It actually keeps the extra utility as a recovery move in melee not only is it falcon's only way to turn around in the air but it keeps the ability to give you a little bit extra height perfect for recovering from moves that knock you off stage with your back turned so you can't falcon kick. It's also his strongest rest punish even stronger than a fully charged fsmash if you land the aerial version.

This may be a weird take but for me; The fact that the Falcon Punch is such a bad move actually helps it to a degree because it makes those moments when it does get pulled off all the more hype filled. If it was buffed and made to be really good for competitive, I feel the charm of the move would be lost.

I feel like the people who think Falcon is lame never REALLY understand why he’s hype, It’s not entirely because his combos are good but because Falcon has never and will never be THE BEST, but he will always have so much potential to succeed. Falcon is so Hype because he’s always a step below the best characters, so it’s so much easier to root for him and so much more satisfying to see him land his combos to knee or better yet, combos to falcon punch reads.

I love the animation of it, the small quirks, Captain Falcon looking away from the falcon explosion it creates, and shielding his face from it when you turn it around. I think it being competitively unviable makes it an even greater move, because when you hit that perfect read, and the game slows down, zooms in on it, that's true hype right there

I really agree with your scoring in this video, but I can’t ignore how lame of a choice this was by the patrons. I like the move, don’t get me wrong. It’s flashy and cool and all that, but come on. It’s based on nothing. It’s not viable or useful, which predictably destroyed its scores in three of the five categories, and while it is badass, it’s still just a punch. A fiery, amazing, stylish punch, but a punch nonetheless. Compared to Kirby’s inhale or Steve’s entire gimmick, it’s not particularly interesting, and considering we could’ve had Yoshi’s eggs, a move with significant inspiration from actual games and wildly more utility, I’m a little miffed we got this one first. I’m not upset with MockRock himself, obviously, and I think this move had to be on the tier list somewhere, so this was inevitable. Still, I wish it wasn’t this early. There are so many signature moves to go through that I would’ve rather seen sooner. Hell, even among big punches, I would’ve preferred to see Little Mac’s KO Punch. Still, great video. Just a bit too predictable for my taste.

I’d love to see Warlock Punch added to the tier list since it has a lot of the same things that make Falcon Punch so loved, and although it’s even slower, it is even stronger and has super armor on the ground, which gives it a bit more use and utility, especially against mashy opponents or committal moves such as Jigglypuff’s Rollout and Charizard’s Flare Blitz. It can even cover and armor through some recovery options if read and timed well, such as Chrom’s and Ike’s up b and Ike’s, Wolf’s, and Fox’s side b above ledge

I’m absolutely obsessed with the silhouette art style of the intro. Mind if I ask how you did it?

It began with either chroma keys or rotoscoping along with some additional cleanup to get the initial silhouettes (Dark Pit is using Electroshock Arm on an item, for example, which had to be removed). The "liquid" look is a combination of Premiere Pro's brush stroke and roughen edges effects, and the silhouettes were then tinted yellow and posterized to 30FPS. Hope this helps!

I have my own ideas on how to improve the falcon punch. When Captain Falcon is in the air, he slows down a bit and throws out the falcon punch which can be angled. The Falcon Punch becomes the Ultimate spike(2:08) or aerial combo ender. Alternatively, the Falcon Punch can be the ultimate shield and armor breaker. If someone land the falcon punch, the opponent shield gets destroyed. King K. Rool's belly armor would break as well.

Some ideas I'd like to see for signature moves: Yoshi's egg throw Wario's shoulder charge Bowser's fire breath Snake's cardboard box (if that counts as a "move") Hadoken/Shoryuken would be interesting, as concepts that largely came to define the entire fighting game genre

Honestly if it wasn't slow, if it wasn't impractical, it wouldn't be stylish. It requires HARD reads on an opponent to land, it's so easily punished, it's cumbersome to use, but that's WHY it's so stylish. The fire falcon explosion is cool as hell, but the rarity of being able to land the hit, of seeing it wind up and the building tension of whether it will land or not, watching as the victim is drifting into it and seeing that moment just before the train hit, then the tension release of them EXPLODING off the side? Genuine artistry. I think (other than the areal recovery thing from smash64) that making the move easier to use via speed or even adding b-reversals would diminish that effect. It would make it more common, easier to land, less impactful. It being so bad is why landing it for the win is so good.

The Falcon Punch isn't practical, useful or good in general but there's a reason why it's so beloved. It's a big, flashy, cool looking, fiery move that when landed pumps you full of energy. I screamed a few times from some Falcon Punches in this video. It's carried by it's style factor but I think it's that same style factor that makes the move, his kit as a whole and the captain himself such a memorable character in Super Smash Bros.

Actually, in ultimate, falcon has a 1 frame window to b reverse falcon punch. It's pretty neat since when he reverses falcon punch it shifts his aerial momentum. So if you were to do a jump from fron ledge, b reverse falcon punch, reverse falcon punch you would reach about center stage

Damn I think you don’t give the utility enough credit. Its such a good punish move. Imagine being able to start charging a smash attack in the air and then land with it to punish a bad air dodge or recovery, thats Falcon punch. It can be pretty unavoidable in those situations. Yes in a 1 on 1 when both characters are in neutral is impossible to land. I would give it a 1.5 at least.

Quick note: As far as I remember, falcon punch in melee can grant you a bit of upwards momentum if you keep the stick up while doing it. This is useful when using it to edge guard opponent, but still want to make it back to ledge. It's not as big of a boost as in 64, it's more like puff side b angled up, it helps. As far as I know, this was removed from sm4sh onward, and I don't know for brawl. Also, you could B reverse falcon punch in melee too, but wavebounce did not exist back then, so it's only ever useful to change falcon punch direction mid air (as if RAR'd) without turning around first (if you don't do it frame perfectly, I think it removes your momentum), since RAR doesn't exist in melee either.

I love your work but surely including an S and F tier on a “case by case basis” is redundant. If you’re analysing a single move with respect to five categories, then surely any ranking is a case by case basis. Giving something an A in synergy and a C in style are both case by case, just as much as F or S in design. Again I’m a big fan but it just sounds like a five tier system to me

Ganondorf's warlock punch may be better even though it's slower because the super armor can punish certain moves and it's stronger making it one of the best sheild break punishes. Ganondorf has other iconic moves though having the strangest up tilt in the game and being a 2nd flex move. His new forward smash, the doriyah, has also risen as an iconic move.

The Falcon Punch is a reminder that at the end of the day, Smash and in general any fighting game is built to be fun to play just like any other video game and not the serious competitive experience that a lot of people want the devs to turn it into, which is important to remember.
