I was educated in English based secondary school in Hong Kong from 1988 to 1993. All subjects except Chinese and Chinese History were taught in English. Perhaps old people like me (now 49 living in the UK) know better about British English (not American English) than younger people who were born after 1997.

Honestly, we do use cheap to describe the low prices in Canada! No one will think you are talking about the material when you use the word cheap!
People say cheap price, good price or cheap quality, good quality are very common in Canada, if described a cheap person, that means “孤寒”

Hmmmm. Not sure what to make of this video. "Cheap" is a perfectly good adjective to use. And as mentioned by other commenters, depending on context, it can also have negative connotation. For example, "the car is cheap" is perfectly good, "the car looks cheap" not good. "that dress is cheap" - good. "that dress looks cheap on you" - very not good 🙂 I wish Melody can emphasis how and when use of an adjective is perfectly acceptable and how and when, to avoid these. BTW - "stealing price"? "it's a steal" is more common and recommended.

@@lewistsao3279 makes sense. 用 “cheap" 形容價錢, 客觀陳述,中性 neutral,冇貶義 用 “cheap" 引伸形容其他東西,例如,行為,性格,個人,往往帶有貶義 derogatory ,經典例子: a cheap girl

inexpensive is a good word to replace cheap in terms of value
Even though cheap is OK to say, my opinion is, if you say it in front of your friends, yes, there's no problem. But when you're in an interview or in a formal occasion, we better avoid using the word "cheap". My point is, it depends on the targeted audiences. I guess this video is more for the audiences who do not speak good English. It's better for them to learn English & use it in a proper way. 😊
@@MelodyTamdon't feel bad. I like it when you express something in a more appropriate way. It sounds more polite. 100% no one will get offended compared to when we say 'cheap'. Good job 👏👏

@@MelodyTam 物有所值: it's worth it, it's worth the price / cost, 冇問題,係呢個意思。 日常口語,常用與否,兩大原則:1. 順口, 押韻, 2. 用字簡單, 句子精簡。故此 Cheap as chips, cheap and cheerful, value for money 常用。

Cheap=賤價?
@kingmancheung56785 ай бұрын
"Cheap" 有冇包含貶義,“賤”,視乎語境, context, 不可一概而論。以下兩個例子,一定有貶義: 1. Cheap behaviour 類似賤格 2. 如果用嚟形容人, eg, using it to describe a girl, the meaning is very specific and negative.
