Nolans "solutions" to the more comic booky elements to keep it as grounded as possible are pretty interesting to me. Like R'as and the immortality/Lazarus Pit being made in to more of a legacy title and such. They all still make sense to varying degrees and you can tell thought went in to making it coherent.

I like that Nolan used much of the "Batman: Year One" graphic novel story in the plot. He seems to honor the source material as opposed to a lot of the super hero movies these days. Even in other stuff he's not really immortal, it's the Lazarus Pit that gives him anything resembling immortality since he can still be killed. In my heart, Batman Begins has one of the best mixes of realism and comic book fantasy in a Batman film. Moments like his first appearance at the docks, “Backup”, and the final Bat-signal scene are so comic booky and great additions. Aside from some comic inaccuracies, trying to make stuff more grounded/ realistic, and Rachel just not being that great…this movie is awesome! Some people nowadays kinda dismiss the Nolan trilogy saying that it’s only loved cause of nostalgia, but I think this movie holds up very well. Bale is great in the role, great Alfred, great Lucius, and great Gordon. Ra’s and Scarecrow were great bad guys, this is just the beginning for more. I actually really dig this as an origin movie and consider it one of the best superhero origin movies as well as a great movie. These movies made me love Nolan and created a whole new generation of fans. Great video!

I liked Reeves and Pattinsons direction they were trying to go. But overall I don't think the movie was good. I do like to see the detective batman though. The fighting was good imo. Dialogue wasn't great, needs improvement - Gordon says something, batman pauses for 10 seconds then responds, then Gordon waits a bit then responds. Taking a really long time to say so little. I get that he slow walks/turns so he can record everything, but we don't need to see him take 10 minute walks as Bruce Wayne just to talk to Falcone. It also felt like they were trying to hypnotize us by playing Nirvana on loop for a long time lol. Also, not much time with Alfred. I'm glad you enjoyed it

I like that you did point out. Yes Bruce/Batman is the symbol, but Alfred, Lucis, and even Rachel is all helping to make their city better. Batman just their vehicle to push it along. Batman makes the criminals have an extra worry. Like Frank Castle in the Punisher...if criminal see the skull on his chest, or even knowing he is on their radar, they know it is over. It psychologically a smart play using criminals' tactics against them.
@SyntheticFrost Жыл бұрын
I'm in my late 30's, so most people would assume that my first exposure would be the Tim Burton Batman. But no. Believe it or not, my very first exposure to Batman was the black and white Batman episodic serials staring Lewis Wilson from 1943, which was the very first ever on-screen appearance of the hero. It was on a set of VHS tapes I got at Toys'R'Us when I was little. From there, I grew up on The Animated Series which greatly expanded on my exposure to the character, which led to the comics and later the live action movies. My "canon" Batman will forever be Kevin Conroy. The Christian Bale movies have always been something of a mixed bag for me. Growing up on the serials and the animated series, I had a very firm internal idea of who Batman was, and while the Christian Bale Batman movies are absolutely amazing superhero movies, I've always thought that they weren't great *Batman* movies. Batman from the animated series and the comics is just a different person to me entirely. I see Batman as someone who was so utterly consumed by the drive to right the wrongs of his parents' murder that he traveled the world as a teen *training* for his life as The World's Greatest Detective. The Batman I know is renowned and revered by the other Justice League members as having an indomitable will as his super power. So seeing Christian Bale portray him as this sort of "lost soul" at the beginning just doesn't resonate with me. Then there's all the little nitpicky things as an existing fan that I know do not matter whatsoever, but bother me anyway. Like the fact that in the comics, he was *not* trained by Ra's Al Ghul, and the difference in pronunciation of Ra's' name. I grew up with it being pronounced "Ray-sh", not "Raz.". In fact there's even a scene in the Batman Beyond animated series where Talia even corrects the main character on that very thing. So to see most people, who've only ever been exposed to these movies, pronounce it like "Raz" has always bothered me. I know it shouldn't matter. But it does. And that just adds to all the other little problems I have seeing the Nolan films as good *Batman* films. They're excellent masterpieces of cinema, but it's not the best interpretation of *Batman*, or his detective skills, in my honest opinion.

In my mind, I think Ras in this is a title or, like you guys said, an idea. Someone takes up the name so that the League never dies with him. And if you think about it, Ras Al Ghul translates to Head of the Demon, making it sound even more like a moniker
@jackofalltraits214510 ай бұрын
Aside from Ras-Al-Ghuls Death, Batman's "No Killing" rule being stretched a bit, the choppy editing of the fight scenes, and Rachel as a character feeling very shoe-horned in (which makes sense since she was an original creation for this series) I consider this to be a perfect movie and personally my favorite of the trilogy. It's the one that felt the most like a Batman/Bruce Wayne movie, it had a perfect balance of comic book silliness and grounded reality.

