That circle is exactly my problem, I failed many times in different things, and felt very proud later on when I pushed through, but now I am again in that position where fear is coming back stronger because I know how it feels to fail ... hence anxiety comes back :/

You either win from an experience of learn and grow from an experience. It's all a matter of perspective. Every failure is a learning experience. Once we decide to feel the fear and do it anyway we learn that every 'failure' is a gain because it shows we are chasing our dreams and learning along the way rather than waiting for the perfect moment (which never comes about). Remember you are one failure closer to success. Keep going, anything is possible!

Not good enough, been told this my whole life! Raised by abusive parents so nothing I ever did was going to be, despite whatever I did, it was not ever going to be good enough for anything and anyone! I'm seemingly stuck in a dead-end, low paying job that I truly despise and ALL I want to do is follow my dreams. It takes so much effort just for me to get to this job, to stay at this job, to pretend to be OK there. I'm dying inside from this current life and this horrible job! I have to try doing whatever I loved to do years ago, I need to get that creative spark back and try to move forward in some small way.

I perform music on stage weekly (guitar player) and I suffer from severe performance anxiety due to my deep fears of failure. Imagine taking off on a blistering guitar solo only to lose focus, hit the wrong notes, or just go blank momentarily. These are my deepest fears when I perform… However, I have learned to use these awful anxieties and fears of failure to motivate me to practice so much that I know my muscle memory will overcome the nerves and anxieties of performing in front of hundreds of people. I see my fears of failure as a blessing! I love what I do and no way will I ever allow my relentless anxieties and fears stop me from performing on stage. Practice, practice, and practice is my solution to this horrible problem. Tomorrow morning, it all starts again but I’m ready, I’m prepared, and I’m going to do awesome! 🎸😊🎶

The only way we really fail is failing to try. We get so caught up in comparison and self-defeating thinking that we forget that everyone starts somewhere. We can't compare our beginning to someone's end product. We need to take that first step forward and keep taking baby steps. We will get there eventually! We also can't hold ourselves up to impossible standards! Sometimes "done" is better than "perfect." :) Have an amazing day, everyone! We're all in this together!

I really needed to hear this ... I started posting singing videos recently, and I've been so self-critical, I take days to film one cover because I keep playing the same song again and again until my fingers hurt from playing the ukulele. Even after posting, I still think in my mind "ugh, I could have done better"... I honestly feel scared and embarrassed at the same time, like how could I ever be as good as other great singers. This video really helped to make me understand that it's okay to feel afraid, embarrassed, scared to fail, because all of that just means I'm actually trying and putting in the work to get somewhere. Thank you! ❤

Mel & Friends, aren’t failures a given towards achievements? Of course we aim to avoid devastating failures, but all success stories are loaded with some failures... in my assessment of all successes, there seem to be three real forms of failure. Failure to start, failure to learn from failures and failure to get back up, dust yourself off, and get going again. Les Brown days, “Shoot for the moon, land on the stars”.... if we don’t start/launch, we’re stuck holding our fears, looking up at the stars. Let’s shoot and land among them! Thank you Mel for all you do! You’re a stars in my book! Best to all!

Nope. I failed the bar exams because I pushed and tried outside my comfort zone. I failed not because I was afraid to fail. I failed because I did not have the right support system, I was not in the right time or place. I did not have the right circumstances or history, up bringing. Its a lot of factors. Save that you have said. And after failing the second time I gave up since I placed everything already on the line. Then I succeeded when I saw that everything comes in place for yourself in life.

YES! I have always wanted to use my voice in a creative way, either singing, or doing voice over work. When I am alone, I can do crazy voices and accents, feeling free in myself. I recently took a voice over class through college continuing ed. I was in a class full of naturals, felt awful about myself, and left the animation class early...:( I inhibit myself in the presence of other talented folks :(. I had an email from the instructor after the class to find out if I was ok. I am not feeling comfortable to go back to the last class, but I will, just to commit to myself and to not run away (which has been a pattern for me...)

