English - Drivers view of Comeng Z1 Tram 9 running out from Malvern Depot for the morning run out for route 16 to Kew (Cotham Road). Z1 trams were known for their loud whining motors and number 9 was no exception. It's all history now as the Z1 trams are withdrawn and no longer run. So enjoy this historical vision. Ah the sounds of an old Z1, I miss that. I never took a video, but I do have an audio recording of a trip from St Kilda to Balaclava which really gets some great sound of the old Zeddy. Absolutely fantastic when they get some speed. Always great watching your fantastic vids Brenden, I am glad record these videos to preserve some great history. 👍

Oh yeah, the Z1's really did go way past there life expectancy, they just held on just strong enough in the end, they did seem to struggle towards the end of life before retiring.They were supposed to be retired a couple of times over there final years, but they kept on going. Hopefully the brakes weren't too much trouble in the end, didn't want accidents. Ah yes, the character of a Z1/2, the look and sounds, there's nothing quite like them. I can tell you like them, still rocking the Z1 display pic👍

The Cotham Road terminus says it all really. I've been in Oz 50 years next year and still those responsible for road development in Melb can't adequately segregate tram and other vehicular traffic in the suburbs. It doesn't help, of course, that the drivers turning into Glenferrie Road as you're approaching the single line section seem pathologically incapable of actually staying in the vehicle lane, rather than wandering all over the hatched sections. And yes, as an earlier correspondent notes, "beat the tram" is the most popular game in suburban Melbourne...

We are enemy number one on the road that's for sure! They all complain about how slow we are. Take us away for a week, double the cars, they may change their attitude...... probably not!

+Nick Godfrey That's correct. From a Depot I hardly work at, on a tram I hardly ever drive and a route I hardly ever drive! That's why there Was the surprised tone in the operators voice as I know most and they know I'm a Southbank driver not Malvern.

That intersection where the traffic starts tailing back at 6:40 looks a right nuisance, but a nice view once you're over the top of the hill.

It's a nice view looking along Glenferrie Road. What you saw also demonstrates lack of traffic priority for trams across the network.

I thought Zs had retired but when I last went, there were tones of Zs. I do like them however. Is it strictly Zs and Combinos that run on the Route 16?

Z1 and Z2 were retired and as a part of the MR4 tram franchise over the next 7 years, most if not all of the Z3 trams will be withdrawn as well.

You have to learn new routes and trams. You can't just walk up and drive a route and class of tram you don't know.

Every driver should do a radio check before leaving the Depot. It's all linked to the Central Operations Centre.

Is it legal for all those autos to be passing in the parking lane and cutting you off, or are they risking a citation?

+joel k All Melbourne tram routes have either fairways which allow cars and trams to share the road or full time tram only lanes. Cars can cross in front of a tram when avoiding parked cars for example but under no circumstances are they to delay a tram. The controllers on the trams are pedals, aren't they? Except for A and B class, are there any other trams with pedals.

+Colonel Leon A, B and Z3 trams. Everything else is hand controlled. W Class have a mix where drive controls are controlled by hand and the gong and sand button controlled by foot.

In the residential areas where driveways are possible, they should ban on-street parking to allow tram-only lanes in some places. Seeing the Melbourne traffic, I would certainly opt for taking the tram if I could!
