My mother was a homophobe her entire life until she discovered kd lang. She heard her sing, and was shocked when she saw a live performance in the 90's and could put a face with the voice. It took a couple of years before she stopped the hateful references to the gay community, but she eventually came around, and by the time she died, was openly praising kd without any mention of her orientation. Thank you, kd, for changing my mother's mind before it was too late.

that's pretty unnecessary bringing their sexuality into it. Woman you have a LONG way to go to respect people as people and not their sex life.
@guarddog3182 жыл бұрын
@@suave-rider - I would tend to agree... if people didn't make such a point of their sexuality these days. I mean, hell... I grew up with Elton John, Freddie Mercury, and a whole host of folks that, although most people knew their particular preferences, nobody made an issue of it when it came to the music they produced. Especially not THEM. But these days, the whole sexuality thing seems to come first, like it's THAT which somehow gives them credibility and self-worth. ( and don't even get me started on the whole "gender/personal pronouns nonsense. ) ...and it's utterly fucking ridiculous. The same as it is for people like you to call someone else out for speaking their mind while doing the same yourself. So I ask you... where's your respect for other people? Because I'm certainly not seeing it here.

That's because there is only one voice. k d gave Melissa the floor because she sort of took it! Melissa needed it so k d allowed her to have it! Not just because she's kind but because she doesn't need the recognition like Melissa does, who is much more aggressive. I don't say this in an offensive way...just being honest and realistic. Scott, your remark makes much more sense than a lot of others which I call "wish fulfillment."

When she said "sing harmony" she meant business by god. What a mind-blowing performance

That is what she said and is what she delivered. Mind-blowing for me (straight male) too.

It's like 24 years later, a quarter of a century. What an amazing song they laid down to have repercussions so long later.

I don't care who they sleep with or don't sleep with, or what their preference is in the sack....They are both phenomenal musical artists.

This is the 2nd best harmony I have ever heard. I had to listen to this 3 times before I could actually hear the difference between KD's & Melissa's voices. The crescendo they hit gives me the chills every time. Fabulous, Ladies, Multi Brava! (The best harmony I ever heard was an acapella spiritual sung by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, & Emmylou Harris. I was crying buckets by the time they were finished.)

I don't give a shit whether Lang or Ethridge are gay. They could be straight as a flagpole for all the difference it would make to me. Just happens that here they have harmonized in a wonderful way, and I can't help loving the way they do this song. I haven't heard anyone do it better.

It matters to those of us that are, especially it mattered at the time. Cause it just so happens these songs speak to us in a way that straight peoples' didn't always do at the time, even if anyone might well relate. We didn't have these songs when *I* was a kid but I remember being in high school and my girlfriend and I relating to a lot of Springsteen about it. It would have mattered more if that song was on the radio then, too, but I still think of that a lot. Gay *guys* have all that disco and dance music they call 'gay culture,' .....us gals don't have so much and it's not even *about* 'this is issues music,' (cause it isn't.) Some things are just particularly precious and I don't mind saying nostalgic.

All I could hear was Melissa ; I could barely figure out when KD was "harmonizing"......it was really low. She did not want to steal any thunder from her friend.

@@linanicolia1363 That's the way too she sang with Orbison on his song Crying. I think it's called coloratura. You don't know that you can hear her, but she is there, and in fact she is moving the melody. This is but a part of Lang's brilliance as a singer. I hope one day, perhaps before she dies, she will be recognized for her amazing talent. If you've got some time, take a listen to this particular version of Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah" kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpCxoauKjMeirKc not that it shows her background, but rather the reverse.

@@linanicolia1363 That's true. Listen to her on the Orbison song "Crying" on which he used her accompaniment. She's barely there, but even so she makes a huge positive difference to his original recording. And then listen to her 1990 solo cover of the song at the Orbison tribute into which she pours her whole emotional repertoire. I haven't heard anyone, not even Orbison, bring this song to this pitch. Lang is one of a kind, one of a century, I think.