Rachel was a great subversion of the "Bond girl" sort of love interests Batman usually gets. She doesn't have feelings for Batman unlike others, she loves Bruce and overall, wants him to heal as well as help Gotham. She want for him what Thomas had. She's a childhood friend and a protagonistic version of Thomas Elliot. She was also kept in the dark for most of what Bruce was doing throughout his journey. She was let down by her friend when he was resorting to his baser instincts like "I just want my parent's murderer to die." and then when he returned he never got in touch. the only updates she got were through the tabloids. For all she knew, he came back after seven years, got his money back and started "swimming".

How did you find the voice btw after spending so much time with Kevin Conroy? I personally was never too big on Christian Bale's Batman voice but you kind of get use to it by the next movie. There's so many collegehumor videos where they recreate scenes using Bales voice and it's just so funny so I think those videos just destroyed his voice for me. Overall besides the voice this is my favourite movie in the Nolan trilogy from the Gotham City to the overall tone and colour grading not to mention this really being the first Batman film that showcases more of his early childhood and adulthood. I was never too big on the more grounded setting, Nolan was a little too grounded for my liking more so in the later films. Ras for example is not immortal in this universe instead using decoys which gives the illusions that he's immortal. This is a cool concept one I do like but the grounded setting always limit what Nolan could do and the villains he could use. Was never a big fan of the idea of "Gotham could be any city" which is why the city got more generic over the course of the trilogy. Gotham is as much of a character as Batman so turning it into generic American City Number 15 just never did it for me. But I know there's plenty of people who were introduced to Batman by these movies so they grew up with a more grounded look at the character which is cool removing any of the more complex comic book stuff. I know alot of my friends had massive whiplash when they read the comics, Watch earlier Batman movies or when they played the Arkham games and saw characters like Killer Croc or saw the more timeless Gotham City with blimps and people working around in a mix of 1930s clothing while using old and new tech in The Animated Series and Arkham games. Just two very different styles that would give any new Batman fan whiplash. No offence to anyone who likes the depiction of Gotham in these movies btw glad people enjoy it. Batman Returns, Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Beyond: Title may be spoilers, and The Batman are my personal favourites but this film is up there. Dark Knight is overall seen as the better film but I personally prefer Begins in terms of the aesthetic, architecture, and tone. Hope you have a blast with these movies and hopefully you check out the Tim Burton movies and even the Joel Schumacher films. Batman Forever I adore but yeah Batman and Robin is pretty... You'll find out. Oh Yeah and the Adam West Batman movie as well.

One of the issues this trilogy has is Rā's al Ghūl not being Arabic as he is described in the comics, the Animated Series and the Arkham games. Also, the name Rā's al Ghūl is Arabic for "The Demon's Head". The Arabic pronunciation for the first syllable is "Rah-us". The character's creator however chose to use the Hebrew pronunciation "Raysh". Also the whole "I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you" is widely hated by fans. Batman in the comics goes out of his way to save criminals even when their lives are in danger which is a core essential of his character. These films also totally mishandled Scarecrow. Jonathan Crane was initially billed as the main villain of Batman Begins, before the reveal that Ra's al Ghul is the real mastermind. Scarecrow is one of Batman's greatest rogues, but the films he's appeared in would not have you think so. I really hope Matt Reeves uses him in the future now has the perfect opportunity to redeem the character after the Christopher Nolan films brutally underused him.

I feel like people who watch Batman Begins for the first time are way too harsh on Rachel and its honestly kind of frustrating sometimes. Bruce objectively has his head stuck up his ass and is constantly taking his emotions out on other people, even if the context of why is understandable. If someone that I loved came to me and confessed that they almost attempted murdering another person (even if that person deserved it), I would also be furious with them. Because of how much I care for them and because I don't want to see their life change for the worse. It's not just the fact that killing another human being inherently changes you, it's also the fact that this person that I love is going to be put into prison for years. Even if Bruce killing Chill would be seen by many as justice, the law is the law, and someone killing a paroled criminal is still going to get charged with murder. This person's actions, regardless of the reasons behind them, would saddle their family and friends with trauma and outside scrutiny, which the family/friend group doesn't deserve.

