The double bass stuff later in the song isn't perfect. That's all I can point too, and it's still barely off at all. Even great drummers can often have issues hitting every note on the feet perfectly in time. The problem is you can't hear it anywhere near as clearly as everything else, especially when you're playing that fast and especially with a double bass pedal. Almost no drummer plays fast stuff like that perfectly in time, 100% of the time unless it's just 16th notes. Or unless their name is Chris Turner and have the best feet in the business.

@@xDjembexyeah but even writing something is completely different then actually playing it and executing it so effortlessly, especially so consistently. You can edit in a studio and have infinite takes, even programming/notating it on software makes it easy. The fact he does this one take live and in even crazier iterations off the fly is just insane.

I know, right. He's LITERALLY dancing across the kit with his sticks. I don't really know if there's any drummer that I think is better than matt, though it's incredibly close, especially with some of the gospel drummers out there that just have chops on chops on chops on groove. But He's still the best precisely because of his dynamic awareness. It's even more insane during those herta drags on the kick because he's not just muscling through those like most drummers do, he's accenting them which sounds like some kind of fucking massive ass machine gun next to the guitar thumping. Matt is absolutely god tier.

Watching Matt evolving in the last few years really was something. To my ears at least he was/is going into a far more "free" style... WAY more notes, a constant fusilage of impossibly accurate rudiments - this guy is obviously next level, just pure insanity on the technical front - but personally this very "Virgil Donati" approach is just less appealing to me than his more written out grooves and solos. Coincidentally, I'm not a massive fan of Virgil Donati. Not on video at least... I bet live this absolutely insane to witness. Just waiting on AaL to give in and finally tour with a bassist :P So... while I am personally less invested in his work nowadays, I am very curious to see where this guy goes next.

Incredible playing! Was very happy to see AAL live for the first time last year in Birmingham and Matt was really going for it with his solos. Those full sweeps across all the toms are just so powerful, something I always struggle to replicate! Can anyone tell (or even Matt himself if he reads these comments) whether he's doing double strokes on the bass drum with just one foot in the solo part from 04:04 to 04:07 ?? Or are they just really fast Bonham-style single strokes between the snare & tom hits? I try to add in heel-toe bass drum doubles a lot to make tom & snare fills sound more impressive (just a little trick to try and make my playing sound better than it actually is!) but was watching one of the other drummers on my degree course doing triplets between the snare, toms and bass drum, only using single strokes and it sounded great. Was interesting as we both had very different playing styles - his was a powerful heavy rock style, whereas mine is more choppy prog style. Although we were both massive fans of progressive metal! But seeing this simple but fast & huge sounding tom fill made me really want to steal that lick! Some of Matt's playing in this solo section just reminds me of that lick's vibe.
