Will is the mongoose hidden beneath the house that hunts and kills the snakes that slither by it. A decent interpretation would be that Will is (unknowingly) the Mongoose that waits in the hidden dark, ready to pounce on any snakes slithering around nearby, hunting/catching/killing the "evil people" that are the Snakes. Hannibal can see early on what Will could become or what he truly is.

Hope you're buckled in tight for this wild ride, FT! But I KNEW you'd enjoy this! The complexity, drama, verbal sparring and mind games (as well as the eerily memorable aesthetic) make Hannibal a much loved show by those of us who appreciate its darkly layered themes - and still hope for its return one day!! I think it's unique in a lot of ways, and both Hugh (Will) and Mads (Hannibal) have great chemistry on screen and have been great friends for a number of years, and they will have you captivated from beginning to end! As someone who hates spoilers myself, I don't want to clarify anything for you yet, just in case - I'd rather see you do what you do best (observe, listen and analyse the finer details!) and wait to see if certain things slot into place for you in the next episode! But you are correct - it's one hell of an intro to this meeting of minds (including Jack)! Great reaction, as always!

right before they find the other girl, hannibal says "maybe i can help good Will see his face" and that's exactly what he did. he basically just made a very disturbing spot the difference game for will to help him better understand the actual serial killer. and as for the mongoose thing, i think it's specifically a reference to rikki tiki tavi by rudyard kipling, which is about a mongoose that protects a family from cobras. so imo, he's saying he wants will on his side to protect him from the fbi, but will doesn't know that currently. also im sure someone's mentioned this already, but bryan fuller, the showrunner, was heavily inspired by iwtv, so if will and hannibal's dynamic feels familiar, thats why 😂

I was also a bit confused after watching the first episode, but just keep watching! It is a complicated show, but I like that it makes you also question things at the same time as Will trying to figure what tf is going on. It's also visually such a beautiful show, which is weird to say because of the subject, but it fits so well with Hannibal being this charismatic yet dangerous character.

After the beginning of my first watch (seen the series 5 times) I was concerned that a lot of the intellectual writing was gonna go over my head cuz i’m a lil slow ngl. BUT as I continued watching I love the way the writing brings you along in the storytelling in a way that you could understand the parallels, thought process of characters, and intricacies of each case as well as the main overarching “case.” And then after I watched it again and again I caught more things that I missed on the first watch and it’s just a masterpiece. 23:18 it sounds like the title of a kids' book but it's an absolute power play--The Snake with the Pet Mongoose. But I think Hannibal wants a pet/friend. Someone who understands him. Even if that someone is a mongoose. I watched the premiere live when it aired on NBC. Could not believe NBC could get away with some of the things you are due to see(if you haven't already by the time you read this). The writing, pacing, dialogue was poetry and Hannibal wears the crispiest suits known to both man and god. The actor playing Will Graham, his father is a famous/celebrated philosopher and moralist so this role with all the moralizing that goes into his job...*chef's kiss* Was already a huge fan of Mads Mikkelsen and Special Agent Morpheus soooo... I think anyone who's seen The Matrix has made a small suburb worth of red pill/blue pill jokes when he recruits Will😂😂😂I know I did Hannibal's one of a kind and one of my all time fave shows. Extra next level grateful to find this waiting in my feed, dude. 🙏🏾 30:37 uhmm...without spoiling it, as best I can anyway, there's a meme of a quote from Alfred the butler in The Dark Night, about watching the world burn? I believe, anyways. Sometimes you need a inverted version of the thing you're looking at to see the proper clues or puzzle pieces. So as simple as I can yes, this episode feature TWO cannibals. There's the concept that psychopaths are addicted to causing chaos just for the hit of dopamine it brings; again, the power play and the manipulation. What happens if I push this button as a whole entire serial killer. The rest, well...keep watching😉

I think all your questions should be answered in some form or another in the show. It's been a minute since I rewatched this show, maybe a year or two. This show does a good job of letting you draw your own conclusions and figure things out as the characters do, so I don't think they ever come out and say anything outright but the puzzle kinda comes together as the show goes on. So wanted to mention that when Hannibal says I can help will see our cannibals face- the murder in the field was him literally doing that- he didn’t know who garret jacob Hobbs was at that point he was trying to poke at will and see what he was capable of and going to his house was confirming that. You were close on your assessment though! Closer than a lot to be fair- there are no throw away lines or scenes really in this series so keep your eyes and your ear open as much as you can and enjoy the ride!!

The line about the mongoose shows that Hannibal understands Will's true nature better than Jack, even better than Will himself (as Will has never confronted or thought about it). So while Jack sees him as "fine china" ; Hannibal sees him as stronger, a man who is literally capable of killing the snakes (aka serial killers, including, possibly Hannibal). Hannibal is as perceptive as Will and within one encounter, he knows Will is a threat to him. Really fantastic exchange.

I was so happy to see you uploaded this! I’m loving the Iwtv reactions and can’t wait to see you start Hill House too. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to explain, though I’m assuming your patrons have already told you, but Hobbs was always the serial killer in Minnesota (the Shrike) that they were looking for. Hannibal only killed the girl in the field. As he told Jack, he wanted to “help good Will see his face”. Will needed such a different kill as he said, ‘see the negative to see the positive so he could figure out Hobbs’ profile better. I loved how enthusiastic you were about this episode! It is one hell of a pilot and throws you straight into the deep end. Don’t stop with the Matrix jokes! Haha
