attachment…..then I put the bags of shredded cheese in the freezer…..or I do it the day before prep and put in a cooler with ice packs.

You are awesome! I am disabled and love to cook but I like to prep meals on a not so bad pain day. I’m hopefully buying a stand alone freezer soon because my freezer is too small. Thanks for all your ideas! I can’t wait to make some. One question I have is do you put additional information on the bags such as cooking times or servings or anything else (maybe reminders of what sides you’ll need)? I also would put dates on the labels just so you can see what isn’t a fam favorite.
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
Stephanie, I'm sorry to hear about your pain. That must be so difficult. I love that you have such a positive attitude and have found ways to work around that. We add cooking times, anything that needs to be added on the day of cooking, the date, and any other notes that will help to our labels. We sometimes add serving suggestions like what side dishes go well with it.

Can you add potatoes to the corn chowder meal?? Maybe frozen or do you think they’d have to be fresh?

We stay away from potatoes when we're doing our freezer cooking as they tend to develop texture issues and/pr turn black. We always staple above the seal so no air gets into the bag from the staple holes and of course to prevent leaks when the meal is thawing. As far as freezer burn goes, it's important to get all of thee air out of the bag that you can and also to wait until items have cooled before you seal the bag and freeze. Hope that helps!

It depends on the meal (instructions for cooking are included in the recipe links found in the description box under the video). How do you stop your bags from freezing stuck together,? Mine freeze together.
@FreezerMeals1012 жыл бұрын
You can put parchment paper, cardboard, etc. in between the bags if you want. We actually don't have a problem with the bags sticking together in general, but our tricks for that are to make sure the bags are dry (if you spill sauce or something on the outside of the bag, dry it thoroughly) and to place the bags in on different shelves so that they freeze slightly before we add other bags on top. We add them in as we make the meals so by the time we're adding another bag on top, they've had a tiny time to start freezing. Hope that helps!
@rox33983 жыл бұрын
When you staple the bags together is there any leakage before freezing/after thawing? Especially for freezer meals that are more on the liquid-y side. I am curious about this because stapling is creating little holes in the bag.

It's important to staple above the seal. That way, there are no holes in the bag.

Welcome! If you're completely new to freezer meals, then I suggest that you start with doubling each of your dinners for a week. Eat one that night and freeze the other for later. At the end of the week, you'll have another week of meals ready to go and it will hardly take any extra time because you're just doubling your recipes. The cost really depends on the size of your family, where you live, and which recipes you choose (some proteins are way more expensive than others), but it saves so much money in the long run because you can buy things in bulk when they are on sale, food doesn't go to waste in your fridge because you intended to make certain meals but ran out of time, and you won't spend on fast food or packaged convenience foods because dinner is already made on those busy days. We do our mega freezer meal marathons (like this one) every three months. In between, I make breakfast, lunch, and snack freezer stuff. Hope that helps!

Regarding the beef hash....couldn't you put the cheese baggie inside the bigger baggie, so it wouldn't be possibly having the staple let go?

If you prefer to do that, you absolutely can!

They have bigger than gallon si?e bags. I think 2 gallon. I put the main in a gallon the put the toppings in quarts. Then put all in a 2 gallon bag. No need to worry about not having all that you need. I also sharpie any broth I may need once putting in to cook so no oops mistakes of it gone.

How does the door behind you work, why exactly is the handle in the middle of a hinged door...
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
It's strange, but all our cupboard doors have the handle right in the middle. We don't love it, but there are a lot of cupboards, so we've never gotten around to changing it.

This is fabulous!! Thanks for sharing your adventure 😉 Do you have any organizing tips for all those flat freezer bags? Do you group them or anything so it’s easier to find what you want? I have some bins I use so mine are upright and I can flip through them like cards but it’s not as efficient space wise
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
Some people group theirs according to cooking method (ie: all the Crock Pot meals together, all the oven meals together, etc.) or others group based on protein (so all the chicken meals together, etc.), but I like to place mine more randomly because then I find I get more variety in a week. I have a pretty good idea based on the colour and look of the bag which is which, so sometimes if I need a slow cooker meal because I'll be out at appointments most of the day, I pull one of those in the morning, but in general, I just work my way down one of the stacks and that gives us a nice variety. Sometimes I take a look at what's near the top of the stacks and make a meal plan for the week so that I know if I'll need to grocery shop for side dishes, but usually, I just pick based on what I'm feeling like eating that day!

When you wanna cook it do u just take it out to defrost then cook or do u just straight up cook it on the stove?
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
Some of the recipes are for the crock pot, some for the oven, some for the skillet, and some can even be cooked on the BBQ. Most of them need to be thawed before cooking, but if you forget to take a meal out in the morning, placing the bag in a sink of room temperature water for half an hour will thaw it.

Wow...so amazing! I often make freezer meals as gifts for several friends... eggroll in a bowl... how well does slaw mix freeze? Is is super wet upon thawing?
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
The slaw mix holds up well in this dish. Once it's cooked in the skillet, it's got the same texture it would if you made egg roll in a bowl fresh.

So how much does 150 freezer meals cost? Does it save money or just time?
@FreezerMeals1013 жыл бұрын
Freezer cooking (especially doing many meals at once) saves a lot of money. Some of the ways it saves money include buying in bulk, buying by the case lot, having nothing go to waste (like when you buy produce with the intention of using it but eventually have to throw it away because your meal plans didn’t go as planned!), and never needing to buy expensive convenience items or having to pick up take out because dinner is already made. We also plan our recipes around what’s on sale, so that saves even more money. The actual cost varies because the cost of groceries are so variable depending on where you live. We are in Canada where grocery prices are higher than the United States and where there are stricter coupon laws so although we still save a lot of $ cooking this way, we could save more if we lived in certain areas in the States (but even there, costs vary greatly from place to place).

have you all tried Penzey's spices? I only buy the curry powders. I buy a mild and a spicy and mix them. I love it. And that way I don't have to buy jars of pre-made curry paste. :) Costs a bit up front, but you only use 1-2 Tbsp depending on how spicy you want it. :) (now I haven't done a cost breakdown on it...I just like the flavor.) day two: ok wait. that looks like custom fabric. did you make that hoodie/pullover too? that does not look like store bought.

The one we like best is from WalMart. It's just their generic "Great Value" brand. This time, we used Western Family brand General Tao sauce in place of that.
