He was certainly a gifted artist. I guess his personal life was very troubled, it he managed to bring that into his songwriting and performances. Country music today has very few artists who are capable of the same connection.

@Carole Just Carole , lol, "country?" singers these days?, lol Aint many that sing country. Poor ole country radio or so-called country radio play what has, in the past, been referred to as pop top 40. Not saying that 1 of em hear & there are not fairly decent BUT not country. & I'll admit there 1 out of every 20, 30 that do song real country. I haven't listened to the radio in probably 3 years. I love the outlaws, thats the 1s that sing what they've lived. & they wont, for whatever reason play them on main stream radio. I have playlists & a Bluetooth speaker so who needs any radio? Plus no ads or commercials1

You might enjoy knowing that Bob Wills personally gave Merle his fiddle on the stage at the Academy of country music show at the Hollywood Palladium many many years ago. Bob was in a wheelchair at that point and he leaned into Merle’s ear to thank him for the job he did on the tribute album Merle had done on Bob… and said “Ya done it right“. I know this because I was there and recorded it.

The intro and outro of Hag on the fiddle really sets the song up and ends it so Beautifully.....it alone can make my tears flow like a river.....along with the song itself. The first time I heard this song wasn't by Merle. It was a half drunk friend. He didn't mess it up eventhough he was 4-sheets in the wind. His voice was great. He....like Merle....is no longer with us. The song is so good it even impressed me with Brian. Now hearing Merle.....what else could be better? I love the fiddle on the beginning and end of the song. It's what puts the exclamation point on the song.
