Microsoft phone was a work of art. it was epic with epic animations, first to implement always on display, dark theme, amoled display, 40 megapixel camera literally 10-13 years back, with their swipe keyboard and killer animations, great apps , smooth apps, it failed due to poor marketing, trust me on that, also the fact that not everyone needed microsoft office on their phone ig. they all cared about whatsapp, instagram, snapchat and other apps that are can help them pass their time, also the fact that microsoft tried lockign ppl into their own ecosystem by making devs download visual studio and then their own frameworks that were giga bytes in size. and too many steps for actually building an app but in an organized way. this is what killed it.

I would disagree that socketed power loss is why builders have gone soldered. I won't disagree it may be a very minor consideration for max efficiency models, but I believe that cost, space, and assembly time is much more the reason for soldering RAM; cost being the most important. In some cases, performance since memory can be directly wired with short traces for higher speeds and less error. So power is relatively insignificant loss of battery life. Even if 64% more efficient, 64% of what % of actual power usage of socketed RAM? 64% of .08%? I don't have that answer either :)
@maikschindler1976 ай бұрын
I would say the biggest reason why most laptops dont use soimms is just memory speed. DDR5 sodimms only really go to 5600 mt/s while lpddr5x goes to 7500 and beyond. In addition its less space and easier to make traces for the manufacturer. If you look at sodimm traces they dont go in stright lines but go up and down because all the traces need to be the exact same length for the ra to work. LPCAMM2 solves most of these problems. It takes a lot less space. It is smaller in height and width while also supporting the faster more energy efficinet lpddr5/lpddr5x. Its also easier to lay traces to it than it is to sodimms.

I think that memory is just CAMM in a smaller form factor i.e. only the "mandatory" area of the "socket"/pins

I'm all for upgradable RAM. In fact I'd never consider a laptop with soldered on RAM. From what I've seen however, I fear with LPCAMM the connector(s) on the motherboard are much more fragile than with SO-DIMM. Might lead to many people ruining their laptops by incorrectly upgrading the RAM.

It's really weird seeing Apple "coasting" like that. It literally hasn't done anything with a serious impact since the ipad. Lots of little things to fill out their portfolio (like the watch, siri, tv, ...) and some technically interesting things like moving to ARM, but nothing interesting. I mean, they were never known for inventing categories, but they would take something that was promising but wasn't making much progress and make it a good experience for most people. I haven't seen that in a long time now, and I wonder how long that momentum will last.

I want new electronics but besides being nicer, they don't really add any functionality I don't already have. Id rathet havve the money to buy it if I need, than buy it and have it depreciate on my book shelf or bag.

I kinda wish the new ROG Ally would have the new RAM standard. I hate the soldered RAM and if you want to upgrade, you basically are also required to rewrite the BIOS.

You are asking why the ban not reaching the data centres that means they have in their chips( I mean the two giant CPU manufacturers ) some sniffing and looking arround internal mechanisms to do some mining inside their rivals data.

UFD tech says the M4 benchmark looks fast because NPU inflate the score a ton while actual performance doesn't change much from previous gen. Anyone smarter than me can confirm? (I also suspect that's why Snapdragon Elite X has such high benchmark compared to current NPU-less chip as well?)

The 25% improvement is due to additon of matrix ai processing which is 200% over M3. Take this out and M4 is only 3% better than M3. Don't be fooled by artificial benchmarks.

What do you think: Will we ever be able to replace laptops by Ipads if they have such crazy good chips? Or is the OS not very compatible
@SPFboy866 ай бұрын
Depends on Apple's intentions. If they enable MacOS on iPads that would not only put pressure on MacBooks, but the whole Android tablet market can be vanished. I hope Apple makes the M chips a good sense on iPads.
@MoreBollocks-ui2zs6 ай бұрын
@@SPFboy86 I don't think what is left of the android tablet market would be threatened by an iPad with MacOS but I agree that a laptop replacement iPad is more likely to cannibalize Mac sales than it is to increase their overall market share or impact windows laptops. Until that changes or Apple decides to sacrifice Macs i wouldn't expect a fully capable iPad to exist.

Regarding the Huawei thing - I bet the reason is because the ban is all just security and political theatre, and there was so much money changing hands behind closed doors that they never intended to stop it, but rather, make it look like they are being banned for appearances only.

Ads running while I pause videos? I often pause videos to read graphs or to quote the presenter of the video. For me KZbin videos are not just entertainment. They present information. If ads impede my acquisition of information from videos, I am going to be thwarted in my efforts to be informed. Is it Google's plan to force me to pay for information? I get it. Newspapers aren't free, but I don't buy newspapers, either.
