In today’s episode, I welcome back KC Davis, therapist, and bestselling author.
The episode before this featured her relatable, hilarious, and breakthrough ideas about everything from laundry to loading a dishwasher and giving yourself the freaking break that you deserve.
That episode was so insanely popular, we moved this up in the queue.
The verdict is in...
You love Casey Davis. So today she's answering your deeply personal and surprising questions.
In just 50 minutes, KC’s genius hacks and smart approach to everyday tasks will not only help you manage your to-do list, but give you back the time to rest without feeling guilty.
She also reveals the single most helpful item you can bring to someone when they are going through a very difficult time.
You ask the questions and she's giving you the step-by-step plan. She covers so much it’s hard to summarize, but here is my best attempt:
- The shocking truth about “getting everything done”
- Why you need to stop saying you’re fine - you’re BETTER than fine
- How to divide chores at home (yes, there is a right way!)
- Her “Fair Rest” rule for couples
- 7 genius tips to build momentum (stop waiting for motivation)
- The ONE thing to do for a family or friend who is struggling with grief or depression (don’t cook them a meal)
- Her unique take on self-compassion that will leave you in action
- How to maximize your free time so you can finally start that project (you know, that one you keep thinking about) or collapse on the couch and do nothing
Steal her scripts and her hacks.
You asked for more time with KC Davis, and we delivered.
Thanks for sharing this with all your friends and family that need it.
Xo, Mel

Another tip of mine re: the clothes. I keep a grocery bag in the bottom of my closet at all times and whenever I put something on and it doesn't fit or doesn't feel right, I fold it and put it in the grocery bag. When it gets to a decent level, I bring it Goodwill. This way if I don't like how something fits or feels, I don't automatically put it back into the closet just to repeat that all over again.

A trick I recently thought of: If I’ve worn something and thought…I don’t really like this…but it’s not clean now. I don’t want to give away dirty clothes (yuck), do I’ll put a big safety pin on it, so when I’m putting the laundry away, I’ll remember that was the item I wanted to give away. Just did it a couple days ago with a pair of jeans that don’t fit quite right and have TINY pockets!

Thank you for making me stop feeling guilty when I don't get something done. & fall asleep in my chair watching TV. I have had so much going on the past 40 years. I got laid off on my job of almost 29 years Dec 2022. & decided to retire. My hubby & I were together over 37 years & no kids. He was a workaholic & I think I turned into one also. I was his caregiver, his last 6 months while working from home due he pandemic. He passed March 2021. I went into panic mode with all the new responsibilities I got. At times I just have to shut it all out not knowing where to start. Then I do what I can & stop. I have actually put my dogs in the car & we go for a ride for a break. I'm learning not to care what others think about the house & his workshop & the yard. I'm really proud of what I have accomplished on my own since we lost him. I think he would be proud.

So proud of You @tacculum558🫶🏽 I lost my Honey a year b4 you March 2020 and it’s been an adjustment to say the least. Thankfully my children were adults or about to be. But making all kinds of decisions on my own has at times, left me depleted and wanting to crawl back in bed. I’ve learned to trust my body and give it what it’s asking for w/o the guilt. And Remember to ask myself what would Honey want me to do in this situation. Since He was so full of wisdom, kindness and Love🥹❤️‍🔥atm I’m reminded to be proud of myself as well. God has got us in the palm of His hands🤲🏽✨much love to you💛✨🪽🪽

This is exactly my life now, too. Husband died, family 2000 miles away, only remaining local friends about to move several states away. No children or grandchildren. House cluttered (truly cluttered, not oh dear there's a pile of paper on that one table -- try every single table and much of the floor). I'm sorry it is both our situation, but it is comforting to know that I'm not alone, ironically. I'm trying to find the energy to start trying to build a social network, but it feels exhausting at my age (mid 60s) -- still, I have hope. I'm rooting for you and for everyone in our situation.

I just started doing something KC suggested out of intuition a couple of days ago, and I can say, it works for me! I don't like choosing my outfit in the morning, smetimes it's a bit cold, or I am still half asleep, my husbund is still sleeping and then I can't turn the lights on, so I have to use the cel phone lantern and I hate that thing. So the other day, going to bed I felt, argghh tommorow I'''ll have to look for my clothes in the dark again, and it drained me a little. Then it clicked, well I could do it now.. And it has been best thing. Might seem silly, but waking up and having my outfit ready waiting for me in the bathroom made me feel warm, like someone else did that for me out of kindness.

@51:20 wow! Thank you. My daughter has a chronic illness and after 14 years of being a single mom- caregiver too plus working full time running a business. Ten years of the 14 years before my daughters diagnosis I did work on obtaining my Bachelors of social work. I have been @ my wits end- seriously starting to not care & give up.. I know I have to keep going- be there for my daughter while allowing myself to take “”FAIR REST”. It makes so much more sense now that I realize( after listening to this amazing podcast ), I have depleted my cognitive emotional resources.. I need to practice self compassion and allow myself to be HUMAN. Thank you Mel & Casey ( not sure if I spelled correctly?) I will be okay, I will get through this. Grateful for your podcasts.. ❤❤️‍🩹

This podcast was so eye opening for me! I struggle with ADHD depression, I also have a TBI , and found out that my brain is not triggering full force. So everyday life is a struggle, plus I'm a single mom of a 10 yr old boy. I have my mom and dad who help out alot , but really don't understand what is going on with me . I've been called lazy, unmotivated, I procrastinate alot, the famous quote is well it only takes 5 min to do, why can't you do this?? Or I didn't raise you to have a dirty house! I shame myself alot!!! I'm slowly in recovery and just take a day at a time Your podcasts have changed my life and make me smile every day and I thank you for that!

