I was a kid in 1970, I think I was 15.. I was learning to play guitar... Okie from Muskogee was the first Merle Haggard song I ever heard.. I loved the song, even tho I was from a different world.. It was all rock and roll and the hippie thing, the Vietnam war going on, kids had become very dissident, and unruly. The song stuck a cord with me, that world had gone wrong... And Merle was calling us out, and telling us that something was wrong... And Merle was right.. That was why the song was so popular.. By 1978 country had got my attention, by the 80's I was playing Bass in a country and oldies bands... Along the way I think I learned all of Merle's hits. White line fever, silver wings, Mamma tried.... Okie said it all at the time... I never saw Merle in person. He is certainly in a class by himself... Merle Haggard, we will miss you.. Thank you for all the great music, that changed the Country !!! And the world...

I remember this song, and more importantly the era it was popular. There was truly a cultural divide in the country. (Support our troops vs. Get out of Vietnam, Long hair vs. short hair, country music vs. rock, John Wayne vs. Peter Fonda, etc.)

Merle delivered a message or honesty when a lot of my generation and myself were in denial. The basic decency of mainstream America! Viva Merle.

It’s a nice song but the lyrics are divisive, promote culture wars and ego.

The irony lol. He delivered honesty? The song is deliberately sarcastic.
