I love all types of music and would hate to think that I'm forbidden to like a particular song because it doesn't 'fit' into a so-called genre or disagrees with said genre's so-called rhetoric. Who makes these rules anyway 😮

This song is more about celebrating actual accomplishments, instead of just celebrating getting high and not having a job. Songs about the idea of one last town in America that still does things the old way, with old mentalities.

I was a kid in 1970, I think I was 15.. I was learning to play guitar... Okie from Muskogee was the first Merle Haggard song I ever heard.. I loved the song, even tho I was from a different world.. It was all rock and roll and the hippie thing, the Vietnam war going on, kids had become very dissident, and unruly. The song stuck a cord with me, that world had gone wrong... And Merle was calling us out, and telling us that something was wrong... And Merle was right.. That was why the song was so popular.. By 1978 country had got my attention, by the 80's I was playing Bass in a country and oldies bands... Along the way I think I learned all of Merle's hits. White line fever, silver wings, Mamma tried.... Okie said it all at the time... I never saw Merle in person. He is certainly in a class by himself... Merle Haggard, we will miss you.. Thank you for all the great music, that changed the Country !!! And the world...

I couldn’t stop smiling today, watch a video of my uncle who passed this past winter. Feeding his oldest grandchild and turns this song on and happily sings it while feeding because he loved this song and it’s great memories for us as well, being at our cabin(s). Our first home, Living off the land and enjoying each other’s company in the evening with a glass of rum and country tunes.

Merle sure could sing. I’m a 2nd generation Californian. The urban areas & politics out here have always gotten under my skin. Going back home to see family in Oklahoma and Texas has always been a great experience. It’s nice to know there are still some good, wholesome people and places out there. Hoping to make it back one day.