Thank you Mel. This is helpful. I have become fearful of too much hard work. (What most people would call normal levels of work.) Because I haven't got results. In fact, since my PhD, I believe I've achieved less and less with each project or year with my hard work. Maybe including my PhD. Maybe that was a high-point in achievement per time. So, why work hard? I need to work on things: 1. I can do And 2. I want to achieve. Then, maybe I'll achieve my goals, then find new goals after those. I shall try. And I shall try again. I'll keep trying, moving forward probably.

I have ADHD. Every day, I fail at most things. I have 4 kids, 2 still very little, and 1 still kind of little. There is no such thing as a “successful” day to me because every single plan goes awry every. Single. Darn. Day. I have learned to adjust my definition of success to “Today, my kids got 3 meals and at least 1 snack. They ate off clean dishes. They started the day in clean clothes. They ended the day in clean jammies. They brushed their teeth at least once today. They all have health insurance now and we can catch up on Dr. stuff... None of them died today. None of them died. Despite the very real possibilities of potential dangers. They’re loving and compassionate and fun and smart and developing. And nothing else in the world has to go right because that’s all there is. There is so so so much more I wish would work out for us but I can tow this line day after day for years and get by... until... until they’re less dependent, can dress themselves and use the potty... can spend some time at school... Then, I can refocus on the bigger goals for this family. But right now they need me making sure they are alive, and bathed regularly... so, that’s enough. That’s ok. It’s ok. Even if it’s not ideal, it’s livable and we can improve a little bit every day or every month or every year until we get there.

I am so glad to read this comment. I hope you see it. I had to do something like this myself. I 0:00 fought the negative family dynamics. I devoted my whole day to caring for my kids. I became the parent who was always there. We left the controllers, the doubters, and the people living a double standard. Lots of hypocrites. I made myself go to sleep and rest most nights. I learned about taking baby steps toward my goals of living better. I learned more lessons about who I did not want to be. I kept my faith in the face of haters. I humbled myself to Jesus and told him I felt like I was not doing enough. I needed his wisdom. He brought peace to my heart and my spirit. He led me to the mentors I needed. I became a woman of faith and a better Mom. I got brave. I walked away from all the "impostors" in my life. Former friends who had gotten so used to a "people pleaser" that when I stood up for myself and my kids, I was being "stubborn." So be it. I had found my voice, and I was going to use it every day. The word "No" became freeing for us. My kids grew up knowing they did not have to fit into someone else's box. We have all been learning how to set up the paths we desire. I put quotes on the walls of our apartments and houses. I made lots of mistakes. I got into debt. We had to leave a home I bought due to abuse. I thank you for sharing your comment. It will help other parents, who wonder if they really have what it takes to keep it together and love and care for their families. I am praying for you and your family. Especially your children. Oh, yeah, I want to tell you about the bullies in my elder family. Many of their relationships ended. They were removed from authority, and some lost their health. I am not happy that they ended up like that. But, the abuse and oppression finally stopped.😊

I've learned a lot about success and failure from the Greek myth of Orpheus. For a brief background for people who aren't aware with this story, he was trying to save his wife and get her out of Hell so the God and Goddess of the Underworld let them go to live on a happy life together under one condition. They had to walk out of Hell with Orpheus in front and Eurydice behind on the trail and Orpheus couldn't look back, but at the end he does turn back cause he didn't have enough faith in her. Success is a journey out of another world, which we call reality and sometimes reality can be hell. When doubt comes in, we can relapse and our fears from the past will over consume us. My advice, don't look back and trust that if you keep climbing the mountain you'll eventually reach the top. It will take time and effort, it won't be easy. But imagine your futuristic self is walking behind you, guiding you to your desired destination. You won't see them, you won't hear them, but if you believe in yourself you will feel their presence more which only helps encourage you to climb more.

