I have to chuckle at how Ariel got a daughter who was so much like her. I’d honestly love to hear her conversation with Triton about being a parent to a strong-willed child. However, I suspect Triton would remind his daughter of his similarity with her in that they both wanted to protect their children and how they didn’t go about it the right way.

Hot take: The Little Mermaid 2 is one of the best Disney sequels. Yes, it has a story that's the same as the first one & Ariel could've done a better job to protect her daughter, but in some ways it feels very different and her actions are born of a mother's need to protect their child. Melody herself feels very different from her mother and it helps make the journey feel different as a whole.

Ariel wanted to prevent her child from leaving the "safe" home she had just like her dad did to her, but she remembered that her dad just giving her an ultimatum didn't work & she didn't want her daughter to think of her as the overly strict parent like her dad was. So what does she do? She tries to prevent her daughter from even knowing about the sea & tells her nothing, thinking that she could avoid conflict as her kid couldn't rebel if she didn't know there was another choice. Big mistake! By doing that she left her daughter not knowing that there were villains in the ocean too that might put her in danger or try to use her. If she had just explained her own story before Melody discovered the locket, how she messed up & a villain almost ended up getting the trident because of it & how dangerous that was, then at least when Melody defied her parents & went into the sea she wouldn't have been tricked like that. In fact if she had been told the truth up front she might not have lost trust in her parents & run away at all. Parents that think they can keep their kids safe & under their control by keeping them ignorant of the real world (or an important truth like they're adopted or a parent/grandparent is terminally ill, etc) are actually hurting their kids & typically it ends up backfiring anyway. It's best to tell the truth, starting with age-appropriate wording when they're little & then adding more detail as they get older.
@tamarasmith90602 жыл бұрын
@jf k She was WAY past old enough though. If you wait til they're teens then you've waited too long. Little kids can understand that parents are people too. People that were once kids like them, made mistakes, & learned from those mistakes. I was 5 when my my mom left my dad & started the divorce process. She was totally up front with me on why: his addiction & all the consequences so far, making him majorly irresponsible & no longer a good dad or husband. She wasn't exaggerating for sympathy or custody either. He wasn't just a financial drain, he literally almost killed me because while she was working he got high & forgot about me but remembered he hadn't cleaned his hunting rifle yet. 🤬 Then when I was 7 I had clear opportunity to get away with trying smoking with a neighbor kid, but I knew that addiction can happen & lead to bad things. I told her no & even told her she shouldn't do it either. What if she got addicted & then later had to choose between buying cigarettes or feeding her kid?
@everythingproductions2004 Жыл бұрын
@@tamarasmith9060 I think there are some reasons for that if you consider logic and Melody's situation in the human world. 1. If you told your child that there’s someone out to kill them when they are very young, he/she will become very scared, and have nightmares about it. That could also stress the child out, which could have a negative affect on other things in life, like school. Her grades in her work would lower which would decrease her chances of moving forward in the education system. Also, if she were to explain why, her superiors and peers wouldn’t be believe her. Apart from Ariel, Eric, Grimsby and Eric’s crew, no one knows supernatural stuff is real, so likely those people would not believe that supernatural stuff can happen, and that’s exactly what the majority of other superiors of Melody would tell her (such as whoever her school teachers were). So if Melody were to tell these things to them, they would think Melody and her family are crazy, which would just lead to even more bullying from Melody’s peers, which would make her and her family a laughing stock. Would you as a parent want that for your child? No. Especially if you are a royal family, and your child is the future ruler. And before anyone asks why Ariel couldn’t just show the evidence with the help of her father, he and his soldiers were on the hunt for Morgana, and won’t stop until she’s found, so that makes Ariel showing the evidence to everyone much harder. If you ask me, stopping a lunatic from killing your family (keeping you family safe) is more important than maintaining a reputation for your family. Besides, if people don’t think well of you and your family even though you are being good and honest, that’s his/her fault/problem. 2. I actually doubt Melody would believe her. Why? Because of the thing of no evidence of supernatural stuff being real I mentioned in reason 1. 3. Melody already has enough things to worry about as it is. She’s already worried about not living up to her mother’s level. Plus, she’s bullied by her human peers. So, if Melody were to believe Ariel, she would tell the others, which would lead to the same outcome of her and her family becoming a laughing stock and all that jazz which I mentioned in reason 1. But you can disagree all you want with what I've said. We all have different opinions after all.

Thoughts: 1. The Little Mermaid 2 is one of my favorite Disney sequels (and one I will watch willfully)...namely because Melody was living my fantasy: to go be with the merfolk. 2. I always wondered what their world then looked like after the kingdoms were united...does she still have her Atlantica visa, and where can I get one. 3. Disney, being the musical storyteller it is, loves to wrap motifs in the backgrounds of certain characters. Ariel's main melodic line all comes from the first song when she says, "You are my world, my darling. What a wonderful world I see. You are the song I'm singing in. You're my beautiful Melody." But every time she is singing on screen or Melody is discussed, that motif continues to play. During "For A Moment," Melody is singing her own song...Ariel is singing her Melody," and both tunes differ in many ways...until the very end when Ariel said "I will hold you close, my Melody, and sing a song of the sea with you," and Melody said "For a moment, just a moment, I belong," and both of their tunes converge at the final number. At that time, it foreshadowed them being reunited as dual-walkers of the human world and the merworld, as mother and daughter, and in song. ...lemme go watch this movie again. Great video Isaac!

