Good job man that was a clean fix giving the problems you had. I don’t understand trailer manufacturers using box structure for framing specially on a boat trailer. Really need mono wall structure like C Channel or angle iron something that won’t hold water they tend to rust from the inside out if it’s box.
@davidcraft49093 жыл бұрын
I can answer that one, to keep it cheap and light. tubing has a better strength to weight ratio vs the solid pieces that you mentioned. That trailer is probably made out of .083" wall 2x4" and you can readily buy that at any steel supply. Its easier and cheaper to fabricate, but yeah its all fun and games until your damn trailer rots in half. So I totally get your point.

A FREIGHTLINER SEMI TRACTOR, The frame at the rear between both axles on both sides was breaking in half, I told the owner I can patch it enough to get it to a repair shop, BUT YOU CANT PULL A TRAILER, you will have to bobtail there NO trailer !! It was rotted to the extreme !! It still took me 5 hours just to plate it enough to leave the scale !! I would have refused it but I was already there !! Some jobs REALLY suck 😃😃 Great Video

Great work. I need to practice Texas tig. I’ve never had to stick weld rust like that. I’ve always had the pleasure of using Mig with rust to that degree, but if I had to use stick, I would probably try a long and fast forward whipping motion to try and keep the puddle cool enough to prevent burn through. I whip the rod out of the puddle an inch or two than quickly whip it back in, then quickly whip it back out and so on, usually with a “C” motion. That’s how I manipulate the rod when stick welding structural overhead, so the puddle doesn’t fall out on me. Obviously, you’re gona have some burn through welding rust like that no matter what though.

In my youth I worked for a welding, machine and ornamental iron shop. I was a welder’s helper, prep and finish worker(the grinder and slag remover). First job I was given was to do a boss to friend repair of a homemade pipe frame motorcycle trailer probably 30 years old and made that trailer look solid. As I started welding blow through was a major problem even though most weld and heat transfer was to the newer support metal being welding in. Almost the entire weld job required the Texas Tig method the boss came out and showed me after I told him, you know I ain’t the best welder here by far, near if not the worst. We had some of the best around that were really good and knowledgeable welders Ian’s repair welders. I told him the metal and the trailer was trashed due to rust through almost everywhere and it had already had a major amount of shit rug welding done on it. But, it stayed together and unlike our advice the owner continued to use the trailer. Hopefully if anything happens and this guy doesn’t replace the trailer but continues to use it you will not be taken to court for faulty repair work. Glad you would go and help him out. Sometimes your left doing work you would prefer to not have your name and business associated with no matter how big the disclaimer but at least now you guys can video your interaction with the person the work is being done for.

Flux core welding is way more forgiving but MIG is the ultimate as long as there are no wind issues, for thin or rusted out material.
@ProleDaddy3 жыл бұрын
Do you find that flux core *mig* is good on windy days?
@donsmith90813 жыл бұрын
@@ProleDaddy Yes, flux core is a self shielded wire that does not require gas.

@@ProleDaddy MIG means (metal inert gas) meaning you use solid wire and gas and run DC Reverse polarity or positive. Not good for windy welding. FCAW means (flux core arc welding) meaning you use a self shielded wire, you don’t use gas and run DC Straight polarity or negative polarity and is made for windy and dirty surfaces, it is more aggressive and penetrating than MIG.

Recently I've done jobs on old steel boats, approx. 5 by 2 metres in size. The boats are over 60 years old, cultural heritage, and have been coated with coal tar until it became banned. Most jobs concern filling holes in the sides or bottom, where the steel is full of rust craters. The thickness varies from 4 mm to 0.5 mm all over. On the worst parts I use 40 amps of current, 2 mm basic electrode, running quickly, and sometimes I still blast through. 5 by 5 mm holes become 5 by 5 cm holes because it's so rotten. If I make a patch plate, I often end up filling centimetres to the side of the plate with weld bead stacked upon weld bead because there's simply no "meat" to weld onto. The welds and slag fizzle like soda because of the rust and coal tar. Tedious jobs for sure, and not something you learn in school. But all that matters is that the holes are filled and the boat floats again.

Judging by the flux, are those 6010s? Have you considered 6013 or 6014 for thinner rusted out metal? They seem less likely to blow through than 6010
@ypaulbrown3 жыл бұрын
good question, with 6010 and 6011 you can whip and pause to allow cooling and no burn through, where 6013 and 7014 you have major issues with slag entrapment and voids when using that technique.....you can also run both of the cellulose rods [6011/6010] on electrode Negative for less penetration and. more build up......yes, 6010 says electrode positive, but if you look at specs on Lincoln they state positive is the recommended mode, [more penetration] but it can also be used on negative......I am not sure about other manufactures ......but I know I have run a lot of 6010 on negative with no failure.....hope this helps, Paul...p.s. I am pretty sure he is running Lincoln 5P by the red color of the flux.....it is a real digging rod for sure.....
