In 1996 Greene was a skinny young man who couldn't even make it to the US trials' final. A year later he packed like 15 lbs of muscles and almost came close to break the WR. That's how you know what's going on in this sport. Every year new young sprinters show up who run in the low 9.80s and even high 9.7s now

Well, the fastest man of all time has an even bigger leap than that, went from running 10.05s to running 9.58 in less than a year.

@@muggensan8611 Well Fred really a 2/4 guy that can run the 1 so he’s gifted to run such times. Bolt not only Bolt but i remember Gatlin, Ryan Bailey, Blake, and even Gay running this time while shutting down in rounds. I used bolt because it was more impressive to me

@@Kenaz2226 well... ryan bailay pb is 9.88 , but yes gay blake gatlin or powell ran under 9.8 ( sometimes) but 9.86 would still have been a good race for them , and i think it's still a world class chrono , it's not like the perf of the guys of the 90's would worth nothing today you know , at least not on the 100m , that haven't changed that much ( i you put bolt aside)

@costa I agree but I don't think you can discount fast starts as any less of a skill than top speed. Bailey was notoriously bad at starts. It probably cost him this race and from going sub 9.80 but it's a big part of sprinting. Greene didn't have the top speed of Bailey but he was a great starter so I think you have to give credit to him for perfecting that skill.
