One of the things I love about your videos is you aren't afraid to try new things. Great stuff. The problem with cracks comes down to phase change and thermal expansion coefficient of wax. As the wax freezes, it contracts, a lot (like 10% volume change)! Since it is stuck to the sides of the bowl, the only way to relieve the stress as it contracts is to crack. Well, it could also form a big dimple, but the wick in the center is helping to prevent that. A braided wick might work (like in old school lanterns) to allow dimpling. Multiple pours would also help, so that each layer has a chance to contract a bit. But you could end up getting rings in the candle. The other option is to wait until it is almost solid before pouring (cloudy), which would also help, but not eliminate the cracks. Fun fact, the melting of wax is actually used as a motor. The melting wax can be used to engage a latch, connect a circuit (or disconnect), or a host of other things. As a for instance, they can be used to open the vent on a greenhouse when the temperature gets too high, then the vent would close when it cools down enough!

Need to take the wax off the heat and stir it until it goes a milky colour before you pour it, if the wax cools too quickly it will crack and well around the wick every time.

Maybe if you soak the wick in wax first, and cool them down slower, you might avoid the cracking.

There is no solution to stop the dipping and cracking. You just godda short the first go and re poor a bit on top after its cooled. I used to have a candle making biz and that was a big fight for a long time for me till I gave up and just did the 2nd or even 3rd top off till it cooled flat. Also if you freeze the wax first it will breaky easier :) one last thing lol, bees wax is pretty flamible. If that wax got on the element it would be a fire hazard.

A heat gun as the top starts to harden (since they harden outside-in) just for a bit will help with cracking. Way more time consuming of course, and soaking your wick will also help. Much love Tim

See if cooling the candles down slower will prevent the cracking. Like a Rupert's drop it could be cracking because the internal pressure is much higher than the surface tension.

Not sure but if you dunk the wicks into the wax before pouring them and let it dry before hand they might not crack because then its wax to wax... i understand it will melt once its inside the new hot wax but it might let the wick cure and absorb some of the wax before hand... besides that i dont think there is a way to try to stop the cracking besides what you said with maybe a circle wick... i assume the cracking is due to the wax hardening and shrinking when its cooler...

Not that I’ve ever made candles, but I think there’s a special solution that you add to the wax that stops it from dipping and cracking
@PaperMakersAdeludedbroad
@PaperMakersAdeludedbroad Жыл бұрын
Maybe the cracking but the "dipping" is fixed by pouring in molds with like spouts on top because it shrinks as it cools and that extra material in the spout fills the dip as it shrinks then you just remove the excess.
@keithyinger3326
@keithyinger3326 Жыл бұрын
@@PaperMakersAdeludedbroad yes on that fixing the dipping issue. There's nothing you can do about that other than pouring extra and cutting it off the top. That's just the nature of Wax. When you melt it it expands and when it cools it contracts. Some thermal switches actually take advantage of that property. Some thermocouplers in heaters operate on that principle. The wax expands and creates a pressure through the capillary tube which pushes a plunger out the other end to keep your heater on. If the heater shuts off, the wax cools off, the plunger pulls back, and it shuts the gas flow off.

A few things you could try: Make wax beads instead and fill the cup with them as beads. Lighting the wick will melt them into place. Try baking the wicks for a bit because it could be moisture? Try pre-dipping all the wicks, let them dry and then put them in the cup and fill with wax.. Either way they are awesome. I kind of prefer the crack. Gives it a nice aesthetic that matches the machine work you put into it. Gives it a more rustic look. Anyhoser, a big EH from Niagara Falls, Ontario!

If you're putting two wicks--- just spread them apart so that you have two flames, and it will for sure melt everything. Most jar candles that I have this size or bigger have 2 or 3 separate wicks in them. You don't have to keep your wicks together as one; spread them apart.

when you "recharge" make sure to NOT use a gas stove. Bees wax is VERY flammable. If you have to use a gas stove, put in on a non teflon skillet to keep any spattering wax from coming in contact with flames.
