Context: During my teen years, when Taylor Swift was first gaining popularity, I was part of the "Taylor Swift is for girls, cringe" camp (I'm a straight cis male, I'm like 14 at this point) and I automatically assumed that her music was garbage because of how popular it was. This changed in 2020, when "Welcome to New York" just queued up on my Spotify without me knowing and having just moved countries at the time, that song really connected with me. That's when I became a fan of hers, and in a rare instance, I became a fan of hers organically through her music. With that out of the way, I'm very conflicted about being a Swiftie. On the one hand, a lot of her music really resonates with me at a personal level. On the other, I don't think she's immortal or bulletproof. I did not like Midnights. I did not like Tortured Poets Department. The way she released multiple version of an album or song just to put out another vinyl or get more streams feels unnecessary and manipulative of her audience. Yet I think that albums like Red, 1989 and Speak Now will be played decades from now. It just feels like conversation around Taylor Swift at the moment is just about identity politics more than anything. There are the extreme fans of hers who will defend a billionaire while claiming to support all these righteous causes. There is a section of society who views anyone who likes Taylor Swift's music as lame or dumb or in some cases, corporate capitalist fascists. Can't it just be that music is subjective? Her music is more influential than almost anyone else and that makes it a different conversation, of course, but I don't really think this conversation is about music anymore. It feels like we're past "if you like it, listen to it and if you don't, don't" and that just feels wrong to me.

The people who criticize her are jealous. Dave Grohl stumbled into this recently very strangely because he praised her on a personal level in the past.. Eddy Vedder sounds very weird on some tracks where it is not apparent if the band wants the lyrics to be heard. There is something truly exceptional about Taylor. Last year I respected her, but didn't listen. This year, I would gladly march into battle for her. The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. said “If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.". Sorry to take it to such an extreme, I am trying to illustrate the power of her candidly.

It's been 15 years since Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift at the VMAs. In that time her popularity somehow increased - in most music careers since the 60's a singer or group will have been discovered, peaked, and transitioned to touring on nostalgia in that time frame. She has switched genres successfully and only gained more fans.

Uh I am a metal head like TO THE CORE. But come on. Taylor has been one of the most popular artists since like 2006 and her popularity and accolades have only grown. The idea that people, regardless of whether you enjoy her music or not, are still claiming or arguing about her "staying power" are just being ridiculous. Again, you dont have to enjoy her or her music. But if you are still calling her a "flavor of the month" youre letting your personal music taste dictate your intelligence level. Shes talented, a great business woman and artist. And shes made music history a thousand times over at this point, to the point where her place in music history as one of the top artists of our generation is already cemented in. Shes up there with Elton John, Elvis ect ect ect. She could quit making music tomorrow and disappear forever and that would still be the case.

Taylor has been writing songs about girlhood and womanhood that I'm sure girls in the future are still going to relate to, which is why girls of all ages listen to her music. She is multigenerational. My mom showed me her when I was 16. Then I grew up with Taylor.'s music....Now my kids LOVE Taylor whilst my mom and I STILL enjoy her like we were their age still.. I am not sure how you could secure more "staying power" than that? Her first album debut in 2006. It's 2024 and she is 34 years old with the highest grossing tour of all time. Never has happened and probably won't again. I am not sure what the argument is at this point...how are people still denying her talent (I dont care if you like her music/talent or you think she deserves success-its literally irrelevant). I think part of the problem might be that people don't know her like before she was "mega famous" or even after the reputation era happened. She comes across now like this machine, but if you knew her before OR take the time to figure her out you would know how insanely untrue that is. For example, for every album release she invited fans to her homes in different cities. Home baked them cookies with her family and surprised them with an album listening party, took pictures with all of them, and made genuine connections. She did that all the way up until the fans ruined that/pandemic. She has done things like this since 2007...She has done so much with her community over the years, even when she had to pull away from that, the north remembers. I can totally see how if you don't get it, or you weren't around then its probably very annoying...although I often ask myself if people are so annoyed by Taylor Swift why do they keep engaging or creating content around her ( like this video and all the daily hate tweets about her that go viral, etc)?? $$$$$$$$$$$

If you think that the beatles' work is merely generic pop akin to taylor swift's work i urge you to actually listen to them because to call them merely pop is not only wrong but exceedingly ignorant and clearly the kind of opinion posited by those that have only given their work a cursory appraisal. The beatles' early work can definitely be categorised as more pop-esque but as they grew and developed as a band into the mid and late 60's pop was only one of arguably hundreds of different genres they experimented with. They certainly experimented with more with different genre's than michael jackson ever did, and i say that as a fan of his.

I’m not a Taylor Swift fan at all, but to think she doesn’t have staying power is just patently false. Her first album came out almost 20 years ago and she’s only been getting more popular, without ever going on a hiatus. That’s a consistent track record and itself indicative of staying power. For an artist to be able to perform songs from 18 years ago AND their newest stuff and have fans get equally hyped for both is honestly quite rare.

Taylor Swift has already demonstrated staying power. Her first album release was 2006 and she has had increasing success for the last 18 years. She’s only 34 years old and might well be recording and performing 30+ years from now. And she has developed a cult-like following of young, dedicated followers. I think she will be influential for a long time.