The idea of "Gotham as a twisted version of New York" is common, though these movies modelled it more on Chicago, which they used for a lot of the location filming. Gotham is, of course, an old nickname for New York, and a reference to an old story about a village near Nottingham in the UK (the village's name is pronounced "Goat-ham"), where the inhabitants pretended to be crazy to discourage the King from having a road built through their village. Different depictions have treated Gotham City differently, but one common idea in the comics is that *both* Gotham and Metropolis represent New York... Gotham is New York in the rain at midnight in winter, while Metropolis is New York in the sun at noon in the summer. In the comics, they're often located close together: Gotham in New Jersey, and Metropolis in Delaware, on opposite sides of the Delaware Bay.
@CaptainAmercia Жыл бұрын
Feels very outdated now tbh at least in how the cities are depicted visually. Metropolis originally was based more on Toronto the co creator of Superman Joe Shuster, modelled Metropolis skyline after his hometown. While Gotham to me is more of a mix of Glasgow and New York City. But the idea is still pretty true i just feel that Gotham has moved away from being a New York clone same with Metropolis as well both developing their own aesthetic. That's something I'm not big on with alot of the film they treat both Metropolis and Gotham as New York, Chicago, etc. I saw the sets for the Flash and Batgirl films in Glasgow and they looked amazing visually with American style stores to the backdrop of Glasgow's Gothic architecture. The Batman as well looks amazing.

I wish everyone reacted to this movie the way Meg did. This is my favorite movie in the trilogy. I still remember how I felt in the movie theater 18 years ago when the movie ended. It was the most satisfied I had ever been after a movie (at that point). (And in my opinion), the Rachel character is the worst part of this entire franchise.

In the classic comics and old cartoons, Thomas and Martha were millionaires and Bruce`s inheritance after their murder as well as the accolades Gotham officials gave for their philanthropic work made him a billionaire.

My favorite superhero used to be Batman, then it was The Flash, but now it's Green Lantern. There's just something so interesting about the Green Lantern mythos as a whole. Granted Hal Jordan might not be likable for everyone - the Lantern villains themselves are great; Dex-Starr is a really cool cat 😎

I think it should go without saying that if someone can say “please don’t show us Thomas and Martha Wayne dying for the thousandth time” and still be effected by its depiction (when it inevitably happens because Bruce is ✨never going to get over it✨), it says a lot about the people working on it, and how well they understand it in order to still get us to care like Batman cares. Can’t wait for more :)

I like how Thomas Wayne, even though he doesn't need to be, his passion is to be a Doctor, I wouldn't be surprised, if he did not take a salary as a Doctor, he did not the Money.

Funnily enough, in The Comics Ducard who was created by Sam Hamm who wrote the screenplay for Batman(1989) starring Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger and Jack Nicholson trained Bruce to be a detective and what is Ra`s known for always referring to Batman as?"Detective". See M. Night? That is how you do a twist without insulting the audience`s intelligence! It's not that difficult!

Love Cillian Murphy as well.... and really looking forward to Oppenheimer. A lesser known movie of his that is really great and and a little dark is a movie called Sunshine (about 2006 or 2007). Has lots of top notch actors that are very well known now, but weren't at the time too much. You guys should check that out, I think you would both like it.

They didn't make the Lazerus Pits part of the story, instead Ra's as a name was immortal because just like in the show Arrow when the Leader known as Ra's is nearing the end of his life he chooses a apprentice that he trains to become Ra's when he is gone.

Your Opera-Man joke is what The Tick comic book did. His Batman parody was named Die Fledermaus.

Interesting fact when filming the training sword fight on the ice it was very dangerous as they were late in the season and the ice was actually melting down at this point

The best thin about this movie? There were lots before it that showed WHY Bruce became the Batman. But this one's the only that told of the hell Bruce put himself through to become the Dark Knight--He left everything he knew and dove into an ugly world, then the toughness of his training for 7 years which would have broke any one else. Now that's commitment.

I would highly recommend watching the tim Burton/ Michael Keaton Batman movies, for one the Batsuit, and the Batmobile were the best.And there just really entertaining movies. Also Michael Keaton is coming back as Batman in the flash movie.

She won't love man of steel. The Christopher Reeves version would be better. He had qualities Meg liked in Clark which Man of Steel entirely removed.
@abneraranivar346 Жыл бұрын
@@hashterg5024 she seems to like the darker aspects of heroes & how they deal with trauma & adversity & move forward(Kratos, Daredevil, Batman). I think the more modern/surface level nuance of a different interpretation of superman would be interesting to watch her react to. The superman animated series is basically Christopher reeve in cartoon form which she is currently watching & enjoying. Her watching Reeve would just be more of the same. Wouldn’t be as entertaining. Man of Steel has aged like fine wine. I totally feel she would appreciate it.
