I owned 2 vintage rolls Royce's together for over 20 years. My best advice is not to buy one unless you love to work on cars. Or you love to spend money maintaining and having them repaired by someone else. live in a city of 60,000 people and no one wanted to touch them, for even basic repairs. When I bought tires at Costco, I had to warn them that the lug nuts go opposite most cars. One problem is that the mechanics reference books are very expensive. Another problem is that they are built from the ground up, so you have to remove many parts to fix small things. I would flat bed my Rolls 100 miles each way to a reputable repair shop. That being said, they are fun to drive and see everyone's reactions. My 1978 two-tone blue Silver Shadow II was literally a work of art. After more than 20 years of enjoyment, I sold her to a TV production company which filmed a documentary about it.

There's a shop in our city that services and repairs them. I was talking with the owner and he reinforced what most of us know already: They are mechanical and electrical nightmares, rust/corrosion-prone, etc. When he's asked to do a PPI, the potential buyers are always shocked by the long list of issues and costs to repair. My neighbor had one and tried to keep it on the road but eventually just gave up.

.Incorrect. The left hand side wheels have left hand thread nuts. The right hand wheels have right hand thread nuts, There was some theory that these nuts were less likely come loose with this arrangement.

Same story for me I owned SRB15286 along withSRB16884 I also flatten them 100 miles away from Birmingham to Atlanta for repairs,I too worked on them I would flat 1 to Atlanta and have a friend drive my diesel mercedes to Atlant to pick up cars when repaired.i later decided a new owner needed to feed the pair of shadows I'd invested over 140 grand into the money to keep them up. I retained my silver spirit for the shadows I received a brand new 1976 caprice with 1689 miles on it sticker still on the right rear window, I said the chevrolet will keep its value and ez to maintain.

Best advice.......do not buy one unless you just love writing checks! I have always wanted one and came close once, but fortunately passed on the opportunity. A few years ago we were visiting a car museum / B&B in the East. Gentleman had about 60 British sports cars and one RR. The RR sat in the front entrance to the property as a lawn ornament. Had sat there for years.....big dollar problems with the hydraulics.

on the Rolls-Royce when you go to hit the automatic seat switches in the middle console and you notice it's not working and the washer fluid light on the left side lights up well it's a relaya lift up the passenger cushion and you'll find your relays they're all so below the glove compartment there are other relays and wanted most important is a fuel pump relay it's a 4-prong to face if you driving the car down the road and it quits running 9 out of 10 hits at relay it would be the second one in

Shadows, if original and well-maintained, are delightful and very useable cars. The earlier cars, at least in righthand drive form, had a RR-built 4-speed Hydramatic gearbox - not a Borg-Warner unit as stated in this video.

Even on cars as well built as the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, rust will always be an issue with cars over forty years old. A full service history is vital, as the cost of spare parts can be considerable. Like any prestige car manufacturer, their very expensive to maintain and run.

I was thinking of buying one that isn't quite that old, maybe something like 85-99, I'm going to be working a job that requires lots of traveling and plan on using this car when I come home on vacation for roadtrips and such, probably 1000-5000 miles per year at the most. I have looked them over and they seem like they are easy to work on so repairs shouldn't be more than a regular car, what really has me worried is finding parts, things like gaskets for the door seals and replacement headlights and things of that nature. I imagine that these cars are very difficult to find high quality parts for and when you do they will cost a fortune. I imagine that if I plan to spend about 1500-2000 a year on upkeep it shouldn't be too bad but I always wonder if there's something I am missing.

Good luck! You'll need it. Find your mechanic FIRST. Get a complete PPI from him before you spend any money for it. Sit down when he hands you the results.

If you want a RR Silver Shadow budget £15k - £10k for a good one with FSH and £5k for one that is suspect so sits in the garage for spares. Both used that way will be depreciation proof and about as cost effective as an RR can get.

in 1979 the silver Shadow II had the most beautifulest colors and my favorite color was the pewter Green top with the Brewster green sides which I had known a friend that had owned one and I also did a lot of work for him by the problem with those cars on the 79 is the braking system the braking system man I'll tell you is such a nightmare but what you can do is do a brake conversion on them cars and get that taken care of the engine is a 4-12 V8 engine that holds 12 quarts of oil another problem with the 1979 was also the air-conditioning and the refuel door of you open up the bonnet on the passenger side there's a little black box with two fuses and how you happy and that when the AC is not working is pulled a fuse would be blond pull that fuse out and put in a thermal limiter the electrical system is Lucas Lucas has a biggest nightmare for electrical but a thermal limiter in that one would be the right fuse the left side was a refuel door which was not really necessary to put a thermal limiter inside that one but also you can just put in a little bit heavier fuse and keep in mind that car is all relay with relay the instrument panel all the gauges are vdo those are hair-like aircraft instruments that they put in their car since day one

Neighbor had a Shadow. Lovely car. But I read things about them all of the time, and not much is really good. I had two old 68 ford station wagons. Straight 6. Never a problem but have to change a starter on one myself. Great car. Don't understand why RR and Bentley always have issues and so expensive. Don't confuse nice leather seats and wood dash with a good reliable car. That's what many do. An RR dealer in Los Angeles also told me the cars are greatly overpriced because they can over charge you. And the rich are willing to pay it.

It shouldn't be much more than any other car, its just a regular old v8 like anything else. The difference that is hard to spot is whether an incompetent shop is charging you more "because its a rolls" or a very competent shop is charging you for their competence. Just find a "european" car shop. Anything with a bunch of land rovers and mercedes sitting around back should do.
