How about: The Potential of Ruins Dummy And Their Portrayal in Fan Works? They may be seen as a joke character, (with commentary on how characters in other games are sometimes nonentities and you can have an illusion of a choice) but as with Napstablook rising from the status of test monster and Maddie's importance in the console ports, there is much that could be done with them. I myself have used the little we know of them to write several speculative roleplay versions of them, including one inspired by Storyshift's version of them- and I have grown rather fond of them through that.
@Dorked2 жыл бұрын
@@beril6248 Yeah, Ruins Dummy is a curious case where they're almost a non-character who is only confirmed to exist for a joke. We have very little to go off of their characterization beyond tiring of aimless shenanigans and what Mew Mew tells us before her dummy fight. Even Inverted Fate kinda had to guess a lot, with them being very quiet and a lot less proactive than their cousins.

@@Dorked I liked their characterization in Inverted Fate- it was sweet, with a good message about trying things out but ultimately being yourself. I can relate to that, as I tried on an edgy character in my youth, and then organically came to understand that I'd prefer being "cozy" and quietly accepted rather than someone on the fringes, doing things for attention. Also, that passiveness is somewhat interesting as it puts them on the scale of the ghost family where Mettaton and Mad Mew Mew are more proactive and Napstablook and the ghost in the dummy seem to prefer to stay where they are. I've been experimenting with ways my "takes" on ruins dummy communicate and interact in their settings- from the nonverbal one who speaks through letter cards, penned letters, and then airtext ala Mad Dummy's intro when they feel they need to speak up in a highstakes situation- to the one who speaks only in ghost form and playfully uses their air text to emote while inhabiting their dummy. And then there was the one that communicated verbally, even arguing with their cousin when she annoyed them, but who was more vulnerable and sensitive in quiet moments. My current variation on Ruins Dummy is quiet and prefers to pretend to just be a dummy/onlooker even in stressful situations (ex: the "looks like it's about to fall over" UT text), but has too much curiosity (and wish to ponder philosophy) to stay put when circumstances they happen to witness really get interesting.

Honestly I'm just really glad Toby took his subtle trans allegory that was the ghosts wanting their preferred bodies, and Mettaton's backstory, and finally allowed us to see the whole process in a much more personal manner, down to the detail of Mad Mew Mew using she/her pronouns, unlike when she was the Mad Dummy and still used they/them pronouns. Awesome way to show people just what it means to them to transition.

Yeah, I think it's also just really interesting how with ghosts, they start out as genderless and then may choose to seek out more gendered bodies, with the dummies seeming to be like the. Okay this is somewhat completely unrelated but I have kind of come to a something of realization recently regarding general personalities of four ghosts characters that we are aware of: They fall into the "Four Humours" chart rather well, with everything that we know if, even with Mew Mew's expanded character. Mettaton is sanguine, constgantly presenting positive and active outlook. Mew Mew is choleric, even after growing more comfortable, remains extremely impulsive and prone to angry-seeming outbursts. Napstablook is melancholic, this one needs little explanation. And the Training Dummy, the one that Mew Mew tries to defend during the original Mad Dummy fight... Well, with what little we know of them, we know that they are extremely passive and not too interactive. I think they might fall into phlegmatic category. This might be me overthinking things, especially with assigning Training Dummy a personality without them really ever 'properly' interacting with us. But I do think that this fits too well with remaining ghosts and with Deltarune's developments, we might learn even more about both Mew Mew and Mettaton, particularly what their personalities were like prior to finding of the bodies.