Tbh I think an awful lot of the "nobody will listen to Taylor Swift in 20 years" comments are just wishful thinking from people who hope they won't have to still hear these in 20 years. Tbh it's an impossible thing to predict, and there's no objective criteria for it. Whatever classic rock or pop song or musician you want to think of that everyone still knows now, when it was new there was definitely not a consensus that this would be music that would last through generations. I remember one of my dads friends telling me that he felt sick seeing the queues on an album release date for this shitty manufactured pop band called ABBA, but we all still know Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia. You really only need 4 or 5 songs to stick around to become one of those lasting acts. The reality is that Taylor Swift fans are going to have kids and probably play her music for them, and their kids are probably going to grow up with fond memories of Love Story, or We Are Never Getting Back Together too. Same as I grew up liking ABBA, or Madonna, or David Bowie, or Cat Stevens, or Queen, or whatever else stuff my parents liked to play when I was a kid. If it just comes down to you personally disliking the music, then that's a pretty bad yardstick for cultural staying power. You need to realise that there are literally millions of people who think it's amazing and will listen to it on repeat for years. Or put it another way, what artist or songs do you think are mid or just plain bad, but WILL have a lot of staying power and will be still getting played in 20 or 30 years by people who weren't there at the time?

Taylor has already passed the test of time. I remember circa 2008 driving around with my then GF and she was obsessed with Fearless and we were going places blasting Love Story and You Belong With Me. Haven’t spoken to her since we split in 2009, but I’d bet dollars to donuts she’s still a fan. I got sold on her with Folklore and Evermore and grew to like the older stuff (including Fearless) and it hit me when I went to the Eras tour here and she was doing the old stuff and thinking back to that ex. If we’d had a kid they’d be one of the high schoolers in that crowd. We aren’t even 40 yet, and she’s been a huge deal so long that fans that were 20 when she hit it big are producing the next generation of fans, and it’s hard to imagine today’s college aged girls having kids won’t be seeing Taylor with their kids when they’re 15.

I mean you can see footage of her crowds or just people going to the shows if she's playing in your city. My wife is an OG fan and I took her to see the movie version for her birthday last year because she couldn't get tickets to the show, and like 30% of the audience were girls under 12 years old who were going wild for it, including the stuff that was released before they were even born. You see stuff like that and it's very hard to imagine that she's never going to appeal to anyone who wasn't there when she was at her peak fame.

@@krombopulos_michaelI think what draws young fans to her is that there's rarely aongs out there that are about the authentic teenage experience, it's rare for a teenager to be writing their own songs and making it big, her earlier songs are really magical and sweet to listen to, and when you listen back when you're older it doesn't feel cringe at all, unlike songs written for teenagers by adults which can end up aging awfully

Look, I understand both sides of the discourse surrounding Taylor Swift - Swifties are immensely rabid about pretty much anything surrounding her, they can be really annoying, and they often seem to lack historical and cultural perspective and context especially when it comes to music. Also, Swift herself does not seem to truly give a fuck about the environment, and she can come off as someone who is in an immense position of power and still playing the victim, AND I EVEN AGREE that some of her latest albums are simply not that exciting apart from a select few songs. HOWEVER. In May of this year I went to Stockholm to see Swift in concert. I've been a Swiftie for a decade now, but realistically I'm not the typical Swiftie - I'm just a straight, 24-year old dude. Still love her music. What I encountered on that trip was something that simply could not be brushed away by deeming it a "fad" or "the trend of the moment". The community that has formed around Swift's music is simply incredible, I don't know how else to put it. There's a level of participation by the fans that will create moments that mean Swift's music will be played decades from now. She herself will eventually fade out from the limelight, but the memories her fans create with her music will stay, and they will be lived again and again by the fans by listening to her music. I was sitting in the arena and in the seat row in front of me were 2 girls who were at most like 13 or 14, likely even a bit younger. They literally danced for like 90% of the songs (mind you, the show lasts about 3 FUCKING HOURS), and they sang their hearts out, even got each other water when they needed it just so they could keep living in the moment, and frankly the whole scene looked like something out of a movie. These 2 kids just... it genuinely looked like they were experiencing the very best day of their lives right in front of me, and I truly don't think it's possible to discount that as merely a fad. As a whole, the atmosphere in the arena just felt... amazing. People were exchanging bracelets, complimenting each other's outfits, taking group selfies with basically total strangers, just having a great time. I mean even the damn hotel that I stayed in played Swift FOR THE WHOLE TIME I was there! Every single time I was in the lobby or getting breakfast, Swift was playing through the speakers and that to me speaks of a phenomenon that has created such a strong community of fans that the music will be played decades from now. No artist stays on the charts forever, but music does have the ability to stay in a person's memories for their whole lifetime.

I'm not a swiftie and haven't seen her live, but my wife is and even just from taking her to see the Eras movie last year I felt the same thing. I've rarely seen actual concerts with crowds that wild. And so many of the fans were little kids who couldn't have even been around when half of the songs were being released. You see something like that and it's very hard to see that this is just going to fade away or be one of those things with extremely broad but shallow appeal

At the Eras Tour movie, here in a mid size town in Oregon, I ran into a pair of women in their late 60’s/ early 70’s who first saw Taylor live when she was a teenager. My friend and I, both in our 50’s, went loaded with friendship bracelets. It was so much fun. Every single night of her concerts generated more money for the town than the Super Bowl.(I don’t remember which one but they recently hosted the Super Bowl). Every night for 3 or 4 nights. I’m not sure how you can generate more staying power than that.
