That came out awesome! Cool idea! Do you think they would have came out cleaner if the channels had a direct heat source on them to keep them hot while pouring?
@bigstackD6 жыл бұрын
They definitely would be better I think if the molds were a lot hotter . The first 2 that came out where pretty shit as I recon the paint that was left in the mold May have been a factor . Although the mold did get hotter as I progressed so that definitely helped. With this particular mold I can add thicker pieces of U Channel to the already welded bits to make bars what ever thickness size I want so that’s good. I’ll do some thicker brass or copper bars in a future vid for sure. I should be able to use the lathe tomorrow night so should get a few blank coin molds ready for ya👍🏻😁.

Hi. You think that if i build a mini-foundry in the iron box of the compressor of a fridge, with 4 butane camping burners, 1 for every side, i could melt a bit of copper? Or the brass of the shells?
@bigstackD6 жыл бұрын
Aluminium maybe but brass and copper I highly doubt, they take a fair bit of kick to get them to melt but ide be quite happy to watch you try if you ever up load it👍🏻
@markfryer98806 жыл бұрын
Malcom Straziovitz I think that you would find that the camp burners would Not produce the required amount of heat from the flame volume. Camping equipment is designed to work at restricted pressure from the regulator between the gas bottle and the burner(s). You need to look at getting a higher or variable regulator and a burner that can deal with the volume and heat. Camping equipment is designed for light weight and won't cope.

Looks good, brass is so hard to pour bravo for getting it to work so well on your first attempt. I've tried making those thin sheets or bars that way using only aluminium and tin and lead have been a I guess a success lol copper and brass not so much I think because its still cool where I live hasn't been over 54 degrees Fahrenheit or I think 12 degrees Celsius and my wife insists that our Garage be used for her car. And does not like the smells that stick around for a few days afterward so all my melts and pours are done under whatever colour the sky is. Which is fine except for the neighborhood wants to stop and play 20 questions when I have 4kg of molten metal on the end of a long pole trying to concentrate on what I'm doing.

This is the first time I've seen you use Borax as a fluxing agent. Did you get the feeling it helped separate the dross? (The reason I ask is because I've tried different fluxing agents with aluminum and honestly can't say I notice any difference.) The bars turned out nice! I was going to make a katana for HS shop class, but couldn't find a piece of brass for the hilt. (That project turned into a knife.) Something like this would be just about perfect. I have to admit that when I saw your jig, I thought it was going to be an unmitigated disaster. ;-) Worked well though. =)
@bigstackD6 жыл бұрын
Yeah worked a lot better than expected the good thing is I can add thicker pieces of U Channel and just clamp em on to make the bars what ever size I prefer. I honestly don’t recon the flux really does anything 🤷🏻♂️. Maybe it needs to be put in at the start so it melts with the metal and attaches to impurities and helps bring them to the top ? Who knows. I’ve had a million comments over the last year of people saying flux ,use flux ,why didn’t you flux. I just stir the molten then skim and do that as many times as I need and that works fine . Also a lot of people probably don’t realise that you can quite easily pour our the clean metal under the dross/slag and if your careful nearly empty the whole crucible of the good stuff while leaving all the crap behind. ( I should really practice what I preach) eeehh no rush I’ll just keep plodding along.👍🏻.

@bigstackD6 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend I really appreciate that😁👍🏻. The answer to your question is yes %100 yes , the reason mine don’t turn out perfect like the movies is cause I always melt scrap metal and that always has a heap of impurities in the metal I melt . After I get the impurities out and remelt the bars or coins I already have it would be almost pure brass/copper (or what ever I remelted) . The way to get the bars perfect is easy you just need to spend sometime on them . I normally use a 80grit flap disc to smooth them out then go with sandpaper 240grit 400grit 800/1200/2000. Then after that I hit it with a buffer wheel and the bar will come up like a mirror. Obviously if I didn’t use scrap metal I could get mine perfect . Tomorrow night I’ll release a video with a nice big bar I made from padlocks 🔐 and other scrap and sanded it good . As you’ll see it’s not perfect but it’s pretty close.😁👍🏻😉

Yeah mate definitely not practical at all especially if I was doing this for scrapping ,but I’ll eventually remelt these when I run out of scrap and use for future casting projects , on this particular time once I was ready to pour I turned the furnace down low and only had it running for additional maybe 10 mins max while I poured the 5 bars 👍🏻. As this is just a hobby I’ll never take my metal to the scrap yard and I don’t mind spending a few $ here and there on me bars , they only sit there slowly pulling my shelf out of the wall but I love em😉😁.

@thewitness96416 жыл бұрын
bigstackD Casting ...well you could try making a plaster mold of a blundstone boot, use that in the green sand box to create the impression, then pour in the brass. Most of the brass will fill the sole and not much would fill the rest of the boots form. You could try a small version first by using kids blundstone boot as a test to iron out the mistakes that might happen. Obviously it wont be solid cos yer gonna try put your foot in it(not the kids boot, maybe yer big toe will fit). Would be funny to threaten people with a brass boot up the backside.

Here are the combined metals I came up with making real fool's gold. They are iron pyrite; brass; copper; zinc; tin and aluminum. I think all these combined molten metals make this realistic fool's gold I came up with for bars. Think over the new suggestion lad.
