L's real name is L. Lawliet (pronounce Low-Light). It's never shown in the anime or the manga. It was revealed in a Databook that came out after the series ended.

While I do feel like the first phase of the show, the Light vs L storyline, is more fun than this one, it's not so much that I don't _really_ like this next phase of the story. I've seen some people complain that Mello and Near are merely two halves of L but, while they do have essentially half of his character each, they have their own things too. I see them as splitting L in two and forming new characters around those cores. The loss of L is rough, but the story isn't over yet.

Indeed, especially in the manga. Manga Near is my favorite character(with Light being my second favorite, L being my third, and Mello fourth)

i always felt rather than each being half of L, Near is L minus the qualities he shared with Light, and Mello is Light minus the qualities he shared with L.

L is really good at mind chess however he was just one lonely white piece on the board with Light across the board on the black side but now with L's death their is room for two more pieces on the board but with a twist...Near is coming at Light from the white side while Mello is on the black side. Mello is not working with either side but will call Check against his own side the first chance he gets. That's how I've always seen the dynamic between Near & Mello

Yes basically Near and Mello are 2 halves of L. Mello is L’s daring, risk taking and action oriented side, while Near is L’s analytical and methodical side.

i always felt near was l without what he shared with light. and m is light without what he shared with near. near is such he would never torture misa like l did. and mello would never convince himself he was trying to good. he knows he is a PoS. mellos sense of justice is non existent and near's is too strong

L didn't personally train near and mellow, they were just gifted like he was, it's not even clear if they ever interacted with L.

i always gave up on this show after L died, never bothered to watch the rest. the show just got ruined when Rem got introduced. it started as a cat and mouse game where two geniuses were both trying to discover each other's identities but then another god of death showed up and decided to L can never be allowed to win.

@@raveoreynolds6049 Rem says in like episode 11 or 12 that she'll kill L if he's going to find out Mikasa's identity without Light needing to do anything. L automatically loses at that point and there's nothing he can do about it. A god showed up and decided who wins. that's so lame.
