Great tip on holding up the piston by using a screwdriver thru the piston pin hole to allow the "old school ring compressor" to fully compress the oil ring! I've had the misfortune of being in a hurry and breaking an oil ring due to it not being fully compressed! If one has the money or rebuilds engines for a living, the custom sized tapered ring compressors are the way to go. For the casual engine rebuilder, the method you have illustrated enables the simple old school ring compressor to works on any piston without the risk of oil ring breakage.

Since blow-by gases contain oil vapor... The blow-by gasses from the valve cover on most OM617’s (non California) get plumbed into the air filter (the federal version filter that sits on TOP of the turbo) after passing through the cyclonic oil separator. The gasses go into the intake to get burned, while the remaining separated oil drains back to the pan via that extra port beside the turbo oil return. Jonesin in for another 617 rebuild update over here...

Hello Sr. I am Matias, I come from URUGUAY, I LIKE IT AND IT HAS HELPED ME A LOT. Could you give some advice? I have a mercedes 300sd w126, it runs great. but it happens that it apparently loses oil in the crankshaft seal or seal from the gearbox side. Do you think that you could undertake or make the arrangement without disassembling too much? thanks greetings the car is 1982 om617

To change the rear crank seal you have to remove the engine and disassemble the upper oil pan you cannot fix that in the car.

What size 12 point socket did you use when torquing the rod nuts down? I can’t find a socket snug enough to get them off.
@woodsandbarclay
@woodsandbarclay Жыл бұрын
James this was several years ago sorry I cannot remember. But it is going to be one of your metric sizes. I don't remember if I used a regular socket or a 12-point socket. However if you go to my website you can download the engine manual for the om617 engine and it will tell you the nut size when you look in that section of the manual. That's what I would have to do in order to find out that information.

The om617 manual is actually available for download on my website under the download section. A friend of mine had a PDF copy of it and send it to me a couple of years ago. I just took that PDF to FedEx Kinkos and have them print it into a book. If you need an actual real Mercedes manual eBay is the best place to find them. If you want to download the 617 manual just go check out the download section on my website www.woodsandbarclay.com

I think you forgot to install the timing chain. It's about 19 years since I opened a om617 but if memory serves , you have to install the timing chain in the same time as you install the crank shaft. I might be wrong

Why?
@gregoryarrieta3675
@gregoryarrieta3675 4 жыл бұрын
@@woodsandbarclay Because right now I am doing exactly the same with an old 617 952 turbo diesel .... And it doesn't turn that easily. The mechanics of the old guard in my country (Costa Rica) say that an engine of these should not turn easily, when it has new bearings and a plush seal. Sorry for my bad English, I don't write or speak well
@woodsandbarclay
@woodsandbarclay 4 жыл бұрын
@@gregoryarrieta3675 well that's not true. If you use plenty of assembly lube and everything has the correct tolerances the engine should turn over like it does in this video.
