In the middle of this last xc season (im a senior in high school), i got IT band syndrome and pulled my hamstring. Because of these injuries, I missed a lot of races and underperformed at districts, state, and regionals. For the past few months ive been going through patterns of frustration and anger thinking about the opportunities missed and dreams crushed due to something as random and unfair as injuries. On top of that, i cant do what i love anymore without being in pain. I tried to force recovery at the start of this month and ended up reinjuring myself. Since then ive been feeling stuck and helpless. I cant believe the timing of this video, but i think the ideas you brought up in this video can help me make a positive change. Ive been consumed by my negative thoughts the last few months because of my focus on factors out of my control instead of focusing on what i can and should do. I think the best version of myself knows how to be patient and take the proper steps to recovery, and knows that there are more opportunities waiting once i get healthy. PS Ive watched your and sage's videos since 6th grade. You guys helped me develope the passion i have for running and i look up to you guys a lot. Thank you

Payson, thank you so much for sharing this as I know there are so many people who can relate. Having to take a break (especially a long break) from doing what we love can be so hard. Your realization that you can grow as a person and athlete at this time shows that you already do have a strong mind. If you work on it just a bit, you've got some wonderful days ahead of you! I wrote this article a few months ago that might be helpful as well: blog.ultimatedirection.com/sandi-nypavers-4-ways-to-manage-your-mind-during-injury/ Excited for you and all of the good times you'll create in your life!

Love this!!!!! We are so conditioned by our thoughts.... Being aware of our thoughts and the negative patterns helps break that conditioning. Great video coach

This whole channel is undoubtedly one of the best hidden little gems, and not just for running. I genuinely appreciate the knowledge that you share and i really like how direct ur videos are. It seems like u know exactly what's most important because everything ive seen so far was as simple and efficient as i think it could have possibly been. I spend alot of time watching videos and picking out the essential from the nonessential in most videos. With your videos i dont seem to have to do that. People like u are invaluable to the world of people trying to improve ourselves and our lives. Thank u for this awesome channel

Thank you so much for your candid thoughts on going through not-so-good times. It means a lot to hear that even the people who compete at higher levels go through tough times. Take care!

I have trouble with obsessive thoughts. It funny because I was just thinking about this before you posted this. They are primarily annoying, setting tasks and thinking about tasks obsessively. Negative thoughts about myself as well. I really want to get control back of my thoughts. You are the only person I've ever seen that even talks about this. Thanks for sharing, let's get our minds back on track and learn to relax the mind. It's so hard lol

Great topic. When I run I speak to myself by saying things like "you are doing great." or "you have covered this distance before you can do it" By using the word you it's like have a running coach there with you.

There is book called "Running With The Mind of Meditation" by Sakyong Mipham, a tibetan monk. I think it's a good source of mindful running tips. ☯️

first video i've seen from sandi, tho i've been seeing alot of sage's videos last 2 months. I certainly did not expect this great message when I clicked on it. I'm fairly new to running- picked it up 4 years back, with 3 of those years just being a 5k casual bi-weekly runner. Before that tho, I did alot of advanced yoga for years, but the classes or studios I visited the most, ones which I thought were most beneficial to me, were the ones with a substantive personal message similar to this one. I hope other videos are like this.

Great topic! So many folks could benefit from these concepts. Failing is winning for me. Bring on the struggle! When I start beating myself down, I just start thinking about people that have much bigger REAL problems than I. My self doubt starts to look pretty silly.

You ought to make a set of steps on how you would go about tackling the questions. It takes a lot of creativity sometimes to jump on to each step to answer each question and when your in the dungeon the creativity can be hard to find. I will def give some thought for my own life.

Great video! For me sadly the biggest thing is struggling with healthy weight and chronic IT Band issue. I tried everything but it comes down to discipline (proper nutrition and strengthening my weak hips) which I struggle with too. I do not have a problem with self worth, high mileage regimen, getting motivated, but these two things are hindering my progress for years. I got professionals look at my form. In this age OC nobody will tell me IRL lose weight you are fat, but that is exactly what I need to do. That and continually work on my hips and glutes. It would be easier if I could strength train but other injury prevents me to do that. Anyways, enough rambling, thanks for the video!

The first video I saw on this channel, just saw that your channel was recommended in the last video on Vo2maxProductions, happy I followed the link! Just ask yourself: What would the best version of myself do in this situation? I'll keep it in mind! Really good advice!
