From my Algerian side, my great-grandfather. on my mother's side had been cruelly murdered by the French army during a search carried out in the maquis and his head was decapitated and then exposed in a public market to scare the population, and the irony he was a veteran of World War II against the Germans. My grandmother on the paternal side who still lives today also witnessed a spectacular decapitation of her cousin, an FLN fighter with the complicity of a Harki, she cannot forget this day because she repeats it to each time with tears in her eyes, she is currently 95 years old. however, she also told me that at one point the French forced the mountain villagers to leave their villages for a small town in the surrounding plains and during the walk she slipped and fell on rough terrain , one of the French soldiers to help her up and even offered her food to regain her strength, and I find that she was sensitive for this rare gesture coming from a French soldier. There are many other stories...that came to mind and I couldn't remember all the stories.

I Gave Bastien a lift yesterday while he hitch hiked in Scotland. Lovely man. Only at the end did he say who he was and mentioned this film. Having watched it now it is very powerful and the music so haunting. I found out too late how traumatised my own grandfather was from WW2. Never forget.

I much value how the author of this video avoided simplifications and superficiality. It is indeed a deep and honest probe into the long-term consequences of wars. The take-home message from this film is valid and applicable to all the armed conflicts: If you commit acts of brutality in a war, they will haunt you for the rest of your life. Your relatives will eventually learn about it and carry your guilt forward. They will have hard time to reconcile your image with your acts of brutality. No matter what made you commit those shameful deeds. It is often a misguided patriotism, warmangers' propaganda and camaradery with fellow servicemen that can make you hate your enemy and think that these acts are justified, but this will not last forever, and your atrocities will eventually come and bite you. The blood cannot be really washed off your hands.

It's better that this short exists than it not existing, though its finale still leave a bad taste in the throat. It's redemption for the evil doers without regard for those who suffered that evil. There's no message here. None. Other than the film-maker's diary about his feeling. A deeply narcissistic film, even without the details of his lack of initiative being featured. What good are those tears? Nothing. Nothing at all. Those of a crocodile's are more heart wrenching. But more egregious still is the fact that the filmmaker seems to be so concerned with the navel gazing that this simple truism seems to escape him.