Sure she's still mad but she seems way more happier now than ever when we saw her as the mad dummy. i like though how Nabsta is contempt enough in their own body. not everyone wants to change and that's fine. nice that we saw 3 variations of ghosts turning out to be 3 different identities in the end. I think a lot of people relate and appreciate Mettaton and Mew Mew for helping them with transitioning and such, but I never fell in the same camp as them. With the inclusion of Ralsei though, I felt I understood how to comfortable in my own skin, to keep my pronouns but allow myself to as feminine as I want to be and to not care about fearfully balancing my feminity and masculinity. You realize that probably wasn't the intent or meaning, right?
@Dorked2 жыл бұрын
@@inciniumz4671 I don't see why it wouldn't be the meaning. It's really explicitly trans. She sees the Mew Mew body, immediately clicks with it, and her dialogue has a lot about her talking about how comfortable and happy she is in her new body after the battle. Both MTT and Mew Mew go from genderless pronouns as ghosts to male for MTT and female for Mew Mew. Nonbinary to binary gender is still a transition. It's allegorical, but it is still a form of coding, and in a game that has bisexual characters like Alphys (and Mew Mew as of Deltarune), multiple characters who use only they/them (including Kris), and at least two queer ships in the form of Alphyne and 01 and 02, I don't see why transness is that unreasonable.
@inciniumz46712 жыл бұрын
@@Dorked But here's something to think about: if the body is what defines the gender of the character, that's either trans or just superficial. My theory given this is that the ghosts don't hold a gender, they're apparently asexual being. But they have personalities and preferences, so conceivably Mad Ghost doesn't have a true statsus as male or female until she inhabits the Mew Mew doll, a female character. And personally, don't be offneded by this, but going from nonbinary to binary isn't trans, because you still have a biological gender, you just decide not to asscoiciate with it until perhaps you go bacl to binary. Now if said person was born male but transitions to female with NB inbetween THEN it would be, but in honesty I don't understand this stuff and try not to get into it so I could very well be wrong. And yeah, the Alphyne story and (maybe?) 01 and 02 are referring to homosexuality, but for Kris, it could be said that he's always called they ingame is so it's easier for the player to fit into the character. (Kinda why I call Kris "he", you get me?) Given what you've said I have a new perspective on this. I still think it's not proven that Mad Ghost is some sort of trans allegory but I understand why you gusy think that way and respect that. Actually, you could also say Mad Ghost's character is up for interpretation, if you think about it! Like I said (but less aggressively) sometimes it's about the lens through which you view characters in any Tpby Fox game, so ultimately it's something up for intrepretation in my opinion, that doesn't mean you all can't see Mad Ghost this way, it just means different people will see and interpret her in different ways. Thanks Dorked!

The original Undertale was written from like 2011 to 2015, when discourse around trans (especially non-binary) people was still much worse than it is today, but Toby did a great job with progressive language and (in my opinion) made an appreciable difference. That said, I think all ghost monsters are meant to be completely genderless (hence they/them pronouns), but subsequently conform to a binary gender as seen with Mad Mew Mew and Mettaton. Like you said, I think they/them pronouns in the original Undertale implies that a character's gender is interpretive. I only say that because the game released in 2015 and that seems to be prevailing opinion at the time. In Deltarune though, I think they/them is explicitly meant to imply non-binary, especially for Kris. I feel like this is supported by how clear and well-written Mad Mew Mew is that Toby himself learned a lot from friends and fandom in the three years between Undertale and the Switch port/Deltarune.
@Dorked2 жыл бұрын
I think with Napstablook, at least, it's not interpretive because they've consistently been referred to as they, and even when the artbook messed up, it was later fixed. Frisk and Chara are a lot more divisive, tho, and while I personally see them as nonbinary, the lack of clarity definitely means people will always be debating it. I sorta see it as ghosts being assigned NB at birth and that changing if they bond with certain vessels (with dummies being a NB option). I do think Mew Mew is a really nuanced and respectful take, tho! Very glad she exists.

As I'm not transfem, I can't really judge anything about mew mew but I can talk about Mettaton. Mettaton being trans is honestly one of the best things in undertale to me. Many people, including trans people, have had exclusionary opinions like "You need to pass to be trans, you need to act manly or you're just doing it for attention", and that made many trans mascs afraid of trying fem clothes or makeup, but mettaton's not afraid to be fabulous and express himself outside the gender binary. Mettaton is like, a trans drag queen in my perspective. He wears dresses, he loves pink, he calls people darling and dear, and that doesn't make him any less masculine. He's just doing what makes him happy and he loves himself for it. Undertale was released in 2015, and raised so many great conversations about just not giving a shit about gender. It's so sad that, after 8 years, we're still seeing so many transphobia online and INSIDE the fandom, despite undertale's great success...

