Clicking Behind Dashboard - How to Fix Clicking Dash - Honda Chevy Ford Dodge Jeep Mercedes

In this video I will show you what to do if you have a clicking noise behind the dashboard on your Honda/Acura, Ford, Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Chevy, just about any car. Maybe you hear that clicking, tapping noise when you start your engine or change the heater / ac setting. So I will show you what causes it, how to find it, and how to fix it.

Fairly common problem on Subarus. I've found that cycling thru all vent modes on full a/c including using the front defrost button a couple of times cleared mine up. Try that before you replace, you may just have a stuck actuator and if you get lucky this will free it up.

I got my 2010 Jeep Compass Actuator fixed! There are 4 actuators. 2 that are easily accessible and the other 2 that aren’t. In regards to the clicking sound without the car on, my mechanic said that GM vehicles are known to do that. It’s about $175 at the shop. For someone who doesn’t have car repair experience or want to spend time to deal with the issue myself, it’s the opportunity cost you pay. Even if you can get the part cheaper yourself. Just wanted to update everyone from my experience. Hope it helps and thank you for this video!!

I just have to say you are number one. The video your instructions the comic side you make a woman feel good about getting up under the hood and fixing her car herself. Well I have a mad typewriter somewhere in front of me but Not on startup , Not consistent and it is off and on with no difference in rpm's . Environmental controls work well, so I am still hunting for the ticking noise and yes the car was fully inspected with the mechanic taking it out for two test drives without hearing anything? He said when the CEL comes on is a good indication of where we can find the problem , the CEL does not come on. Good narration and laid back humor in this video.

Great video man. Im trying to figure out why the middle dashboard vents on my 2006 Accord don’t blow air. The other vents work just fine but half my ac works. This video showed me what might be causing this. Thank you sir

Glad to help. Yep, If you hear your fan blowing, but some of the vents aren't putting out air, it's probably one of 2 things: (1) Either there is an obstruction or (2) the flap isn't opening and closing correctly due to a bad actuator.

Thank you for this video 😭 I’d sent my Jeep to the mechanics’ monthsss ago because of the weird knocking noise. They didn’t even get a chance to look at it till the day I needed it back, so all the info I got was that it was one of my two actuators. Glad to have some more details on what exactly causes it and how it can be checked/fixed/adjusted and whatnot 💪🩵 P.S. no hate to the mechanics btw, they were crazy busy those few days and had warned me beforehand that they might not get a chance to get a good look at my car 😅

My actuator clicks during and after I turn off my Impala. I think it is draining the battery. The car jumps easy with portable charger. I drive for a while. Turn off the car. Go shopping then come back out and the car won't start. Then the clicking noise happens even then. I am so confused. My voltage on the battery is 12.4 and goes up to 14.3 when running. The alternator checks out fine too. Don't know what it is...frustrating. thank you for getting me closer to a solution!

I have a challenger. When I started my car it ran for a second then quit so took the left side dash apart to try and get to the metal box that controls the starting and got to it but couldn’t remove it for tight space. I spray the starter button with cleaner and if it quits I disconnect the neg on the batter and it resets the car alarm so it works again.

Thanks for the video. We're experiencing a heat wave and the clicking would start then stop about 30 seconds later. Today there was no clicking sound. Do you think the problem solved itself?

Unfortunately, I doubt it. The shaft inside the actuator probably just spun for a while until it oriented itself properly. I'd keep an ear open for it in case it starts clicking again.

2009 chevy cavalier has 3 seperate clicking ones and will do it just sitting in the driveway even an hour after being turned off. It always does it upon starting and will go through all 3 different clicking sounds and eventually stop, any ideas ? Great video btw.

Sounds like the computer is telling one of those actuator gears to keep "seeking". Makes me wonder if it's gonna run down your battery too! Try unplugging them one at a time like I show in the video. It's hard to believe but perhaps they ALL need to be replaced?

I have a 2015 Kia optima that has a sound similar to this but it doesn’t happen all the time, and sometimes it makes the sound when the heat/ac are turned off. Do you think it might be the same thing? I refer to it as a fan trying to go but can’t.

Would the ticking noise continue if the aircon is switched off. I have that ticking sound in the dash and only stops when the car is off. Runs all the time when car is on and even when airconditioner is switched off.

It depends more on the position of the vents. When you switch from Heat to AC ... or for example from defrost to your feet vent ... that's when the actuators do their thing. To divert the air along a new path. It has more to do with that than the particular HVAC mode you are in. Make sense?

ok...loved the video!!!.....but.....my car starts the clicking noise around the dash area with just turning the key to on!! I'm definitely no mechanic but what can do that with nothing turned on? I dont turn the key to start the car I just turn it to on!!!

Actually, that makes sense. As soon as you turn the key to your accessory or on position, the actuator may be "searching" for the right position. I like to look up under the dash and pinpoint where the sound is coming from like I did in the video.

That was the case with the mustang I worked on. Worn contacts in the actuator can cause it to "search" and stutter. But I also wonder if you might have some sort of obstruction. The best way to test for that is to manually open & close the actuator flaps like I illustrated. You have to work through the process of elimination I demonstrated.