In 1988 my husband died of a brain tumour - my daughter was 4 months old - this podcast reminded me of the two greatest gifts amongst so many - a huge delivery of chopped wood and another of disposable nappies. At the time I was living in a New Zealand winter - I now pay it forward. I remarried & have had a wonderful life but have never forgotten those act of kindness - I wish I had heard this podcast many years ago because we all need that down time to look after our needs without guilt.

I've always maintained the right to rest too. When my children were upper-el and teens, I declared 2 hours of peace in my room after each day of elementary ed teaching. We all need to establish boundaries-children and adults. I love all that K.C. had to offer. She is an amazing resource. I love the way you interview, Mel, because you have such passion for making life better!! I shall keep the thoughts of these 2 interviews with me to use as needed. Thanks so much to you both.

Re: son's autism diagnosis He was autistic the whole time; no matter the diagnosis, the symptoms were always there. The diagnosis only changes how you shift your perspective. In my opinion, a diagnosis is an absolute blessing; we have road maps for the road hazards. Not everyone has a road map, but every last one of us experiences challenges or what I call "road hazards."

I love the 5% motivation - 5% on task. I get so much done by spending about 1-5 minutes on high priority tasks. By 5:00pm. I have breakfast, lunch, dinner, laundry, important phone calls, cleaning misc sh..it at least touched. Over about three days my house looks like a human lives there. I learned this tactic when I became a mom and would only do the things that I first saw when I woke up. I feel what your mind reminds you of is important (if you can not do it, notate it). For example if you wake up and there is a pile of clothes on the floor; then spend like 1-3 minutes picking up like 5 items. So, I would just start touching what my mind focused on esp in the AM. I noticed you can do a lot in 3-5 minutes. Some may not agree, but I like to rotate tasks (I do not focus on just cleaning for long hours); and I am still working on which categories deserve my first (best, highest energy) attention. For example, 1. (coffee) Take vitamins, 2, Brush teeth, 3. Eat, breakfast 4. Jot down ideas coming to me immediately (no family, drama calls in AM) 5. figure out dinner, 6. Do what I care about first (creativity, plan to get outside, start/touch cleaning but only necessary stuff first). I ask myself what is expiring or time sensitive? I try to leave less important cleaning (for about 10 - 15 mins) at night, even if I am drained (cleaning does not deserve high vibe AM energy). I save my worst energy for cleaning. I have learned that I am not managing time - I am managing my energy highs and lows. It is amazing how much your mind reminds you of what you care about based on your actions. The more consistent you are you will move like a robot or the matrix without even thinking lol.

I’ve had to let go of self-judgment because I just can’t get everything done due to disability. It is a bit stressful but overdoing it literally injures me. People will try & guilt disabled folks for needing rest too! That’s insane! So cold. We all need rest. You can also get paper-free paper plates. There are several options out there & OL & it’s not always cost prohibitive. Doing that can help with that guilt

I'm loving those ideas. Growing up in a hustling functioning like crazy household where processing emotions have been triggering for my parents and grandma who took care of us kids regularly, so no processing have been allowed or possible. I am in such an internally rush to take good care for me and my child while moving through glue from all the shaming and gaslighting those people did to me es a kid. All this back them motivations to be a good girl/woman. Peacekeeper for all the unprocessed emotions (for the whole family) that lay around like sleeping spikey hedgehogs in every corner or chair you just want to sink in for some rest. I just don't know answers and am happy for those gently and clear delivered answers and I'm learning to hold space to process my huge mountain of emotions that piled up over decades. A lot shame that I did not manage to make my mom feel good enough. What a twisted reality and perception of responsibility. I literally Al I tried is to get her ok to have an ok life but she could not receive any of what I did for her

I gift myself with paper plates and Friday easy meals and move nights. It's such a gift to get pauses into my single mom life. I'm incredibly grateful for these eye-opening and doable ideas. And the freeing from shame thing... as it's also hurting to recognize I'm in so much shame I didn't notice it. It's everywhere literally everywhere. In every area of my life I function out of shame and trying to get rid of this feeling like someone is directly behind me whipping me through the day, my life. A lot to process. Some ideas in how to process this without breaking down would be very appreciated. I fear i don't have the free capacity to process it as I don't have a second to call person for my child. It's only me so I don't dare to break down. I don't dare to open up things that need processing.

I can attest to having that one spot that is easy to keep beautiful and is a peaceful place. I remember, when my kids were little, how I couldn't stand all the constant messes. So I made one room be the pretty one. In case a person dropped by--I quickly escorted them there because I wouldn't be humiliated by the mess (and I didn't want to yell at my kids all day about their toys--they're kids. They should play.) Really great video. My children aren't small anymore but I still feel very much like I'm pulled in far too many directions and need a rest.

Mel I love you and this guest! I just had to scroll through and click a bunch of your videos before I found the second part of this specific interview with her.. can you pls make it easier to find this second part? This is sooooo essential for people like me and I’m normally not in the state I’m in now where I feel motivated enough to initiate the search for this second half lol so I’m sure a lot of people who saw the first one are in a similar boat but still need to hear this Ideally a cover photo with both of your photos so it’s easy to see who you’re interviewing along with her name in the title followed by a “part 2”

Routines/rituals work! I was the happiest I have ever been when I was in the midst of following routines. Somehow along the way, my routines were interrupted. I have had an extremely difficult time “re-establishing” them. A lot of “monkey wrenches” get thrown in to my efforts or plans, one being I never have any alone time to be able to have any peace of mind. I feel lost and frozen most of the time now.

how do you reconcile the time it takes to be self compassionate and doing the inner work to feel better and the commitments and pressure of work and society? It takes time away from productivity to work on oneself and i feel society doesn't allow us to do so...
