Male authors tend to write emotional men as showing love, lust, anger, and resting bitch face, but they write the female characters as portraying those plus a gambit of possible histrionics and hysteria... If you look for it, you see it, and you realize few male authors write realistic characters, and most write fantasy male (of their ideal self) and fantasy females (with stereotypes for lawlz "realism"). There are a few male and female authors who have very human characters. The readers aren't noticing and that reveals a lot about the audience too.

I recently heard that Ripley from the Alien quad was originally intended to be a man. Would've been just another forgettable horror flick if it had.