Maddie(the nickname that I have seen used for Mad Mew Mew on the internet by a few people, so I will do the same) is a very important character to me, as she is a very emotional wlw(she states that she has a crush on Undyne during her fight) trans girl like I am. I know that there are other queer and trans characters in Undertale(they make up most of the cast and even the protagonist), but for some reason representation in media for me hits harder the more I can relate to the character. Canon characters like Maddie(Undertale), Madeline(Celeste), and characters that I personally headcanon as queer and trans are very important to me, as they all give me validation for who I am. It's why I think representation of all kinds of people is so important, because if latching onto characters that I can see myself in helps me, then it must be true for other people that have their own set of characters to latch onto. I consider the Switch version of Undertale to be the definitive edition just for Maddie, because I love her that much.

Seeing her transitioning just as I did made me incredibly happy. The character I most identified as had transitioned almost at the same time, and taking similar steps. I really appreciate that Toby is supportive of trans and gay people, most game developers don't even try to make their games contain such themes, to the point quite a few game companies do whatever they can to censor that sort of content in games they have made, together or not. Out of fear of how the public will react. If the Japanese releases of games has that sort content somewhere in there, it's almost always censored. Toby is brave enough to not be afraid to keep gay and trans content in his games, regardless of the region. He's much braver than even Nintendo, who fears keeping such content in games they publish. Seriously, Toby has had gay and lesbian characters in his games. The two large guards in Undertale (the guards my trans brother refers to them as "the gay guards", also, fyi, my trans brother is fine with being outed about that), and Undyne and Alphys in Undertale, and Noelle and Susie in Deltarune, are clear signs Toby is supportive of trans and gay/lesbian people. Something nearly every game developer fears to include or keep in their localized games.

Thought it was nice that Mew and Metatton needing to get maintenance for their ideal bodies could reference Testosterone or Estrogen shots. I love Mew a lot and one of my favorite bits is (like you said) retaining her personality and quirks. Taking that leap to change is terrifying. Even if the alternative of staying is worse, it's natural to be hesitant. When I was learning ways to better cope with my mental health I was afraid of losing who I was up till that point. Who was I if not this? Then when I got the help I needed and began to improve, I actually grew as a person. Who I was is still here, just bigger, better, and happier. Things were still rough but just having the stability in myself was enough to give me the courage to continue. Mew stays loud, eccentric, and passionate. I stayed creative, observant, and passionate. What changed was how we expressed what we are and how to do it in a constructive and healthy way. It's growth that's more relatable than most character arcs I had back then and really motivated me to keep going even if I felt afraid.

I'm wondering if the idea of becoming a "dummy" is a sort of metaphor for conformation. Mettaton's Diary Entries presumably elude to Mad Dummy/Mew Mew going to get her dummy body, and with how it seems to be the common object that happens to be possessed (see in the New Home speech during Neutral/Pacifist), it makes me wonder if in a way, there could be a connection. Mettaton, Mad Dummy/Mew Mew, and Napstablook all represent different ideas of breaking out of it in a way. Napstablook represented total rejection of conformation and comfort of living outside the binary. Mettaton and Mad Mew Mew presented rejection of conformation in respect of what was expected of them, through two different ways. Mettaton always knowing that he wanted to have the more fitting body, and therefore always having rejected the idea of being a dummy, and Mad Mew Mew discovering her perfect body after she had attempted to go for the path of conformation and finding she couldn't have peace with it.

One thing I think is interesting to think about is the idea that Mad Dummy hearing about the fact that emotional surges equal fusing with a body, and knowing she has anger issues in the first place, tries to... *force* the anger out, which results in her coming up with whatever she ends up saying before she fights Frisk the first time, extrapolating what little she's heard from this unnamed cousin and trying to get absurdly mad about it, but it's not wholly genuine anger. ...Which is why, when she has a genuine reason to be so absurdly angry (when Frisk has murdered everyone in their path) she *does* fuse.

you know i find it wild that a ghost possessing a catgirl doll from almost 4 years ago, is the thing that got me to first question my gender to this day i am still unsure of my own self and it can all be traced to this one funky little trans cat who was already one of my favourite characters from one of my favourite games of all time

2:38 Oh yeah I almost forgot about that, one of the coolest musical details about Dummy! is how in its remixing it repeats parts of Ghost fight in a similar style to her speech quirk it's so cute. 5:25 Also Imma be honest I thought Mew Mew was saying Undyne replaced her with a new training dummy, implying she never knew her original one was possessed. This crush and her realizing Alphys and Undyne got together makes a bit more sense. xD 13:16 Ooooh I never got to see this art, MTT and Mew Mew dancing is adorable!

