1950s Oil Lamp Restoration - Lantern Restoration.
I restored old rusty 1950s Chalwyn oil lamp in the video. "Made in England" When I decided to restore a gas lamp actually I had lots of options as I have so many of them like Dietz and Feuerhand etc.
However I had the one in my mind which i was inspired by 2006 made Prestige movie so I decided to seek that particular lamp. As a result of my research I ve found out that the gas lamp in the movie was British made Chalwyn Fareast. Approximately 4 months later I was able to get a hold of this lamp that you see in the video. I am really pleased that I was able to restore something that I see in a movie and got inspired by it. Sir, I saw many oil lamps restorations, but, believe me, this was the most professional from all of them.You disassemble every single part of the lamp and you sandblasted them, wich I enjoy very much, you have all the tools you need, all the materials, primer, paint, everything.And most of all, you have accuracy, like no other restorer.It was a pleasure to follow your work. A big like from me, from Bucharest, Romania.And, excuse my bad english, it's not my native language.

Another great restoration! I know how much work it is as I just finished a 1925 Coleman Lantern. It's nickel plated brass, and was totally black with very difficult to remove baked on crud. As you do, I completely diassembled, cleaned and polished the brass/nickel parts, and painted the steel parts.

1:50 Advice, use pliers for any tab you want to remove. Reason being that, if you bend a piece of metal fast, you'll fatigue it, and you'll stress it, thus raising the chances of it breaking the next time you bend it. With a pair of pliers, you can slowly massage the tab (or metal) back into its original form and avoid that fatigue in the metal. My personal advice, get a pair of flat nosed pliers (only 5 mm wide in the jaws), and grind one of them to a thin profile. Those will be your special tab pliers, because you can slide them in behind the tab, without undue action upon the metal. Any cheap pair will do, and some sets of small pliers (the ones with red foam like handles) will already have that specific type of pliers you'll need. Just my 2 cents, nothing more.