Same. Frankly I don’t get why Ariel gets praised so much for basically being a spoiled brat who disobeys her father the entire movie. I understand she just didn’t belong in the sea and felt a strong connection to the human world instead, but she still made some pretty risky decisions that could’ve easily put her family and kingdom in danger. Like people say Pocahontas put her people in danger for a man, and completely forget it was her love for him that helped her father and the colonizers see the error of their ways (regardless of historical accuracy) But yes! Frankly I liked Melody a lot more and find her so cute and adorable. But I also relate to her a lot more than Ariel, who seemingly threw her mermaid life away just for a guy. My main criticism is that NEITHER sequel (Ariel’s Beginning) actually shows Ariel’s curiosity about humans or wanting to travel the world with Eric to explore about the human world. Little Mermaid 2 is completely based on Ariel’s love and overprotective nature of Melody, and she doesn’t really seem to care about behaving like a proper lady or anything

It's true that Triton was a bit rude and overprotective BUT he didn't put Ariel in prison or locked her in her room. She literally asked guards to build a giant wall around the castle AS WELL as putting metallic bars under the water. Ariel also hides her origins to her daughter which makes no sense. Telling her she was a mermaid before would make Melody happy and wished to explore the sea with her mother. It's a fun way to developped her relation with her daughter. Telling her about Morgana and the troubles she had with Ursula is a better way to protect her.

Yes but remember melody was kidnapped as a baby and barely rescued before things got really bad. The kidnapper escaped and because if she had tried to go on land she would have been obvious to everyone in sight. Ariel hope that the wall would keep her daughter safe until the villain was caught. She kept hoping that her father would catch the villain and then she could share the sea with daughter. She probably was waiting until melody was old enough to handle only that day came a lot sooner than she realized. She had about to explain everything when she ran away. And she every right to be upset considering melody had been almost captured once and her disobeying without at least trying to talk with her mother about it was wrong. Triton was just prejudiced against humans for what they ate. Like there aren't fish that eat fish. Ariel had done her best to learn about humans before she was driven into Ursula arms .

I always wondered if there was more to Melody's locket than we see in the movie, especially because it was gifted to her by King Triton before Morgana threatened Melody's life. I would always think about if there was more to it for him to teach Melody about as she got older maybe to help keep in touch with her family in Atlantica, help her see what's going on, or even if it could do something to help her visit Atlantica whenever she wanted. It's so similar to the music box that was gifted to Queen Athena. Issac have you heard the theory that Eric is the King from Cinderella because in Cinderella 3 he gives Anastasia a seashell which he said was a memento from his wife who passed away. We see a picture of the king and his wife dancing, which he mentions she was bad at and his wife also has red hair. All these traits line up with Ariel, who couldn't dance well, has red hair, and was a mermaid which would explain the seashell. This makes the Prince, Melody's younger brother, and as to why she isn't present, simple she chose to permanently become a mermaid and live in the sea once Ariel died. This would explain the king's line "I only have one son who can give me grandchildren" as Melody left Eric and he probably isn't aware if she had kids since he saw her last.

"I was informed very early on...by the head of Disney Channel, Gary Marsh, that the reason this project has taken so long was because Disney Corporate had to approve of somebody officially embellishing on the original stories, because that is what we're doing," Dove explained. "Anything else, like Once Upon a Time, hasn't actually been an official embellishment on the story," she continued, "We. Are. Canon." Descendants was actually the first time Disney was officially touching the classic tales of their movies. "That's why it took so long, because apparently, Disney corporate was like 'That's a terrible idea, we don't want to mess with the original stuff.' And so [Gary] told me that. He was like, 'This is the first time that this is ever going to happen.'" Dove adds, "Disney Channel is it's own thing, it's own beast, so to be told you're involved in the classics is like, there's nothing more delicious than that. I think that's why we're all so invested in the series and the franchise itself because it's the first time!" I also noticed that the way Ariel is with Melody is the exact way that Triton used to treat Ariel but for different reasons - 1) Triton was protective of Ariel as she was his youngest daughter and the spitting image of his wife and warned her to stay away from humans as he considered them dangerous as they played a part in his wife Athena's death, that's why he banned music 2) Ariel was also superprotective of Melody as she was her only child and banned Melody from going into the sea for a similar reason.

Plus, I love the character of Melody, and how similar to her mother Ariel was. And I think it's sad that Disney hasn't done anything with Melody after the DVD sequel. Not even giving her own Disney+ series either.

You've got spirit to overlook this film's glaring flaws in favor of the potential of its relatable themes. Even if it couldn't have matched the first film, it still had the potential to be much better than it was. And your positive analysis on the film's themes only reinforces for me why.
