Here's a fun fact: Jesters used to be so close to the king, they'd often be the ones to tell them bad news! There was also a jester who was sentenced to death, but the king let him choose how he died. He chose old age, and the king thought it was so funny, he actually gave the jester a house near the outskirts of town, where the jester would live the rest of his life.

All the subreddits down would have caused a significant dip in ad revenue and user traffic. rather pay some admins to play mods and do a terrible job, than keep the subreddits down and lose tons of potential income. Plus they did already ban the entire mod list from r/funny or something for a week when they tried to turn that subreddit to NSFW, so it is definitely hurting their profits, especially the big ones going down Just wish the protest didnt have an end date, and that the reddit ceo wasnt a greedy dick

the real problem about the Reddit API stuff is that communities that heavily rely on external tools (like for instance the blind community) are basically done for. As base reddit does not have these extra tools. Same with a lot of moderator tools. Also, the reasons a lot of subs went NSFW is because those are harder to advertise, and theoretically any content can be marked that way, and still post the normal content, so it is mostly an algorithm thing to be able to keep a sub open and still cancel a big part of ad revenue.

I’m 50, born in 1973. My parents had 8 kids. I’m the youngest. Can confirm. Mom didn’t work, dad was a union industrial mechanic. He made decent money, but we weren’t well off or anything. Maybe upper-lower class. They had no problem feeding all of us, and keeping us warm in our huge house that they paid an $85 a month mortgage on. Dad died suddenly when I was 9 and he was only 40. Life seriously sucked after that. We went from not having a care in the world to extreme poverty. Of course my parents weren’t prepared for one of them to die so young, so there was barely any insurance. The moral of the story, if you have even one kid insure the crap out of yourself!!!

I had a really great life. Then my longtime boyfriend died very suddenly. I lost 85% of my income. The paperwork for me to receive his pension, as a domestic partner, was half filled out, sitting on the coffee table. We thought we had plenty of time for him to make sure I got his house, as his son didn’t want it. The Mercedes he gave me, we kept it in his name because of his special insurance. The list goes on and on of things we should have taken care of. I got nothing. His son even kept my bicycle, because “his dad bought it.” Well, he did. For my birthday. I’m lucky he gave me 24 hours (after I found the live of my life dead) to get my clothes and personal hygiene items. Being prepared for anything is so important. I know his dad would be so angry about this. Oh, the house he didn’t want? He gutted and remodeled it, and now lives there with his family. He didn’t want the house because his mother died there. Well, both of his parents died there and it doesn’t bother him now. We should have done a lot of things.

He would watch Craigslist for high end Mercedes, his favorite car since he was a child, with blown engines and buy them cheap. He would rebuild the engines himself. He did this several times. He usually ended up selling them to our friends at cost. But, his two favorites he kept for us. I refused the newer one, since it was his dream car, and I finally accepted the older one. I actually think I know what you are talking about with the Jesters being likely to be executed, and it’s a bit different that what you are thinking. One thing about the role of a Jester not mentioned is that they were sworn to honesty; they could be executed if they ever were caught telling a lie. They could exaggerate to make a story more funny, but it still had to be accurate. This also meant that, should a kingdom be at war and other kingdom seizing the castle, or there was a threat of the Jester being kidnapped, they would often be either [executed so that they could not tell the king’s secrets, or [have their tongue cut out so that they couldn’t tell the king’s secrets. The latter actually results in a Harlequin!

It's the clubs/extracurricular activities. You can put down whatever you did in that club as experience. I developed attention and memory issues early in adulthood, and it has made me really think about the "don't remind the teacher about homework" thing If the teacher usually assigns homework, and someone in a similar place as me didn't hear the teacher assign homework one day, they have no good way to know whether they didn't notice, or they forgot, or if the teacher actually didn't assign anything. Trying to interrogate a nearby student is probably going to be noticed by the teacher, and some teachers are quite mean. Interrogating the nearby student also means missing anything the teacher might say while that happens. You have 5 minutes to do a 10-minute walk across the school, so you can't ask after class. So really all you can do is ask in class -- which will make the teacher notice if they didn't actually assign homework they meant to assign. The people bitching about a student asking that question are ultimately asking the student to risk their grades for the convenience of the rest of the class.

To Robin’s “Jester Execution” assumption, you’re not far off. Sometimes the King or a member of the royal family would commit a crime, and not wanting to receive justice themselves they would instead use the Jester as the scapegoat (if they didn’t already have someone hired specifically for that purpose). That includes being executed in place of the king. And the king would even be like “Yeah I did it, but it’s all okay because someone else is being paid to take my punishment for me!”

Yeah, 80s/90s kid here. When I graduated in 1999, things were going up, majorly. Just a year of college would have set me back at least $20K. I'm a custodian, so that tells you which route I went. Yeah, cheap ass rent, bills, groceries, and everything were great, but my Dad did only make a $1,000 a month or so (and he was in the Navy). We never had it easy, so it made me appreciate things even more. My parents didn't get that house or anything after he got out. It sucks, but those were the cards they and later we were dealt. Internet, TV, vacations, etc. are nice, but I don't need them to be happy. @11:13: I took an ambulance to the ER a couple years ago for a WICKED migraine (happened after a concussion) and they goofed and sent me a bill instead of billing it to insurance (it got worked out), a 6 mile ride, just transport, was $5,100. Of course, where I live, the EMTs only make about $25K a year. So they aren't getting a piece of that pie. Lucky for me (or unlucky, depending on how you view it), I have Medicaid (because of Autism), so my insurance covered the trip and the ER visit. But it kills me that they can cover my stuff, but we can't do that for others.

14:08. This has actually happened to me before and I still remember it. I have a pretty different music taste than the place I work. I usually wear earbuds and listen to my own music while working at the restaurant that I work at. One time like over half a year ago, I decided to play something that was fairly similar to what the rest of the place plays (Tbf it was noticeably different) and one of my coworkers walked in (they didn’t know I had played it and still doesn’t, haven’t told anyone this story before) and basically said, “what is this? Let’s change this to something else.” It was a little scarring although it only just reinforced the idea of “keep your music to yourself, no one else here likes it”. Maybe I’ll tell it one time at a staff party or something

I'm Australian myself and don't think 30c is hot at all. It's only mildly warm weather. I don't count anything hot until it's at least close to 40c. I mean last summer my bedroom got to 38c one day and most nights didn't drop below 30c (room is built in a way that traps heat and all my electronics/pc are in here so it's always warm/hot in here especially in summer). EDIT: I will admit though that I do find 15c to be a bit cold though 😂. I'm just much more used to hotter weather.

What's truly sad is golf courses where I lived in Southern AZ are built IN A DESERT. They tell people living there to conserve water and to have desert friendly yards, only flush your toilets when its brown only, and skip showers, but use millions of gallons of water to keep the grass alive on courses few people use🤷‍♀️. One course was built just for the rich country club members and to get the PGA to come. PGA did about 2 years and bounced. Waste of valuable resources.

Jesus Christ how far south are you talking, like close to the border or something? I've never had to deal with anything that bad, and I'm in the southern half of the state. I've had to conserve some water more recently, but it has *never* been to the point of being unable to flush a damn toilet. Edit: I realized I should also mention I currently live next a golf course, albeit much smaller scale. It's less of a "rich asshole country club" style course and is much more public (I don't think you actually need an actual membership, but idfk I've never actually step foot on it, only drove past)

I can't remember too much as far as exact pricing for stuff in the 80's, but one thing that stood out was Publix bread was 3 loaves for $1. and it actually stayed that for quite some time, well into the 90's at least.
