I understand why Worthy might be someone’s least favorite song, it can definitely feel a little simple. But it ended up being one of my favorites on the album because I listened to it for the first time at the gym. Having that mantra in my head in a place where I can feel really insecure if I’m not careful was truly powerful.

I think the album is ok, has good stuff here and there, Love the japanese -inspired songs, I do really like Spin and some of her ode to Texan Rappers, some features are weak, some production needs work or is questionable, but I did enjoy this. I think she needs some more variety with her sound to truly pop, but I am happy for her. She's really killing it honestly.

I think Meg is still moving into her own. She has the makings of an artist that will be here for a long time, so I'm excited to reflect on this album in several years and see how far she's come. Yes she's been in this game for a hot minute but from the POV of her LIFE (not the career but her as a woman in her late 20s) she is still growing, and this album is reflecting that a lot. Not my fav Megan work but she's coming out of an extremely challenging part of her life, and that's been such a theme in her works that it must be considered, and this part of her life/career seems to be lower key, recovering, talking her shit, etc. Traumazine is the midst of the chaos, Megan is the "calm" after the storm, and just cus I prefer the latter doesn't mean she doesn't have it in her for another massive banger. Good points, Anthony!

He mentioned this briefly towards the end of the review that he hadn’t seen much artistic growth within Megan in the last five years and that kind of sums up my thoughts on the album perfectly : a lot more of the same. Kind of shocked that Fantano recognizes there's little growth but still rates this project pretty highly. Most of his criticisms of the album are issues Megan has had since her debut. An inability to switch up flow/delivery, bad production choices, and poorly written choruses. Some of these criticisms directly mirror issues he had with her last release, even down to the failed attempt at pop rap.

Drives me crazy how far one has to scroll to get to actual discussions of the album being reviewed…sigh I really like Megan and think she’s a good rapper but I feel she’s suffering the same issue as Taylor. It’s great to have a favorite collaborator but I also think it helps diversify your sound when you work with other people. (I think Billie and Finneas is an interesting exception here.) Beyoncé gets a lot of criticism often for collaborating with so many people BUT it also gives her catalogue such exciting diversity. I’d love to see Megan take a cue and do the same. She even mentioned in a recent interview how much she’d love to work with Finneas. I hope it happens!

Not everyone needs to make big stepper kind of albums, but storytelling is what makes rap so beautiful. When I think of the oft-cited greats, they typically span time, location, and style. What they all usually have in common is fantastic storytelling. We’ve lost this in a lot of popular rap, and Megan isn’t much of an exception.

I appreciated this review and I agree I was hoping for more vulnerability throughout this album in the style of Moody Girl. I’ve always seen Megan as attempting to showcase different sides of herself with different sounds and production choices so I’m glad you noted that here. I will push back as someone from Northwest Louisiana about the production on Paper Together and Broke His Heart. I loved the PT production and feel like it captured that slowed down Texas style very well. Also the BHS bounce sample in the background was the best part of the song for me, even if content wise it didn’t quite hit. I also agree about BAS being a mismatch but I did enjoy the Teena Marie sample here and the fact that she got these lyrics while using Out on a Limb is objectively hilarious. Overall I agree with your review but I think the sample choices and regional production styles will mean different things to different people.

i think this was a fair review, i was honestly nervous about how this album would be received bc of everything you laid out here about where she is in her career. as a weeaboo i have a hard time getting through otaku hot girl bc i still feel the burn of embarrassment of my teenage years as a nerd but maybe after i heal more spiritually i can appreciate megan owning it. oh also on first listen i disliked Mamushi the most bc of what you said here but eventually i was seduced and now it's one of my favs. so basically just don't listen to it if you want to keep disliking it.
