One interesting thing to note, although the interior of the engine is very impressive in condition one can not assume they can just drive around forever without maintenance and achieve the same. At some point in this cars life it was receiving careful and regular servicing, it only fell into disrepair in the last 6ish years so so, 4 of which it was left to sit rotting outside in the weather. Also worth noting is that the oil pump chain tensioner is starting to break apart and chunks of cam chain guides were also breaking off - anything like that ends up caught in the chain drive and it's going to end in tears.

It seems to be in excellent condition . There are oil squirters to cool the pistons like in competition cars. The iron alloy block is massive. The M104.990 and M104.980 are the best engines ever produced.

How different are the M103 and M104 engines. we have a 1988 260 E with 251000 miles that runs very well. Have only had to replace the head gasket. Previous owner was fanatic about maintenance

They're actually very similar below the head, which was the main difference when they upgraded to DOHC, 24 valves and a double row timing chain. The M104 still had some head gasket issues but luckily it was just in the form of an external oil leak so it could go on for as long as you could stand cleaning the garage floor haha

Hi great work on the COvId w124 rebuild looks great hehe! Just wondering how you installed that J pipe that goes into the crankcase? I have a brand new pipe and it slips out too easy. No one seems to be able to help me with this.

Bwiantube you are lucky to have a new one they are out of production now, on the 980 anyway. I applied loctite 680 retaining compound to this j pipe then banged it in the correct angle. Make sure hole and pipe are clean and then let it cure. Test its solid after than then safe to install sump.

MMWA greatly appreciated, no info about this one! I bought through MB melb paid $160. The original was sitting at the bottom of the sump. But gonna give Loctite a go. As it get so hot in there was wondering what would actually take those temperatures. Thanks again!

@@Bwiantube idealy shouldnt get much more than 100c if oil cooler is working / fitted. The loctite should only let go with hundreds of degrees

How removing pulley ??
@19jacobob933 жыл бұрын
Was it just the .980 that had the piston oil jets? I don't recall seeing them in a .990... I wonder why they'd remove them if they did
@MMWA-DAVE3 жыл бұрын
From memory the later 3.2 m104’s did have them up till a certain serial number. As far as I’m aware it’s not documented why they were deleted. Late AU version m104’s didn’t even have oil coolers, that was completely deleted too, depending on the car it was installed in.

@@MMWA-DAVE interesting, thanks for the info! I have a 92 W140 with a .990

@@19jacobob93 i like the 990. In my opinion it’s better than the later 3.2’s - less plastic.

because i wanted to rebuild it with 3.2 crank and 2nd oversize pistons. This is what it has now and is way more powerful.