Your video made me realize one thing. Lately I have been experiencing huge fair of failure which i think leads me to apply and right stuff when i am close to the deadlines. I think in some sense i feel i don't deserve it and i am not good enough. Probably because my elementary school teacher bullied me whole time and i think I am still that 10 years old girl who has been called stupid in front of the entire class

takeaways: PUT IN THE WORK + TRY + dreams are meant to be pursued, not achieved + fail or be willing to be embarrassed + failure happens when you give up + keep on moving forward + and a lot more... THANK YOU! will try even if it's slow.

About pushing through; I always get stuck and can't quite get myself to try again/start. I stay up late because I don't want to lose hope that I'll do some work eventually for the day, but this just causes me to be even more upset when I end up doing nothing and not getting enough sleep to properly function the next day. It's not even procrastination, I could be crying the entire time or staring outside the window without actually plucking up the courage to look at the material that I'm supposed to work with. I have tried all the tricks from the 2-minute rule to study groups, they haven't worked out in the long run and I just end up disappointing myself once more. The current slump I'm in was triggered by several changes in my environment but I can't even think about changing my environment for the better again because I'm so anxious about the work I should be doing. So I don't do any sport, I don't do the house work, I don't eat healthy meals, I don't read, I don't write diary, I don't draw or use any other creative outputs, I don't meet friends and the music that's always comforted my in situations like these can't help me because my headphones broke once again I guess these are the subtleties I'd have to figure out in therapy, I just wish there was a temporary solution to put these feelings of being a disappointment and already having failed aside so that I can efficiently use the little time I have left to finish the project.

Yes! It's super hard but take that first step, then the next and the next. You win by trying it and just keep going until you find that right fit. Kinda like shopping for a new pair of jeans... just keep trying them on and be open to ones you don't like before you try them on.

I learned Fail stands for First Attempt In Learning. We have all failed in some area in our lives. Lord knows I sure have. I was told most of my childhood I should have been aborted by my mother. I was invisible and when I was seen I was bullied horrifically. But it made me a strong woman today. I take care of my Mother to this day. But I have struggles with OCD, perfectionism and trust issues. But I give it to the Lord and have to take it one day at a time. So who ever is struggling out there with that negative self talk , you are not alone. You are normal. You are human. You are loved. Stop chasing happiness bc it doesn't always come. Just make a difference in someone's life and know that we are all struggling in some way trying to get through this thing called life. We will never be perfect. I will never be enough for my Mother. But I'm enough for myself. I will fail. I will have bad days. Just know YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE JUST BECAUSE YOU FAIL AT SOMETHING! God doesn't make mistakes. We are all here for a reason. Don't give up! Thank God for people like Mel who I listen to daily to show me their is still hope and good in this world.

A big hug to you. God made you and He loves you totally and completely. You are enough, more than enough in His eyes. He is your Father, your big Brother, and He had appointed you to His royal family--a true Princess in His kingdom. He is the Creator of heaven and earth and you are an appointed Ambassador of the Most High God. May He continue to bless you, empower you and fill you with His love, joy, happiness and peace that passeth understanding. May He hide you under His wings in the difficulties of life, and give you His wings to soar on through the good times. And always remember His VALUE of you when negative thoughts try to encroach--He created you, let Him define your self worth. And He loves you completely. Blessings to you

Thank you, God. Thank you, Mel. Thank you, @valn6584. I had to come against my doubts. I got back to my Bible and surrendered my plans to God. I had thought I could handle certain areas of my life, and God could have the big areas. When I committed my whole life and lay everything out to him, he stepped in and turned so many things around. He removed an unhealthy desire that ruined my early adulthood. Once the" pull" was gone, I knew I was free. Blessings to you and your family. I pray that Jesus will give you grace and strength for the day.

I was just sitting in my easy chair asking myself what the common denominator of feeling like not trying. Fear of failure is the key. May I find the courage in myself to face my fears.
