The best part was that the combo had inherent protection from Effect Veiler: all you had to do was discard a card to bring back a GY Fishborg before summoning SDKC, as SDKC has the effect of negating targets by sac'ing a fish.

Coelacanth is such a good card. I'm surprised people don't abuse the Fish engine more in the Master Rule 5 Era since Oyster Meister's effect isn't once per turn. You can spam xyz and AA Zeus sends Oyster Meister to the grave so you can get 2 or 3 tokens then, you can use the tokens for link summons.

I think GX and especially 5DS was the height of Yugioh. Late DM and early GX had a few cards that were just a little too dominant. Cards that were pretty much mandatory in every single deck. Also early GX decks are the most boring to me as they usually don't really have any kind of real strategy. They are just a bunch of individually good cards thrown together.

One of my first purchases when I started the game was a Red Dragon Archfiend tin, from which I pulled Coelacanth, and since then I decided someday I would make a good fish deck. When the first fish tuner came later to the TCG it started, and I played and improved the deck for years. My most memorable version used TG Librarian to syncrho a lot, summon two Shooting Quasar Dragon (was not out in tcg yet so I only built this in Dueling Network) and drew my entire deck and finished with an Exodia win. I remember that was the only time a banlist hit more than a couple of my cards, and since then Fishborg never came back.

Edit: HOLY SHIT, THAT'S LITERALLY MY DECKLIST at the 8-minute mark!! I'd love to go over what went into building that deck if you're interested! God, I love to reminisce! Hi, long-time Water Deck player, here. I went to the Phantom Darkness Sneak Peek event and pulled SDKC from one of my packs. At the time, when I first read his effect, I said "You're not good now, but give it time, and I'll bet you'll be great". I went on to run Fish for years and this is what it got me: a three-month winning streak at locals (sep-nov 2010), 2 National Championship invites, a regional top-8 and a top 1000 mat. The Nationals invites were to the 2011 Nationals held in my backyard in Pittsburgh where I ran the Trish Loop FTK, and went 4-3 before eventually dropping. One of the best days of my life at that point. So many great memories running Fish; thank you so much for this video! Speaking of which, I'm surprised you didn't go over the Trish Loop FTK: the deck was able to summon Trish 5 times on the first turn, and was able to set up the field with Formula Synchron to rip the card the opponent drew on the next turn. It was horrible, degenerate, and worked often enough for me to run it at nats that year, lol. I figured if plants were able to set up a field of 5 monsters, 5 cards set backrow and 5 cards in hand after THEIR first turn, I should be able to do the opposite: destroy everything on their side on the first turn. Another OTK: Scrap Archfiend, SDKC, and Mist Wurm combined to make 8000 damage with built-in field clearing. Used by bringing out 2 Royal Swamp Eels, 1 Oyster, and 1 level 4 fish.

What I find so funny is that while I was running this deck, (the one at the 8-minute mark) I always thought of its defenses as "bend, but don't break", despite running more traps than my contemporaries at the time. I suppose it's because I always used Fish Depth Charge and Water Art as ways to pick off threats that would get in the way of the combo; I favored getting rid of backrow with Depth Charge, and the same goes for Water Art, except I could hit things like Veiler, Gorz, and Fader as well. Oyster plus those two set backrow meant I was disposing of at least two threats if I went first, in addition to being able to look at my opponent's hand to see what else could possibly get thrown in my face. I ran Caius for similar reasons: I already had this frog engine, and Caius was just strong enough to warrant the use of things like Bottomless or Torrential such that they used it BEFORE I got the combo off. Most monsters didn't post a threat, so I'd just let them attack; so long as I had life points, I had ways of otk-ing, and leaving a monster on the field actually helped me, since the Colossal Arms OTK needed a monster with at least 1900 atk, which was common. It was definitely more control-oriented than the other otk-builds at the time, but I had always been more of a control player, anyway. Only now, I had ways of sneaking in game-point damage at any time.

Fish OTK was coming together right around the time I stopped playing and would have been right up my alley. I had played a casual Legendary Ocean deck for years leading up to then and could see the applications a lot of the then-new cards could have, but there was one big thing that killed the deck for me. I'm a sucker for themeing. I really, really wanted boss monsters that fit my deck. And therefore, using Fish and Aqua monsters to summon mostly Dragons and Warriors was a no from me. I could have made an exception for the Ice Barrier synchros maybe and probably reluctantly played Gorz and LaDD , but the ubiquity of goodstuff extra decks with the Signer dragons and the almost complete lack of on-theme options, let alone GOOD ones, was a big part of why I drifted away from the game.

It was a 3 step OTK that you would pull of in one turn by using Superancient Deepsea King Coelacanth. First you had to draw the entire deck. Then you had to loop synchros to get 3 dewloren in the graveyard that you looped with symbol of heritage. Ultimataly the third step was to loop Trishhula to banish their entire board and hand from play. BTW are you also the owner of that youtube channel for one piece? This is so funny to look back on. Konami back then: We don't like the message this OTK has of you're screwed if you go into your boss monster. Konami international later on after the split: Here's an archetype dedicated to dealing with monsters that are based on stuff from Japanese media like Kaiju films and Ultraman.

Back when summoning a bunch of monsters and using a bunch of monster effects in one turn was actually impressive and cool

I am proud you learned how to pronounce "coelacanth" The dino kid in me cringed in pain every time you called it "koo-ala-kint" on stream

I was just playing against that card on Tag Force 6 that fish card was powerful but I beat it with a Clear World Attribute Chaos Sorcerer deck.

So much nostalgia. This era was when I finally had my own money to spend on yugioh and could actually build. There was so much diversity and creativity in the meta. I remember when Plant Synchro got nerfed, but then we all just bounced back by making Chaos Plant Synchro lol.

Not only did I enjoy it, I wish it never ended.

It was a shame they hit it. I liked it and ran it and Six Sams. Fishys were my second deck. Even after they hit the Colossal Arm combo [and Mega is absolutely right; Komoney HATED that combo] I saw some decent success with it in locals. Winning a few times even. It still could spam out massive amounts of synchros that were hard to kill. And it was one of only a few decks that could constantly make Mist Wurm AND Trishula. Mean.

MBT made a return look at this deck like 6 months ago i believe. It still works pretty well with the new fish support that has come out. It also is no longer just an FTK but also a semi grindy deck with ways to search almost anything in itself.
Wait, this sounds like you could still use that card in a Shark Swarm deck. Like the deck I run, it could at least be a one off use to get more monsters for xyz summoning on.