I'm kinda surprised Toby wasn't able to patch in the Mad Mew Mew fight into the PC version. I know it was intended to use the switch Joycons independently, but on PC the fight's unique mechanics could be implemented by mapping the left side to WASD and the right to the arrow keys.
@Holy-Tiramisu2 ай бұрын
yes but i think the point was that it was a switch exclusive. he could have put it in the pc version but it kinda defeat the purpose

One small theory i personally have about the ghosts is, that they simply have no gender and the gender they have will mostly depend on what they posses and how they percieve it. Or its the other way around that they'd rather choose something that resembles their prefered gender.

@Brydav_Massbear11 ай бұрын
What is funny to me is that it took me so long to realize the ghost possession was an allegory of transgendering, as I only realized when I learned the Mad One became a girl even though I thought they were a boy beforehand. And the opposite applies to Mettaton who I thought was a girl.

I played the switch version as soon as I could cause when I saw that epic anime like intro of the trailer I just had to se what this new character was and I instantly fell in love! the style of the doll is so cute and I wish the anime was real lol. the fact that she finally has a real future gives me tingles. I like the possibility of being Mettaton's cousin (meaning Napstablook as well) and I just can't believe so many people are throwing away such a character when they did not look at her story, (to be fair, she is a side character) much like the guards she has a story that everyone can see and I love that we get to explore it a little further on the switch
@Dorked2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Only downside is since her full arc is split across two console ports and the alarm clock app, it's not very centralized, but I suppose that does give people a reason to keep checking out newer releases.

To me There is 1 thing that matters about it THE FACT THAT THE BATTLE BREAKS WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT SOUL COLOURS BY MAKING A HALF BLUE HALF RED SOUL THAT CAN SPLIT IN HALF WITHOUT GETTING DESTROYED JUST CAUSE SWITCH JOYCONS

I absolutely love this character, it's me fr fr xD but seriously, it's a nice reminder that I don't have to prove to people that I am a female by acting feminine, rather that I can be myself and still be who I perceive myself to be

Hey dorked just want to exclaim how much of a fan I am of not just your work but you in general. I love your videos, If, and in general In a very unsafe community a lot of times you really stand out as someone who’s a safe space. I really enjoyed your talk about the transgender meta commentary in undertale, it was such an under explored topic in my opinion and just makes me all the more happy you’re talking abt it.
@Dorked2 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks! It's really unfortunate that some people act like representation and shit is "cringy" or whatever when like... most of the people who complain about that stuff are not part of the groups that are excited for representation and don't understand how much it hurts to be unseen in media. Thankfully most of my comments here have been positive, but there have definitely been some bad faith and transphobic comments.
@treythetrusting49542 жыл бұрын
@@Dorked Aw wow I’m sorry about that, as someone who’s bi (like actually) it really sucks that a lot of ppl tend to either pander and give lip service to lgbt and also ppl who join for attention really kind of made me connect with what you’re saying here. Stay (no reference intended) determined in your stuff because I feel like undertale does lgbt representation in a way that frankly I’ve never seen another piece of media do. It’s not in big bold ways where it’s like “X character is gay” it’s more just treated like normal with undyne and alphys for example, and with mad dummy/mew mew Toby Fox and his team did something truly astounding, they made a story arc about transgenderism without making the transgenderism the whole character. There’s a ton of unique things about mad dummy/mew mew that are unique to her that aren’t just that she is trying to transition. So yeah I feel like it was the right thing totally to make this video.

I've only seen the PC version of Undertale so I wasn't sure if Mad Mew Mew knew her body was an anime character or not until I watched this video. Not only does she know, she considers herself "canon" Mew Mew (Now that I think of it, she either had to have been named or choose her name, so she had to have known where the name came from)
@Dorked2 жыл бұрын
I love that she's just up and declared herself canon. Good for her! It's such a bold statement, but I appreciate how she just runs with it.
