VERY nice vid! I was scrolling through a list of brass casting videos, and very glad I picked this to watch for my evening entertainment tonight! Appreciated seeing the different 'raw materials' you used. I pick up brass when it presents itself, also copper, and would like to start casting ingots at some point. I am retiring from my job in early 2019 and will have a Lot more time for fun stuff then! Also appreciated your replies to commenters re: the various grits you used to get that bar so very perfect, the composition of the spoon you used, etc. I've collected quite a bit of brass connectors and parts, bullet casings, also "micro-scrap" plug ends, electrical components - I should weigh it out sometime, but it all adds up, in any case. Thank you for these presentations! I appreciate you!

This is insanely awesome! You should stamp 24k on the top or something... =) Some of those brass pieces look like those I dig up metal detecting every now & then... crusty as can be and a file is the only way to tell what material they are. I dug a solid brass threaded rod about 1.5" in diameter & 12" long this past summer... just about deafened me when I detected it. Thought it was lead at first due to the weight... hit it with a file & couldn't believe it was solid brass! If you wipe the polished brass with shellac, it'll keep that bright finish for a long time as the finish is invisible, but prevents air from getting at and tarnishing the metal. (I do this with my lathe tools all the time - works with steel as well as copper, brass, etc.
@bigstackD7 жыл бұрын
shellac aye cool ill have to look into that. Yeah my friend does a heap of metal detecting any gave me a big bucket of mixed metals he found but im yet to go through it and hell yeah that stuff is so dirty only a file and magnet could ever help.

I've been watching your videos for some time. Every video I watch on how to build a Foundry it's only good for aluminum and such so of course I have to ask. How is yours made? I have so much brass just sitting in the corner of my reloading room because I just sweep up all the brass that is laying around when I go to the range even if I don't have the gun that uses the casing.

Also if you were to purchase the devil forge similar to mine I would highly recommend getting the smaller burner aswell as then you can control the heat a bit easier when it comes to melting brass as you don’t wana over heat brass , the big burner it comes with is freaking way too powerful but perfect for copper and aluminium bronze , ive even melted cast iron with it 👍🏻
@norbertdavis89036 жыл бұрын
BigStackD - love your videos. I would like to know what brand and model of IR gun do you use as I noticed it goes above 800C (1400F+). Mine only gets that high which is fine for aluminum but not some of the higher melting point metals. I do have a bench thermometer that goes to I believe 1800F but have only got it to 1700F. I use a type K temp probe to measure the heat of the furnace. I would like to get an Ir gun like yours to measure the metal in the crucible.

Man has a hobby. An a lot of time on his hands. Nice collection copper, brass and lead. Needs to take time rebuilding his smelter waste of heat even for a hobby and pushing that we should recycle. Making a full size twenty five gallon smelter. The one you have waste heat that could seed up the smelting process if it held the heat a bit better. But you are a brave nut to be working with dangerous conditions. Please be careful. You are handling projects that are above the level of the tools you presently have. Using a short slag spong to remove slag at that distances with those gloves. I'm not sure you are the braves man I have ever seen or the craziest.
@bigstackD6 жыл бұрын
Yes my friend I understand your concern and I could do with an upgrade on my safety equipment I really need to stand back when removing slag and adding things to the Crucible. I am always thinking of safety first even if I don’t show it sometimes but I am very careful even if it doesn’t show that in the videos. I have a full face shield and industrial respirator I just need to upgrade on my gloves and some tools. Yes you are right I seriously need to consider rebuilding my furnace properly that’s for sure👍🏻

@bigstackD5 жыл бұрын
Yes I used steel U channel bar I cut the ends on an angle to give the gold bar look and welded some steel flat bar on the ends . The base of the mold is as follows 135mm x 60mm The top opening of the mold is 150mm x 70mm. I bent the sides of the U channel bar out before welding and all welding was done on the outside so is not to show up on the ingot. Get a mineral oil bucket for the steel mold. When it is still red hot like that quench it in the oil to retain its strength and prevent fracture

Actually that’s a good idea as that is my favourite mold😉👍🏻

Keep in mind that Oil tempering will cause fire on the surface of the oil bucket so keep it in a safe area

Exactly how much gas does it take to run this thing?

Hey buddy ita me again. Iv just got a propane burner and bottle with some gas in. It does work but i want to be sure im doing it all correctly and you seem to be the guy to talk to. I can get it lit and fired up however do i turn it off at the burner itself or at the bottle as iv heard it should be done at the bottle ? Whats your advice buddy. It would be nice if you could do a small tutorial on how you light your burner. Achieve the rite flame for smelting and then shutting it off.

Here’s a link for the burner I use he does a tutorial for the burner. Also I always turn the gas off at the bottle as I never like to leave any gas or pressure in the line 👍🏻. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6enq2t3hZd4brM

Thanks matey . Yeah she’s pretty cool to look at I recon but I just recently checked the brass shelf and the bloody things pulling away from the wall so I should probably do something about sooner than later 🤷🏻♂️
