I visited Melbourne in late November 2018. Took this tram in the opposite direction from St Kilda. It was my first visit to Australia and I felt after 60 years of traveling the world that, finally, I had found what I had been searching for. Never have I felt so much affection or affinity for a city. Rather than feeling tired and abused, as is so often the case when exploring cities by foot (and tram!), in Melbourne every day I felt invigorated and so happy to have the opportunity to drink it all in. Truly a special city. I miss it more than anywhere. Many, many thanks for taking the time and effort to post these videos. Liked and subscribed, naturally.

The 96 is probably my favourite tram route. It's one of the best to see Melbourne. 20 years living in Melbourne I still love getting on a tram. It's a very relaxing way to travel, getting on and off easily, the way it meets up with train stations. You often don't need to wait long before a tram arrives. Melbourne would be a very different city without them.

Melbourne is a great city. I've been driving route 96 and never get bored driving it. As far as the points at intersections, most are automatically operated through loops in the road and transponders on the tram. Drivers select the direction using a switch in the drivers cab and the rest is done using the transponder. If that fails, we have a point bar and can manually change the points.

Many thanks for this excellent film. The whole route film shows the contrasts between on-street suburban, city centre and reserved track sections of the route. From 42:00 to 51:00 the line is a former suburban railway and the speeds are quite high, with stops further apart. You can see some former stations with high platforms, some with awnings shut off, now re-used. The catenary masts on this section look like the old 1500 V electrification for suburban trains. At 51:00 is what appears to be the old terminal of the suburban railway. This also shows how much faster the tram could be if it had reserved tracks and did not have to obey traffic signals though junctions in the urban area. At some of the stops the dwell time seems rather long. From 52:00 to the end the speeds on-street seem rather higher and the stops shorter. Less traffic and fewer intersections than in the city, presumably. The terminal is rather basic - just a single line in the middle of the road. The filming being looking forward can't show how the cars must stop when a tram stops in middle of the road, so that passengers can get on and off. This traditional traffic law is known to everyone in cities where there are on-street trams, but often not to people from outside, who then have to be honked at....
@Schony7477 жыл бұрын
Both the Port Melbourne and St Kilda Light rails were converted from heavy rail in 1987 and have been pretty successful ever since. St Kilda Station was the terminal for the St KIlda Railway line. If you check out the route 109 video you will also see the Port Melbourne Light Rail. As for cars and road laws - most stop and do the right thing. Tram priority is also a big issue in Melbourne and there is still a long way to go to give trams more priority.

Currently in the UK there are tram systems operating in South London (Croydon area), Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Edinburgh, and Blackpool. (Apologies if there is anywhere else I've missed out.) None of these systems however are as intensive as the Melbourne system.
@Schony7478 жыл бұрын
I don't think there are many systems in the world that are intensive as ours. 80% of the network is shared with cars and trucks and the sheer volume of traffic is so much more than some of the European networks that also share with vehicles.

This is an extremely valuable historical video. The risk is that it may not be able to be played in the future - a bit like VHS, Beta videos etc. Would you consider shooting it on Super 8 (and other tram lines) and keeping the film with a projector? You would have seen the Market Street in San Francisco film recorded in about 1900. Really interesting and actually moving, given the huge earthquake that was to hit them. Well done.

Thanks. It's very easy. I just set the camera up at the front of the tram and let it run. I do all the driving and don't go anywhere near the camera.

hah, this was before they pedestrianised Acland St. I must say it looks really congested with all the cars parked on the side of the road, even parked in areas where there would normally be tables for people to eat on! the tram terminating right in the middle of the road also seems kinda dangerous, and the fact that there's only space for one tram also seems like it might be a bottleneck in some way, but I guess the high frequency of this route says otherwise. it's also weird seeing Acland St continue through to Barkly St instead of there being a massive plaza separating them
@Schony747 Жыл бұрын
I think the upgrade is great. The old was as you say congested and messy.
@TheLostProbe Жыл бұрын
@@Schony747 yeah and there's still heaps of options for parking, mainly the big parking lot that you can access by going down the side streets and the Acland Court Shopping Centre multi-storey car park which is accessible from Barkly St. so not being able to park on Acland St itself isn't really much of a problem

It's a nice city. 20 years ago I was a bit hesitant to move to Melbourne from the country but I'm quite happy in Melbourne now.

How much Ackland Street has since my visit in April 2018. It's hardly recognisable. Great journey though, certainly takes me back.

Hi Schony, great video thanks for sharing. I took the 96 to St Kilda whilst in town last week, love love love Melbourne. I've registered for the Driven Women campaign as a tram driver...any idea where the Open Day will be held at?
@Schony7478 жыл бұрын
+Sally Burgess No idea as I haven't been around for three weeks. I recall a while ago one of the open days was held at Southbank my home depot. Ask me if you have any questions and I can give you my perspective.

Melbourne passenger numbers are higher than they were around world war two and it's growing. The weekends inparticular for route 96 is very crowded these day. It's insane the amount of people we carry these days.
