I was 16 when this one hit the theater. I was also (still is) a big Stephen King fan. I had not read the book back then, so I went in with no knowledge. People were crying and screaming and laughing, and when the movie was done, everyone just sat there until the credits were done. People were hugging strangers and comforting eachother on the way out. A true masterpiece on so many levels

Beautiful movie. It's so easy to love some of the characters. Besides John and Paul, I really love Brutal. He's a big guy and usually quiet and patient, so it feels so deserved every time he lays hands on Percy. He's such a good friend to Paul too, immediately on board with whatever he has in mind for helping Melinda and following him when he leaves the Mile. That and his occasional joke adds a subtle bit of humor. "I always carry a spare mouse in my pocket" lol.

I think that YOU are the first person/reactor to specifically state how good the actor who played Percy was. Everyone says that they hatedb him or his character. But thery don't mention how good the actor was. It takes someone REALLY GOOD at their job to make EVERY single person hate them. Great Post. And thank you for stating something that needs to be sated. Evenj if we hate the character, the actor needs credit. 👍 2 Thumbs Up 👍

The theory that John Coffey is Jesus was confirmed by Stephen King. Same initials, he heals and has other powers, lights follow him like a halo, people see him and say Jesus, “theys angels just like the ones up in heaven”. And the flies can be explained as the devil’s work because satan is often referred to as lord of the flies.

The "flies" in this movie represent all the evils and illnesses in the world. Aside from being a seer, and an empath, John is a healer. He takes the insults from the body (i.e. cancer, infection, even death) and releases it back into the ether, where it dissipates into nothingness.

1. YOU WILL CRY😭😭😭😭 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie". 3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935 South.) 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD) and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part. 7. Movie magic Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy. EVERYONE hates him.🤬 10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge. 11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clarke Duncan.😇 They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography/angles to make John look taller. 12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off. 13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for. 14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced. the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. (GOAT)🤩 15. Four words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

I find theories taken from cultural osmosis pretty interesting if you want to share it, as you mentioned in the ending. No judgment for theories crafted before you see it all. There's a lot to this movie. The idea of "What would we do if Jesus appeared to us today?" defintiely applies. It's interesting the paralells set up by king: we hear the story from the point of view of Paul, a future apostle of Jesus who was afflicted and healed by Jesus. Meanwhile, Paul here is afflicted with an infection taken from him by John Coffey. He subsequently becomes a believer in his power and goes onto tell the story, much as Paul the apostle takes it as his job to share the message of Christ to the gentiles.

Jordan Peterson explains this theme very well and why these types of stories resonate the most with us. It's the ultimate tragedy like in the crucifixion of Christ - the most worst possible punishment to the person who least deserves it. And not only do they not deserve it for their innocence but they are also as good as it gets as a person.

I definitely see John as either Jesus christ himself or an angel. His initials are J.C., after all, and he dies for others' sins. Also, it's like he was born yesterday. So child like and innocent. He's a conduit. He can sense and channel everything around him, good and evil. I believe the "flies" that come out of his mouth are simply "badness." He absorbs it and purges it. I also find John's attire interesting, I know it's of the period, but it also reminds me of babies or toddlers in those little dungarees. This is one of those movies I can watch many times and have different thoughts or feelings from the themes. Such a classic EDIT: i find it interesting that they dont tell us the crimes of some of the prisoners. How would we the audience feel about the characters if we did know ?
